Welcome to the Steam deals thread V12, where we talk about just about everything except what games are on sale.
Please wipe your feet on the way in...

Summer Sale PSA: If you're new to Steam sales, be sure to check out both Enhanced Steam and Spoony's Official Guide to Steam Sales before you ask a question and/or spend more money than you'd care to say.

Before you ask, if a game is already a featured deal (daily/flash/community) that's the lowest it will go this sale. Feel free to buy without the worry it will get a better discount later on.

Funnily enough, that's the one that I have least of.
I've been selling all the Summer Cards I get. I plan on buying one set for the badge on the second to last day. My theory is that the prices will continue to fall until the last day when all the procrastinators try to finish their sets so might as well sell while the prices are higher and then buy what I need cheaper.

If a game is in early access right now, and it retails at $19.99. When the game is complete, will the retail price jump up? I asking for a general answer. Thanks

For Red Robin you might have to go in store and pick up a membership card for free and then register it online.

Red Robin does it too if you sign up for their rewards club. 1 free burger the month of your birthday. If you have a place called The Keg they also give you a free dinner. We have one out here. I'm going Saturday for steak. I was at Red Robin on Tuesday :)
Awesome....might have to check out Red Robin's my bday month, I love that place. Also all these free eatery tips is pretty awesome, might actually look forward to getting older this year haha.

Wow I passed out at 10pm and never got to purchase goat simulator. I even had it open on my browser. Oh well you snooze you lose (literally in my case).
I'd be surprised if it didn't go on sale again before the sale is over...just keep up to date w/everything

Picked up the LA Noire complete edition, never did get to play any of the dlc when I bought it on ps3 way back when. Also regret not spending more time just exploring the city.

Good, the world needs less AAA devs. May they all starve or make quality indie games, instead. Anyway, the whole piracy argument is moot. Everyone and their mother pirates these days whether it's games or movies or music or porn. Anyone who doesn't do it is either lying or over sixty. And still... everyone stays in business. AAA publishers and studios stay afloat so they can bring us more awesome five hour cinematic shooters.
I seriously can't condone or defend posts like this. This kind of mentality has to stop and maybe it will once the government actually actively does something about the pirates besides just the empty threat of jail time and high fees.

Does that activate the PC copies for all of those too?
They are all Steamplay so they should, though I seem to remember a few people buying The Force Unleashed for Mac and not having it activate the Windows version on their account for some reason.
I believe that the game that people had problems with was Jedi Outcast.

It has since been fixed. The key will give you both games.

Ain't nobody on this forum who hasn't pirated something in some form or another. As far as government intervention I think they've flushed enough taxpayer money down the crapper in recent years to start chasing another phantom problem.

Long Live the Queen is okay, but it's way too linear. You just die and start over until you figure out which way the game wants you to play it. There's a lot of ways to die but only one good ending (she doesn't get killed and then she becomes the queen). Compared to Princess Maker 2, where there are several endings depending on how you play. She can become a general or a scholar or a bandit or all sorts of things. I know the developer tries to downplay the similarities between the two games, but pfft. For $2.50, I'd give it a try, and if you do like it, try Princess Maker 2 in DOSbox. It was localised to English but never released and now you can find it at any abandonware site.
So what you're saying is that Princess Maker 2 doesn't have achievements or steam cards? Pass.

Pretty sure Long Live the Queen is the same game as The Stanley Parable, minus the narrator and plus pink. I'm in.

That sounds like overscan (on the TV) screwing something up. Have you tried to disable it?
1216 x 684 is what I have to manually set it to after it overscans. It works fine, but my issue, which is very minor, is some games don't have that resolution as an option. So I have to choose the closest alternative. I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and what they ended up choosing as the next best resolution.

Everyone and their mother pirates these days whether it's games or movies or music or porn. [...] And still... everyone stays in business.
And then everyone whines that game studios just pump out the same micro-transaction Call of Battlefield shooters, the same rehashed remakes of 1980's films, the same autotuned dance pop and the same barely legal interracial double penetration crap. All the safe choices with guaranteed profit even in the face of piracy.

Well, that sounds very compassionate. I can assume that you don't make your living in the game industry. I hope people don't feel the same way about whatever it is you do.

So, where did you get your avatar? Did you draw it by hand, based off a concept of your own creation? If not, did you have the consent of the individual who had the full rights to the image? If you just took that image from someplace, then you "pirated it". Did you think people who pirate avatars should go to jail?

I'm not trying to defend the theft of property, but I am trying to make a point. For instance, my avatar is an original piece of artwork, which I do own. However, it was released by Upper Deck, under a licenses from Marvel, and even though the artist has no issue with my using it, I probably couldn't withstand a legal challenge from either Upper Deck or Marvel in terms of my continued use of it.

The point being, that everyone on the internet steals. They might not mean to, they might just be terribly ignorant of the law, but you ever hear those notices about "express written consent"? That really applies to any creation of any sort. Unless rights are waived, (or instances of parody or fair use), you're not allowed to just take some image, some drawing, picture, what ever, and appropriate it for your own use. That's every bit as much stealing as downloading a movie, or game without consent.

If you really think all pirates should go to jail or what not, then I suggest you lead a very boring life of reading fine print. Screenshots, videos, memes, avatars, YouTube links, quotes, etc... if you didn't come up with something entirely yourself, or didn't find consent, you can't use it without stealing.

I said before that I was a "victim" of piracy, and I also explained the pros or cons. I'm not to either extreme, I don't think digital piracy is really all that harmful, it's not like avatars have made artists go out of business or something. I don't think a majority of people who pirate had any intention of paying for it, for instance how much would you have paid for your avatar? Probably nothing, right? And if you really are so concerned, you're going to march out there and find some public domain art and use it instead. On the flip side though, it is entirely naive to think that everyone who pirates wouldn't have purchased something either. It's a factor, albeit a relatively small one in my mind. Things can be reproduced indefinitely in digital form, and in the same way that a developer can give away a million copies of a game without really losing money, something can be pirated over and over with moderate losses to the rights owner.

This sort of ambiguity is one reason you rarely see rights violations result in jail time. If you threw everyone in jail for doing it, then almost everyone would be in jail. Heck, I see all kinds of businesses and what not appropriate art I darn well know belongs to Disney or what not. You can't just go around throwing them in jail, but sure, enforce the law. The way it works now though, is that largely is in the hand of the rights owner themselves. They can track down violators, and usually they'll just ask them to stop. Remember, this is a different sort of theft. A robbery, of physical items, or a counterfeiter is operating in a realm of physical items, of things with finite value. That is an entirely different thing and of course jail time is an appropriate response. But, if someone got thrown in jail every time they used an uncleared sample, or violated a copyright, then I guess only babies and people in comas would be outside of them.

Yeah, piracy is definitely a problem, and while I don't feel as strongly as some people on the board right now, there's not really much defending it either. Even if the effects of piracy are overblown, If it wasn't a problem at all pc gamers would likely have a better experience

If a game is in early access right now, and it retails at $19.99. When the game is complete, will the retail price jump up? I asking for a general answer. Thanks
Some do jump in price, others do not.
What he said. There's literally no standard. Valve just said 'Welp, here you go. Release your unfinished stuff' and then gave no guidelines. Everyone seems to be still trying to figure out what works and what doesn't.

Generally, if an Early Access game's price is going to go up the developer will try to advertise that as a selling point on the page 'Buy now and get it before the price goes up!'. Though keep in mind the price increasing after release doesn't preclude a heavy discount on sale making the game cheaper than it was in Early Access or even putting it in a bundle. Don't be shocked if that $20 Early Access game turns into a $30 released game that goes into a $1 Indie Gala bundle with 5 other games.

Also, so far it seems like maybe 3% of the Early Access games have actually gone to release. Most linger in there for a really long time because there is no incentive for them to release by X date nor any penalty for them not doing so. That game that says 'Buy now before it goes out of Early Access and then price goes up' may not go out of Early Access for years. Or ever.

Early Access = Caveat Emptor.

It's not even that bad of a problem in the US, Canada and Western Europe. The real places where it's completely rampant are Russia, China and then some third world countries. What are we going to do, bomb the two biggest countries in the world and arrest all the poor people?

I feel like that's bullshit excuse to hand us a shit sandwich and then try to blame us for it. There's other factors that are bigger like the proliferation of shitty Intel integrated graphics, the price of PCs (they've gone down but they still aren't that cheap and when you buy a cheaper one guess what kind of graphics you get?) and then the latest thing 'Oh noes we can't let the PC outshine 'nextgen' consoles!'.

In spite of all that millions of games get sold on Steam so obviously people are buying them. I find it funny that publishers like Ubisoft on the one hand act like all their PC sales are going down the drain and no one on the PC is buying games yet on the other they see Steam's massive success and are trying to copy that with their own client to try and get a piece of the pie.

Dat game is not on sale!
Well it is on sale. Just not a good sale.

Speaking of Piracy, I need to find a Russian to sell it to me cheap. :p

Happy Birthday Fox! (on Sunday, in case I forget)

It's not even surprising anymore.   Red steamrolls the map.  Crap community vote sales that are nothing but repeats.  Lack of DLC sales.  And those two above talking about pirating even though we're talking STEAM sales.  (facepalm)

If Foxhack wants to challenge for "Best Fox in the World" he'd have to try gifting me a $10 game. CheapOl'Fox already set the bar pretty high here.

My argument wasn't that it's all pc gamers' fault, or that Ubisoft is clean from any of their stupid decisions. It was more just acknowledging that pirating 60 dollar games isn't really an acceptable thing to do, and the "well a lot of people do it" excuse isn't really a good excuse at all. Does Ubisoft have some shitty practices and spew out a good deal of bullshit? Absolutely. Is there anything wrong with expressing concern over what may amount to millions of dollars of lost revenue? No.

The N64 and PSX come to mind in terms of piracy. One reason Nintendo stuck with the cartridge was because of piracy concerns, and for the PSX, I knew a lot of people getting them and having them modded. It became a selling point, and of course the Playstation was much more successful than the N64, piracy and all. If nothing else, that shows that being overly concerned about piracy, at the expense of your product, can backfire. The movie industry was against VHS! Think about how huge the home movie market is, and the fact that movies are still breaking box office records. Remember how controversial Napster and MP3s were, yet they laid the groundwork for online music services, which are wildly popular and lucrative (acts are making more now than ever).

Piracy and success go hand in hand. The C64 was quite success, and everyone with one seemed to have piles of copied disks. The Nintendo DS was a massive success, and though games were easily pirated, it didn't seem to deter major developers from releasing games. It also reminds me of what Sega did with Dreamcast, pulling out of the console market and using piracy as one excuse. They had trouble getting developers on board well before it became known how easily it played burns. I can't think of any examples of "digital" piracy taking down something truly popular. I can think of plenty examples of piracy blamed for something that struggled all along, or extreme measures taken to "protect" things that were already quite lucrative.

Ugh, I already owned Knights of the Old Republic apparently, even though it wasn't present in my library. Is there an easy way to check for this, to see if I have other games in my ownership not in my library?

EDIT: code redemption was taking a long time. Maybe it errored out? Not sure why the game wouldn't have been present in my library if I owned it. And I tried using a code I already used, but it doesn't give you a unique error message saying the code has been used. Just that I own it, and it asks if I want to proceed with installation. So I guess I can only assume the KotOR key was used

That was the part I take exception to. Just because it goes on doesn't mean those of us who buy our games should have a lesser experience because of it.

Piracy goes on in a lot of industries. Consoles have it too. It's extremely rampant for television and movies. Game of Thrones is one of the most pirated shows ever. Does that mean they should go 'Sorry, we're losing so much money to piracy we're going to cut costs by filming on green screen'?

Because that's essentially the line that PC gamers are being fed, or at least that significant effort is not being put into our products, even though a significant number (that is higher than 5%, thank you Ubisoft) pay for them.

And with that, I have to go to work and get stuck with my only connection to CAG being phone in a building where I get crap reception for the rest of the day so if you want to rebuttal and win at the internets go for it.

Ummm, free filet mignon n shrimp is pretty damn good.

Beni also makes da best fried rice.

I think you might have missed a post I quoted you in a few days ago. You should probably try to find it.
You are right. Beni is awesome. Not free (by a long shot) but one of these years I want to do their Chef program, where you spend a day learning how to cook hibachi and then get to serve three friends while you cook. Sounds pretty kick ass

Any feedback on Prototype/Prototype 2? I was hoping they'd be bundled for cheaper by now, maybe 7.50 for both games, but no bundle and no MSRP drop. I still feel that $10 is too much, debating if I should keep on my wishlist or remove.

No offense to you for using your post as my catalyst but this is why this is such a fruitless debate. It's all half-assed guesses, anecdotes and terrible comparisons. Yes, movies break box office records. There's also 80 million more people in the US than there were in 1985. Yes, Napster helped "lay the groundwork" for digital music sales -- after costing the industry billions of dollars. "Hey, be sure to thank me for helping you convert to a more energy efficient roof by setting fire to your house!" Commodore wasn't a major publisher of software so how well the C64 sold is pretty irrelevant since people were pirating software from 3rd party developers. Using an avatar is equivalent to wide scale software piracy the same as "You drive 2mph over the limit so you can't speak against people driving 70mph over." Or it's all "Well, I once pirated something and then bought it so all pirates must buy the stuff they copy!"

I don't claim to have the answers. Hell, I don't even claim to care that much. But God damn, does this debate draw out some horrible, illogical and fallacious arguments (from both sides).

Amazon once had some ridiculous deal on them ($7 for both or something?) that I think most people here got in on. It's never been repeated and I don't expect to ever see it again. I only played the first game and only got a few hours in before just moving on. It was pretty cool in parts -- hopping buildings, running up walls, using bits of the environment as weapons but something about it didn't really grab me. I never tried Prototype 2 to see if it was better.

If you ever wanted to feel awesomely overpowered, it might be worth playing because you really do feel like you have superpowers. I can't blindly recommend it if I didn't get more than a few hours into it though.

This piracy argument is a fallacy.  I could easily pirate stuff on every system from Nintendo on.  Hell with the 360, you could extend the case, replace the one chip, and add 2-3 hard drives and do that too.  EVERYTHING can be copied.  But by pissing off the people that PAY you to do stuff, you're essentially telling me to not pay if possible.    Look at all those archaic locks wherein you could only install the game 3-5 times.  That's ridiculous.

My wife and I go every year on our birthdays. Kind of a tradition now. One year, my wife got me the chef for a day package. Totally worth it - I got a training session and got to eat my meal, and the package includes dinner for four (IIRC). I had a blast. They keep the cooking and tricks pretty basic, but I learned a bunch including the corny jokes (egg roll, Japanese Coca-Cola, etc. - you know what I mean if you've eaten there). I strongly recommend doing it if you're interested.

I'd probably forget I was carrying shards of glass in my pocket and cut myself before I even got the chance to put one in my drink.
I assumed it chipped off something else in the dishwasher or something. It wasn't large but came up through the straw and luckily I had a "what the hell is that?" sensation prior to swallowing. I told our server mainly in a "You'd probably want to know..." manner and that led to the manager coming out, apologizes, desserts and a comped meal. I'm sure they were all ready for me to flip out and threaten to call my lawyer and the evening news but it really wasn't a big deal in my opinion. Ironically, we were there for my son's birthday meal.

Well unlike you LOSERS, I've found an actual DEAL today. So ner ner ner.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00I3U9HG2?pc_redir=1403606705&robot_redir=1

Wasteland 2 pre-order on Amazon UK. Not sure if that's mega-cheap, but £25.xx is the cheapest I can recall seeing.

You can go back to your piracy bitching now. I'm rising above all of this.

P.s. I was raised on ZX Spectrums and Amiga 500s. I've never even heard of the P-word before.
