for anybody who was lamenting the fact that jade empire didn't win that one community choice, it's 3 bucks at gog right now. and the gog version works, unlike the steam one. and it's 74 cents cheaper than the steam version would be

so have at it

 
Idk why owning Gone Home is an embarrassment. Gone Home was a unique experience. Game play is lacking, sure. But, the experience was a fun one to find everything and understand everything. I totally recommend it for a few bucks.

I haven't played it, but I assume it is the lack of gameplay combined with the premise. Like, walking around doing nothing in some sort of world where ghosts or zombies exist at least has a premise I'm not likely to encounter in real like. But visiting my old room at my parents house with all my old shit from high school is something I just did in January

Okay, little backstory for you.

Here in the PC threads on CAG, a regular buying a game that is inevitable bundle fodder (or a bundle at full price, or anything along those lines) is clearly the incentive for which that game/bundle/etc. gets bundled/pricedropped/etc. sooner rather than later--unless, of course, somebody jinxes it. Humble Squenix Bundle dropping tomorrow, by the way.

So the sacrifice (and embarassment, as you aptly put it) is in jumping the gun and buying it early.

Well, this house looks kinda nice.  (quite a bit of detail regarding misc clutter)

Man, this house is huge!  (tons of rooms.  somehow this suburban house has as many as a mansion)

This place sure has a lot of secret compartments.

I hope there's more to do in this game than what i'm doing right now.  (there isn't)

Well, that was kinda creepy.  I wonder what will happen with that..  this might be getting interesting.  (you run across some weird stuff.  could have been a nice surprise or curveball.   it wasn't)

Wait, that's the end of the game?  NO.. NO.. NO!    stinking cliche ending..

I shouldn't have bought this at 66 percent off.  (yeah, like last Winter sale)

I want that hour of my life back.  (took me an hour to finish.  no rushing, checking pretty much everything)

While I agree with this, and the ending did hurt the game imo, I thought the journey to the ending (with the potential curve balls) was quite fun/enjoyable. Is it goty? No, not even close. But is it worth a few bucks? Yeah I'd say so.

The million $ question.

The only reason it got anywhere near the amount of praise it did was because of the subject matter. Plain and simple.

That's not to say that the particular subject matter was bad or anything, it was interesting. But someone more cynical might say it was deliberately placed in there to cash in on a certain crowd/be eligible for awards, much like certain movies are referred to as "Oscar bait".

It's an alright game though, but it's been done better imo.

I picked up Gone Home even though I know it will be in a bundle some day.  I had like $20 steambux I'm not spending at all this sale and I refrained from snagging Rogue Legacy, Risk of Rain and Gunpoint.  So I treated myself and kicked the devs some $ (even though that small team got paiiiid off this project).  I feel OK about it, 85% off still feels tight, and am pretty excited to sift through some nostalgic world building. 

 
While I enjoyed Gone Home for what it's worth (minus some immersion-breaking contrivances and cliches), I absolutely loved Gunpoint.  Of the four games you just mentioned, I would have ranked them: Gunpoint > Risk of Rain > Rogue Legacy > Gone Home.  I hope you do snag one of those other games during encore sale (or when they're repeated 3 times as daily and flash sales).

I think the short length is a plus, because if it only takes an hour max I might actually play through it. Of course, I'll have to get it bundled and hope Humble doesn't put it in tier 2.

 
Gone Home is complete trash. My steam review.

Mesmerizing, spell binding, awe-inspiring.....Word's can't describe this experi..........Nah, just kidding! Holy crap is this "game" the most pretentious trash I ever played in my life! Seriously, pretty sure I vomited in my mouth on more than a few occasions while playing this epic 2 hour saga of left wing propaganda run amok. If you love riffling through desk drawers and tossing out groceries from the fridge all over the floor in a desperate quest to find BUTTONS, this game is for you!

P.S. There has got to be a special place in hell for "developers" that list their cats names in the credits.

I don't think I'm going to buy Planet Explorers or Planetary Annihilation.

Planet Explorers just looks too Alpha even with the decent price and my love of minecraft.

Planetary Annihilation turned me off with their always online single player and insane starting price. 

If I am completely wrong please let me know (before 10am pst tomorrow.) thanks.

 
I would like to contribute to the tens of pages complaining about the last community vote by complaining about the fact that Just Cause 1 is currently only 50% off, $2.10 more expensive than Steam offered it for a month ago.

You might take a look at http://www.gaugepowered.com/ which lets you input the price you paid for each game and then adds it up and divides it by average price per game/price per hour of gaming. It's a lot of work, but pretty cool if you put the time in to fill everything in.

I enjoyed it quite a bit, but it's extremely polarizing and I feel the hype might have ruined people's expectations of it so it's hard to recommend without knowing the sort of games you like.

Most of the games people scream about not working on Steam are easily enough fixed if people take 5 minutes to look through the Steam Community forum.

Planetary Annihilation turned me off with their always online single player and insane starting price.

I really like Planet Explorers. It's one of the few games I Kickstarted even. I feel like there's a good bit that and I didn't find it a very alpha alpha at all. Hell, I've played some full release games on Steam that were much more alpha.

I like that there's the whole sandboxy thing without looking like gigantic blocks but there's also a sort of Skyrim style wander and talk to people do quests (with voice acting) etc going on. I feel like it's really well done and not bad at all at the sale price. I usually avoid Early Access like the plague (unless I get stuck with it from a bundle, thank you Indie Gala for those wonderful contributions) but Planet Explorers I feel is an exception.

Also the devs didn't do the usual greedy Kickstarter douche thing and try to extort extra money out of people by making people pay extra for beta and alpha access. Everyone even at the lowest tier (that included the game) got alpha access right away and got Steam keys when it came out on Early Access without a fuss.

They actually could have gone on Steam Early Access much earlier but I appreciate that they took the time to try and get the game a little more done. I did play it in some of the earlier direct download alphas and it's improved a good bit and they are regularly working on it.

I agree that short games can be very good.  (or horribly bad)  For the record, I like Gone Home. 

My ideas of a good and a bad short game:

BAD:  30 Flights of Loving "Wow, that was an interesting opening... wait, that was the whole game?  whaa..."

GOOD:  To the Moon  -  Not the prettiest to look at, but an excellent story that grabs onto you and hooks you emotionally.  (it did me anyway)

Honorable mention (good and bad):  Homefront  "Woohoo, this is like Red Dawn with Koreans!  Wow, that was fun, what's next?  Wait, that's the ending?  But, I've only been playing for 3 hours!  I want more!"

Yeah, I have one I've used since I started 4 years ago. About the same stats as you, actually.
 
Am I the only one who didn't like To The Moon ? 

Because I thought the story was weak and not as tear-jerking as everyone has been describing it.

I had to laugh at this. When I first started getting into PC gaming I was anti-drm and loved gog, now even if I find a deal at GOG (looking at you STALKER), I want it on Steam. What the hell happened to my thinking? Do I really need all my games in the same place? Damn Steam brainwashing I guess.

I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned until now. I'd chalk it up to the fact that most of his purpose in being on CAG was simply to rustle jimmies, and the reports finally caught up to him.

I'm disappointed that I didn't help him get there.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. I will probably snag Gunpoint and Risk of Rain before the sales over without burning through all my Steambux. Just got so tired of waiting for something to snag. I make environments, so I caved on Gone Home for inspiration and nostalgia reasons.

I just felt like commenting because everyone is talking so much shit on video games because of a weak sale. Video games are fucking awesome

The sale's just weird because there's some really good deals that pop up, but then there's just even more not so good ones or the same old, same old ones. I'm still pretty happy with the sale overall, most of my annoyance lies with dumb community votes, possible rigging, and the lack of discounts on packages.

If I say that a particular day of sales sucks, I don't mean to imply that I think the sale overall is crap or anything.

Or the other way around with the brainwashing. I think some of the anti-DRM crowd are really loud and vocal and militant about it (I can be too with certain types of DRM like limited activations, UGH) but really all DRM is not created equal, it's not all evil, it won't blow you computer up or send info back to big brother and some of it comes with convenience features that have completely changed the way many of us buy and store our PC games.

I used to hang out on an RPG forum filled with old musty Europeans living in the last century clinging to their retail boxes and trying their damnedest to resist any and all change. They would go on and on and on about how Steam was basically the antichrist and killed their cat, burned their house down and gave them cancer. I thought it was this really terrible evil thing. Then I accidentally got a game that required Steam, Magicka (shut up, I was a noob) and installed it and realized it wasn't so bad. Then I got New Vegas on a sale and then the 2011 Summer sale happened and I bought way too much crap including several whole publisher packs and I was hooked.

To me it just adds way more conveniences than it does restrictions and I wouldn't want a game without it now if I can at all help it, though I still make exceptions here and there.
