Hardware talk, finally some incline in the Steam thread. Waiting for Devils Canyon before I do my yearly upgrade. It's probably best to wait until the Haswell refresh is out (hoping mid June) as that will likely trigger a price drop on the other Intel CPUs.
I'm just saving my pennies until Black Friday. For a video card and CPU at least. I'm building a whole new rig since my current one is circa 2010. Incremental updates have been serviceable, but it's time for some new tech. I even want need a new case.

I can spend days and days just surfing parts, wonderful times.....I assume you know about http://pcpartpicker.com/, very handy site. I'm probably going to do a complete rebuild as well but it takes me weeks to decide on each part. Debating on a new case right now, thinking about this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811854001 coming from a HAF X. It's time to get something a little less tacky.

If I don't get one sooner, Black Friday will be the time I finally get a non-shit GPU. I'm pretty excited.

Thanks for 99 spritis showed names after entering email.

Was also able to solve Windows 8.1 install problem after 8 months (makes sense right?)

Dark magick was involved such as firmware upgrades on SSD & MB.

MB firmware fixed this. You would think they'd mention this in changes but nope.

Guess which of these fixed Windows 8.1 copmatility.

- Updated Microcode.
- Improved VGA compatibility.
- Improved memory compatibility.

- Add more DMI information.
- Improved audio problem when using IVY-Bridge CPU. (Not this I have Sandy Bridge-E processor I belive)

- Update SATA Legacy ROM & UEFI Driver version to v.12.8.0.1016.
- Update audio table.
- Improved memory compatibility.

:D

What you got lingering for Intel CPU's?

Yeah, I'm the same way. I've been window shopping cases at Micro Center and flipping through some at Newegg. Oddly enough, for me, the case is the hardest part for me to pick. I'm not even sure what case I'm using right now because I can't even remember when I bought it or from where, but it has become inadequate. I just need something that'll hold 2-4 optical drives, 6-8 HDDs, has better than adequate airflow, isn't ten feet tall and doesn't have spinning chrome fans and a disco ball. Oh, and costs less than my future GPU. Video cards and CPU's are pretty cut and dry. The MOBO may require some thought, however.

Yeah, I think all of us "kids" in our 20s grew up on old cartoons. Just because they weren't new when we were kids doesn't mean the cartoon networks didn't play the old stuff all day everyday. Scooby Doo was a favorite of mine, Looney Toons, Tom and Jerry, all of the above. Tex Avery ones were some of my favorite too.

It's funny that the older folks think we didn't grow up on the same stuff. Hell, they're probably STILL playing the old stuff all the time.
Not as much as you might think. They still play some old Scooby-Doo, and occasionally Tom & Jerry, on Cartoon Network, but most of the old stuff these days is either on Boomerang or the Hub.

Other than those three channels, I can't think of any national networks that play cartoons from before the late 80s. Well, occasional seasonal specials like "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," etc., aside.

Newegg has the i7 4770k for $320 right now, plus Total War 2 free with it, and that's what's really important.
While that's a decent deal, rumor has it that the i7 Devils Canyon will be $360. Granted it requires a Z97 mobo, but if $320 is the best you can do for the 4770k, I'd wait and pay a bit more for the 4790k.

How about a Coolermaster HAF 922 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119197? I'm pretty sure the LED can be disabled via a button on the top (it can on the higher models) and it's one of the best air cases you buy.

I don't have anything special, but I've got a i7-3610QM in this hulk of a laptop I've got. Should be enough to deal well enough with whatever weird CPU reliant games comes out for a while longer.

Oh whoops, I actually misread your post and thought you said CPU. Their GPU pricing is not always as good as Newegg and Amazon.
Yeah, I heard Newegg was good for GPUs. I already know the one I want, hoping to get a good deal on it, so I can have a decent rig until I feel the need to finally dump some money into a powerhouse. I got everything else for this desktop pretty cheap, the only thing holding it back is the shitty integrated graphics. :wall:

Your computer makes me sad. Can I send you a spare video card or something? Too bad, all I have is Intel CPUs.

His processor doesn't meet the minimum spec either. They're looking for a Phenom II, while warreni is still rocking a first-gen Phenom.

You're screwed.

You don't meet the stiff minimum video-card requirement.

Your Nvidia card's 3 generations under the requirement (200 series, 300 series, 400 series, 500 series).

Hell, I have 1 GB of GTX 560 Ti - and being the actual minimum on a game...

...makes me wonder when I might have to do the video-card upgrade.

Especially if more games follow the trend and especially since new consoles are out...

EDIT:

When you buy video cards on the NVidia end, you want to aim normally where the two back-end numbers over 60 (mid-range model within a card's actual series).

I.e. Buy a 400 series card, get a 460 or better;

want a 500 series card, go for a 560 or better;

want a 600 series, 660 or better;

want a 700 series, 760 or better;

etc etc.
I've been thinking about a video card upgrade for a while, but it seems like Newegg doesn't sell too many PCI-e x16 cards anymore and the ones I've seen floating around appear to be sidegrades or downgrades. I guess you're right about new stuff leaving me behind with the PS4 and Xbone out but it'll be a good three years at least before I could afford a whole new system (missus is in school) so piecemeal upgrades are pretty much all I could possibly do. Given that I've got (I think) a 300W PSU and only a single slot for a graphics card, I'm not sure how many other upgrades are really feasible. For anyone who's really curious, this is a slightly modified HP Pavilion Elite m9350f.

Best deals at Microcenter are their CPU/motherboard combinations.  They were actually selling i7-4770k for $200ish last Black Friday.  Unfortunately I don't live anywhere within 200+ miles of one.  Their GPU prices aren't much better than what you'd find at Newegg or Amazon during promos.

I assume that's a typo? PCI-e is the most common type of video card Newegg sells. x16 is the number of lanes the PCI-e slot provides the device plugged into it.

EDIT: I just looked up your model and I'd recommend an Nvidia 750ti as well. Depending on what else you have installed in the PC you might have to upgrade the PSU. You can run it through an online PSU calculator and see what you need based on your installed parts.

How's the metal on the Cooler Master stuff? I'm not really an elitist or anything, but I can't stand thin stamped steel. As long as it feels sturdy, I might consider the HAF lineup.

Seriously, I have a 5870 (it's long) and 6850 (it's tall) just lying around you can have for shipping. Though, they'd both require more than a 300W PSU.

Warreni,

You can get good PSUs for around 20-25 if you don't mind waiting for a rebate. I got a Corsair CX500 for $25 after rebate and you can currently get one for $29.99 after rebate:

I never owned a 922 but I've had a 932 and am using an X right now. The case is extremely sturdy, it's steel but does NOT flex. The front bezel is plastic to keep the weight down but it's very well put together. As you can see based on the reviews on newegg, the 922 is a well loved case.

Don't buy into the hype of needing a huge PSU, it's simply marketing bull. Any good review site will show you the numbers for the TOTAL system, not just the card. Here's an example, again this is the TOTAL system load, not just the GPU.

Huh. Well, I'd probably need to peek inside my system, but I'm pretty sure height is going to be more of an issue than length. Either of those sounds like it'd be a substantial upgrade over my current card.

PM if you want to hash something out, Neuro515. And thanks.

Well, I just checked my specs again too. HP says I have a 460W PSU, so joke's on me! :whistle2:

I caved and purchased Transistor earlier today.

When I can play the game, I absolutely love it, and it reminds me of how much I enjoyed Bastion too.

However, this is probably THE buggiest game I have ever played in recent memory.  The game constantly crashes and lags, sometimes Red runs off screen randomly during a Turn, and the Performance exams in the Backdoor arena are guaranteed to freeze the entire game (this has happened 8 of 10 times so far).  I love this game but boy is this frustrating.

I agree with everyone else on the HAF lineup. Those cases are great. Roomy, sturdy, and has places to hide wires. Sometimes I open mine up just to admire how little clutter there is.

Although I did have an issue with one. The "X-dock" was faulty so I had to place the SSD in one the enclosures instead. Support took a long time to send me a replacement piece but I'll probably never use the thing anyway. I don't see a situation where I would need to switch in/out SSDs on the fly.

There are a lot of good cases in the market but I recommend the Fractal Design Define R4 for a clean simple design, the case is optimized for silence and has plenty of room for cable management. There are 3 colors to choose from and they have the optional window side panel for each color as well.

I like most things about my Corsair Obsidian 650D case... the issues I've had were:

They screwed up one of the bolts and it warped a piece of metal under the front face, it doesn't affect anything and is not visible.

I couldn't get the front panel USB 3.0 ports to work. Not sure if it was the ports or my motherboard or what but Corsair sent me a free replacement panel which I haven't bothered to try.

After about 1.5 years the fan controller died and took 2 fans with it. Corsair replaced them all for free.

If it wasn't for those problems it'd be nearly perfect. Sounds like a lot of problems but I didn't really like/want any other case. Each one had its own issues and this seemed like the best option. I did a lot of extensive research just in the last 5 months on a case for my brother and wound up getting him the same one in the end, although that was before my fan failures.

Whenever I get around to building a new PC, I'm torn between reusing my current Antec P182, reverting to an old Antec Sonata (original), or taking a chance on something like the Fractal R4 (which I've heard many good things about). I really hate top-fan mounts (noise leakage). Quiet and roomy are my priorities.

Efficiency, however, reaches its peak in PSUs at about 50% load, which is important to keep in mind if you want to run quiet and cool.

Still cannot believe that I bought one of those for $199 months ago... and by months I mean like 7 or so now. (It was at Micro Center.)

Edit: Thought it was Mooby who posted the deal...

For some reason I think it was a pre black friday deal... Not that it much matters in the scheme of things. It was most certainly worth the drive to Kansas.

Still need to upgrade the video card... and I'm still waiting for NVIDIA's new g-sync tech to make it out onto the open market in mass.

I want dat gsync and to move from 1200p to 1080 for console compatibility, but can't justify it. I got a very nice 24" Dell not long ago. Maybe I can pass it on to my brother for $200 but he's such a cheap ass.

I can understand that... Both the desire and not being able to justify it. Luckily, my monitor isn't that new... (but there is really little to nothing wrong with it.)

I'm running a Fractal XL R2 that I'm happy with, outside of a few nitpicks. Very roomy, solid, and well designed. Easy to wire neatly and lots of space for drives. The things I am less thrilled about are the front audio and usb ports feel a bit flimsy, and I have had issues with the headphone out. Also, there is no drive activity indicator. Otherwise a strong +1 for Fractal cases.

Not an issue if you buy a quality PSU.

80plus.jpg
Exactly, I should have added it's far more important to get a good quality lower total wattage PSU over a no name cheapo that's supposedly 1000w. I love Seasonic and it's the only brand I use (well Corsair right now but it has Seasonic guts) but there's several other good manufacturers out there. I'd recommended checking some reviews at www.hardocp.com, they have a great testing system for PSU's.
