NZA 1 and 2 are standalones and completely freaking awesome, but very different from the base game. Base game is point a to b stealth/action missions with a snipe to finish it.

NZA is point a to b with wave after wave of zombies and then a boss mission at the end with waves of and waves of zombies and usually actual bosses. It's a ton of fun, but really hard solo (and even co-op) but much easier co-op.

I was actually suprised by the quality of the MP. It isn't anything I'll probably ever play again, of course, but for a multiplayer that had no right to exist-let alone be fun-I was surpised at how competent it was. I just wish that The Bat and Robin only had one life, respawning makes it too easy for them to bumrush you without worrying about dying.

(cut some stuff out to be lazy about not multiquoting) The biggest issue I've seen with Sims expansions/DLC, or at least used to be, was the fact they'd cut everything out back to the base game for the new version, then re-release all the DLC. They did at least add a few new things now and then and new DLC but still can understand people getting a bit pissy that the new Sims is charging for the same stuff they already had added to the old one then stripped out for the new one. It was terrible in 1 and 2, because (if I recall) 2 went back to one where you stuck in the house, which gets really boring pretty quickly.

To the other I agree people seem to bash games now for having too much DLC, even when the DLC isn't at all needed. Case in point, Paradox (Railworks works too) games. CK II gets too much stick for it's mass DLC when about 4 of them are actually useful and you really only need to get 2 (Rome for Retinues and Old Gods for the earlier start date), if I recall they tend to add a lot of the features of the DLCs into the base game with a free patch, think maybe a few things aren't available but rarely that important unless you really want it. Islam/Republic/Old Gods added nations to play with different play styles which kept it getting boring, but other didn't need them (except Old Gods if you wanted 867 start date).

The rest is pretty much money grubbing crap, but I like DLC like that because it lets them continue to make money/support the game without cutting content out. No-one needs new portraits, songs, crests but hey, people buy them for some reason so *Shrug*.

I think the completionist stuff comes from the old(er) style of DLC/Expansions, where it was new pieces of the game, or additions on to it, and with some companies the stuff they cut out to get extra money. Ergo you "needed," all of it to get the full experience. Of what I've owned with lots of DLC now, most seem to be merely cosmetic or unlock something quicker or new weapons you don't really need, etc. With maybe one or two that add something useful.

I do hate devs, or some anyways, who have seemed to decide that now that the economy is slowly getting better they can stop putting the same discount on the DLC as they do the base game. I know it is business, but obviously they weren't feeling they were losing too much before, so it feels they decided that now people might have more money it is time to screw them over. To be fair, bundle sites, sites selling games, etc. seemed to come to the same conclusion as well.

You could always set it to send you an email notification every time you get a new PM and then set the email client to make noise. You could even make a new email just for that purpose so you knew all the noises were PMs.

RE: DLC and The Sims

I think Motoki really hit it on the head. EA is nickel and diming everybody with the constant stream of hats, purses, fences, lamps, Victorian mansions, et cetera that are available on The Sims Store, but they're only appeasing the fans. Sims-obsessed people love this stuff. I don't quite understand it, as I've spent a few hours playing 3 and it seems a bit dull. However, the expansions do offer a lot of content, even if they do seem a bit overpriced. 

RE: Arkham Origins DLC

Cold, Cold Heart is the only bit that's worthwhile unless you're really into the multiplayer mode or challenge maps (I'm not too interested in either). Rather than ponying up for the season pass, you're better off waiting for 75% on Mr. Freeze.

That's my tuppence for the evening. This thread is just work during the sales. . . .

 
I personally think that when the new Batman game is nearing we will see a drastic drop in price on Origins. This may be the last big Steam sale where the game + Season Pass stays above $10. I'm waiting.

I don't know how much I'd read into that. For one, the HD update was co-developed by Hidden Path -- they did Defense Grid. Not only have they been very open, in my experience, but also very competent.

Now I don't play AoE 2 HD online as I rarely play competitive multiplayer games anymore, so I can't speak to that, and I'm certainly not a high level player by any means. From what I've played though (~10 hours), it's a terrific update of a classic game. There's a crap-ton of gametime stuffed into the package. Of course, it helps if you like the AoE formula.

Having said that, I stand by my statement that AoM is the superior game and update.

 
So if you have Skyrim can you buy/add Skyrim Legendary to your account?

The pandas have it for 4 TF2 keys which would be less than my $10 buy price for it and quite honestly, I'm in no mood to support Bethesda directly so might as well feed a commie.  

 
Finished catching up, on the rage front I'm waiting for SNOW to show up as a flash sale. If there isn't some good rage about that, I don't know when there will be good rage (other then DayZ level discounts). 

Then again Nosgoth is up there so I guess that has already been done now. Unless by F2P they mean no subscription fees, but imagine it is more the common use for it.

If it helps at all, Skyrim Legendary Activates as "Skyrim" not "Skyrim Legendary". Where as when I bought Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City GOTY they activated with "GOTY" attached to the names on Steam. So you would be essentially adding DLC to the base game if it would work.

So discussion about card drop rates has got me thinking.  Pointless theorycraft under the cut.

Do different games, in fact, have different drop rates?  Can shorter games be set to kick out cards more quickly than longer ones?  Is this something the dev sets?  From what I've read, the devs are responsible for number of cards, and it's pretty clear that the sweet spot for card values occurs when a game has 5 or 7 total cards making it more likely that the player ends up with half the set and decides to buy the remaining two or three.  With more people crafting badges and higher-value cards, the dev gets a cut of larger values and more transactions as more boosters are generated.

So influencing drops such that the player gets their cards more quickly looks like it would be the most beneficial option for the devs.  UNLESS...

Assuming the dev does have control over drop rate, how much control is it?  Can you set the first card to drop in the first three minutes, then space the rest at 15-minute intervals?  Can you make the last one take 25 just to toy with people?

Can you make the last one take 200 hours after the penultimate?

Imagine, in the first week the game is available, no one gets that last drop.  People wonder if it's glitched.  Idlers give up and move on.  Badgewhores buy up existing cards and craft their badges, and doing so generates boosters for all who are eligible.  All... one person.  The dev.  The only person who's had the game long enough to have earned that final drop is the one earning all of the boosters.  The dev opens the cards and feeds them back onto the market for their value in GaveNBux plus the commission check.

After that first week, the "glitch" is fixed.  People start earning their last card, and no one's the wiser.

Except GabeN knows.  How could he not?  He saw you do it.  And he will never, ever, forget.

Anyway, that's how I'm going to get rich in Steam wallet money.  I'll finally be able to afford every train and every pinball table.  Maybe some music mixing software, too.

I sometimes wonder if Valve has any intentions at all of being a game developer in the future. They have had immense success being a delivery platform for established and indie developers. Their new ventures seem to be headed towards adding to that gaming platform resume.

They'll probably develop a new version of the Source engine to license to people I'd imagine, but that doesn't necessarily mean they'll be using it themselves. After all, game development for AAA titles takes an hefty investment and comes with some risk. (probably not for them though if they stick to their beloved franchises)

I personally think that when the new Batman game is nearing we will see a drastic drop in price on Origins. This may be the last big Steam sale where the game + Season Pass stays above $10. I'm waiting.

Considering the fact that the new game got pushed to 2015, I think they'll keep this from having a GOTY edition until January. That's just my personal opinion, of course.

And once they have a GOTY edition then the DLC I haven't bought will become unavailable - just like what happened when Arkham City GOTY came out.

No surprise, but I would have been happy to complete my Skyrim DLC with ten GabeNBux or fewer.

Voting for games in batches, 4v4.  The typical contest between three individual choices was too restrictive and divisive and marred by people voting just for their card drops.  This setup gives a better chance of an unprecedented sale price winning the vote.  I hope they never go back to 1v1v1 for the voting.

A Word of Advice for Fellow CAGs, Both Newbs and Vets:

75% is an excellent rule when your backlog has more years' gameplay than you have life expectancy, but for anyone who would be likely to actually, you know, play the game in the next month or so, don't listen to the naysayers.  Forget percentages.  All that matters is whether paying that amount (in card money, if applicable) and supporting the dev at this stage of the game's existence is worth the amount to you right now.  Sure, it will be cheaper some day and bundled some (ideally) later day than that, but the extra few bucks you kick in now to play it when you want to has its own value.

Unless it's something that's been bundled for less, recently.  Then you're just an idiot.

curious if anyone bought the Wasteland 2 Deluxe Edition. They indicated that the retail price will be lower but something about it that makes me want to pay and play it in early access right now. Please someone talk me off the ledge.....

 
So fake CAGed on Dynasty Warriors, because for the more I looked at it, and thought about things like Hyrule Warriors the more I was itching for a Musou game.  Hell the only game I got all the acheivements for on my 360 was Fist of the North Star Ken's Rage... it's not a great game but something about wading through thousands of mooks and just laying waste is endlessly entertaining.  So the last few hours have been spent with Lu Bu laying waste to several thousand poor Chinese bastards and objectively I've paid too much, but I don't care because it's scratching that specific itch I had and it's been thoroughly entertaining with a few beers and there's of course no shortage of content with the game, so it'll keep me well entertained for as long as I feel like throwing guys all over a map with a wide variety of weapons.  These games (and to a lesser extent the Basara games) are as close as we're ever getting to Final Fight and Streets of Rage in this day and age.  So yeah, if you have any inclination towards the game go for it, also I kind of doubted it would get any cheaper by Winter, but I may be wrong.

You're absolutely right about the 4vs4 Community Vote being a game-changer for sales going forward, the logic in supporting a dev and playing a game you actually want now, and the fun of the Color Wars.

I wonder the chances the Pac-Man games hit another sale. Seems like the Japanese developers are least likely to allow a big sale for their games. I don't think I've ever seen older games like Onimishu and stuff that are ON Steam actually go on sales.

If you play it right away and get the value out of what you paid, there's not too much shame. Some, but not too much.

Read up, I think all purchases on steam get it. I'm not sure though.

..and yet it was free, some time ago, via UBI. No longer though.

The higher price is to milk fans of the original. You're not only paying to play an unfinished game, you're paying extra to play an unfinished game. Don't do that.

 
While I'm here - anybody have problems running Red Faction Armageddon on Windows 8.1?

I can get it to launch, but the moment the menu screen starts to load, it crashes. I've googled and tried everything I could find to no avail.

I really want to blow up stuff :(

It's also in the Hitman Collection that Squeenix still hasn't added Contracts to.

There's one in Steam's database with all Hitman games, but Squeenix hasn't put it up for sale, ever.
