Yeah, the 50% off coupon stacked with the sale price. Probably the first coupon I've ever used on Steam.

There's a coupon for the Emperor Edition out there, a coupon for the DLC and a coupon for the Gold Edition (Emperor Edition + DLC)

I had an extra 1, but I gave it to pasports yesterday. If you add me on Steam, I'll see what I can do about hooking you up with another one.

 
Contextualized trademarks - good idea or no?

IE you can name your location Crazy Monster Mini Golf, but you can't have Monster in your name and sell electronic accessories.  Would apply to name only and not branding (so no McDonald's gas stations w/ the golden arches).  Cuts down on pointless lawsuits.  Just the start of an idea, so it may be stupid.

Add in an absolute trademark that applies only to companies that have thoroughly penetrated consumer conciousness (Coca-Cola, McDonald's, etc.).  Just spitballing.

You guys don't understand IP law at all. Whatever they do in any other country has nothing to do with the US or the supreme court. They aren't circumventing anything. Each country has their own IP system and if they want to preserve their rights in each country then they have to file suit in those countries as well. It's actually not about the win/loss in any country, it's the fact they have to show they are aggressively protecting the mark even in instances where they might lose.

That's actually largely how it works now, especially with common words. Jewel grocery stores can't make me stop naming my jewelry store Syntax Error's Jewels. They probably could stop me from calling my store "Jewel of the Aisle Groceries" (I just made that up, clever huh?).

It's different for a unique name like Coca-Cola. I can't start Coca-Cola Electronics under the defense that I'm not selling soda.

 
Don't be dissing Princess Maker 2 or 3....both very good games, many routes to victory and many endings. I enjoyed them a hell of a lot for sure!

Also: if devs would just issue coupons for as little as 10% off that stacked w/sales, I'll bet they'd see a substantial increase in sales when their product goes 75% off...it makes people feel like they're getting a great deal w/the stacking sales...I probably would've bought a few more games if more coupons stacked

I don't know, Sins of a Solar Empire is an established franchise, with the word Rebellion just indicating an entry in the series. I really can't see anyone making the connection to Rebellion, the game studio. Seems like a dick move/trademark trolling by them for easy money to me, since i have no doubt they can afford good lawyers and probably make more money than Stardock does. They probably just wanted Stardock to settle.

Rebellion's never had their studio's name in one of their titles either. I'd really like to see their "evidence" for trademark infringement, I also don't see why Stardock would pick the name deliberately for Rebellion's audience. Rebellion isn't exactly the best game making studio either (Rogue Warrior, anyone?).

Hopefully they get beat in Canada too.

Well, it should be allowed as they should have the chance to prove that some other place (mini golf or otherwise) is creating a misleading impression that they're involved in that business. Whether or not they should win would depend on the case itself. In most cases I'd say no, but who knows. For instance, if they used the font of Monster energy drinks, I'd say there is a valid case even if normally I wouldn't think the two trademarks would infringe upon one another.

I know I jumped from Monster electronics to Monster energy drinks there for the sake of making an easy example.

This brings up an interesting story, and I won't name the artist (although you now should know it), because it's not something he's shared publicly. One of the artist I was associated with went about trying to trademark the alias he was using. Interestingly enough, he got it trademarked in the UK, and I forget where else he tried, but he couldn't trademark it in the United States because Nintendo already trademarked it. It's a weird sort of issue, one being a rapper, the other being a video game, and it in fact being a word in another language. His trademark might not have even stood in the UK if Nintendo contested it, but it's just a complex and weird issue. Apple had issues when they launched a music service as well, and I believe had to pay a large sum of money.

You know a Steam sale isn't trying hard when you actually want to pay full price for newer releases that look better than the deals you're getting....(Thinking of Shovel Knight).
