Steam - UT3 Free Weekend + 40% off purchase

in regards to the Epic hate i've been reading, i have both UT3 and Gears of War on PC, and i have had little to no problems with them. i haven't played UT3 in a while, but am looking forward to the updates it's received with the titan pack. But i remember it running FLAWLESSLY. over 60fps with everything maxed. Gears of War was the same thing. i had heard some horrible things regarding it but took a chance and bought it anyway. never had any problems after some patching problems, but that's more Live's fault than anything.

ANYWAY, changing subjects to UT3. i see that they're calling the updated version Unreal Tournament 3 BLACK. So if i registered my retail copy, i still get the updates right? i figure i probably will, but if i right click and go to the 'view updates' page, the patch hasn't been listed yet. Perhaps i have to manually install it or something?

I've had this game installed and fully updated on my system for awhile. Is it worth uninstalling, registering through Steam, and reinstallig?
Regardless, you were quick to make some harsh statements about UT3 and Epic, not to mention snapping at curry. I'm just saying if it works for everyone BUT you, it's probably something YOU did.
Did you actually READ what I wrote? Like ALL the words? You couldn't have because you repeatedly mouth off condescendingly about things I've already refuted in my posts.

I bought UT3 15 months ago and from the get-go, it was a crash-fest before becoming absolutely useless. If it was only me, why is there a thread from ONE MONTH AGO about beta drivers that may fix the problems for some people? If it's just me, why is there a stickied thread with over 270 posts following a lead post filled with INI tweaks to try and resolve problems with the game? Why are there threads about the game gacking when OpenAL is chosen for audio and so on and on?!? Hmmmm? How about Gears eating save games as many suffered here, here, here, and here? Are ALL those people screwing up?

What makes snotty posts like yours so annoying is that it reveals a rigidly narrow-minded mentality that disregards any experiences that differ from yours. If you don't have a problem with something, than no one is having a problem unless they're stupid or inferior to you. Uh-huh. Right. Puh-leeze. You don't know a thing about me, my rig or my technical skills, but you're certain that whatever is wrong is user error; very arrogant of you, pal.

Maybe one day, you'll have a problem with a game and will complain about it and for karmic balance, I hope you get the same treatment in return from some other twerp. Maybe you'll learn something, though I suspect introspection isn't your strong suit. I shant disrupt this thread further with contrary words about your sweet baboo, Cliffy B, and his most awesomest employer. Ta!

EDIT: Duke, you'll get Black for free if you register with steam. It's 100% free.

Steam achievements so you may want to.
Saving space, gutting the quote.
Calling me narrow-minded? Coming from the guy who wouldn't take the idea if it being his software or hardware as an answer and only that it was UT3? I beg to differ.

I also never said that Epic was an excellent company with wicked awesome support or anything Cliffy B obsessive. They're an OK company that makes pretty good games. Nothing super stellar but they do a good job (Aside from that Gears PC, terrible port)

I simply picked on you (For lack of a better word) because of how you handle yourself. You're downtrodding and have a "Holier than thou" attitude. I don't appreciate it when people take simple trouble shooting ideas and wipe their ass with them. You are right, I don't know your rig and I don't know your technical skill so I'll start small with something like lackluster hardware or driver issues in case you are completely tech retarded.

I hope you realize I don't start e-fights or anything for kicks, I simply stand my ground with my principles, one of them being I don't like people who act like you do.

I know I've never had any issues with Epic games. In fact I had an email question answered personally by Mark Rein. So they're cool with me.
I know Gears of War PC had the problem of saves being deleted, for some people. They're definitely not perfect.
You folks are forgetting the most "recent" incident with Gears PC.

$12 for UT3 is a great deal but unfortunately the appeal of arena style DM games aren't really up my alley anymore.

A lot of people feel that way. Fortunately, there are 8 gametypes (four of which are not arena-style DM variants), about a dozen or so mutators, and dozens of really cool modifications - many of which aren't even in the first-person-shooter genre.

Still, I know it's not for everyone. But for $11.99, there's a lot of fun stuff to be done.

The game has suddenly disappeared off the list of "Not Installed" games where you can download it.

Damnit...

I enter my UT3 key and it says it's already activated to my account, but it's not in my games. I can't find a way to download the free trial either.

Maybe they pulled it? too many downloading?
I sued to play UT 99 constantly back in the day. These newer one sjust don't appeal to me for some reason.
Probably because bigger and better things came out. These games haven't progressed much at all. Nowadays games need more than bot-filled multiplayer matches disguised as a single player campaign too. It's boring and tedious. With that said though, this game is tons of dumb fun if you're into that. I enjoy it for what it is.

That's part of the charm, it's nostalgic. Not to mention after playing games like Dystopia or Team Fortress 2, sometimes I just want a game that doesn't require teamwork for you to wreck face.

Yeah, this hasn't come back after hours it disappeared.

And there is significant discussion on the Steam forums that it's so overwhelming that people won't be able to play anything before the trial is over.

Two ways to see that: The Steam servers are overloaded or there's a ton of people who want to try UT3.

yeah, the steam servers have to be incredibly overloaded. the steam forums are ablaze with anti-valve/steam statements. i hate to admit this, but i do kinda agree with them. i love valve/steam as much as the next guy, but they could have prepared a bit more for this.

but besides all that, i'm looking forward to hopping into this tho and to gib some fools with my rocket launcher.
I know the juvenile e-rabble need to gang up and neener-neener at anyone who dares state simple facts that there is a problem with the game for some players; trying desperately to parse and twist what people post into some uber-gotcha moment - e.g. the new driver alert - but that doesn't make it less annoying for those who have to suffer these fools who think that being jackholes is nobly "standing their ground on principle." (The only principals you have are the ones who gave you after-school detention, Bub.) The holier-than-thou one is you, WaterBoi.
See, it's this I'm talking about. I never threw punches but you're blatantly insulting after I said to back off being angry at some guy for trying to help you. It's this in your face attitude I can't stand with people and it seems to get multiplied in spades over the internet. Go take your attitude to Xbox Live, it's much more suited there.

Calm down. It's most likely you. I've played buggy games, and UT3 isn't one of them. Sacred was full of bugs. Hellgate London was full of bugs. Tribes2 was full of bugs. I've played UT3 on 3 PCs with vastly different hardware without issue. My friend also has it and has never had a problem.

It's most likely something to do with your system.
Nope, it was the GAME. :bomb:

It appears that after all the patching, the game may actually be playable. I just played for a couple of hours, retracing again the levels I'd nibbled thru over the past year before losing all progress. Other than a couple of scary temporary freezes and the dumbest menu loading lag this side of The Force Unleashed, it seems to be holding together better than it has. It's just too bad that I had to pay five times as much and waste countless hours to get to this point.

While the "fun factor" is subjective, the decision to Gears-ize the look was a mistake. Enemies blend into the environments and the cluttered and constricted maps feel like something you'd traverse in a story-driven game and aren't suited for fast and frenzied killfests. Oh, well. At least it appears to work now. Is anyone playing it or did they all shuffle over to TF2?
I heard back from Valve. Apparently when you're given the free pass, you can't activate a disk copy...
Hello,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

You will not be able to activate the Unreal Tournament 3 retail CD Key if you already have the free weekend subscription. You will be able to activate the key after the weekend.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

After I got that message, UT3 would actually download.

Oh Tribes 2. How I loved that game to death, despite all of its bugs. Its one of the few games I can remember buying it Day one and still being excited to play it, despite all of its problems. For those that don't know, Tribes 2 is free now, doesn't look too bad, and has jet packs.

I was having the issue telling me that I already had the game on my account. Oh well, I'll just install it later. Like everybody else has said, UT3 is decent, but it lacks the charm that UT99 and even UT2k4 (2k3 was kinda garbage though). I kind of attribute it to the gears of war effect.

Tribes one was far superior IMO

At least the game wasn't totally grey and brown, it maintained a bit of it's style but yeah, the Gearzing up of it was sad.
Project much? Mistake your reflection for someone else much? You have turned your inability to read and comprehend plain English into a jihad to impress us with your utter manliness, but instead are a childish fool. You made it personal and when I refused to scurry away from your bluster, you keep at it while hilariously protesting, "In your face? Moi?"

I wrote: It crashed every 10-20 mins. when it ran and then ceased to work at all on a system that runs everything else without a hitch. No amount of un/reinstalling, updating drivers, editing .INI files got it to run and browsing the Epic support forums showed I wasn't alone in having these problems.

Now, a mature person would've politely asked if the rig was up to spec. An intelligent person would've deduced from the comments about crawling support forums, updating drivers, editing INIs, etc. that the person complaining probably had a decent level of technical knowledge. Since you are neither, you blithely tossed off, "Sorry it didn't work, maybe your vid card is ancient"

At every turn, the snots in this thread reacted to my detailed complaints with simplistic retorts along the lines of, "It works for me, so your rig must suck and you don't know how to properly update drivers. The game is perfect (like me), so STFU or we're gonna insult you so more." Real helpful.

Even after I said that FINALLY it appears to have been patched into stability - only took them 15 months on a common configuration - the children can't just let it drop. Noooooooooooo, they need to stroke their egos and act as if anyone but them has a problem with manners. You top it off with more assumptions that because I've got a Gamercard in my sig, I'm just a console kiddie. HA!!! Keep beclowning yourself, Bub. That attitude's gonna get you beaten in a bar fight some day. Seriously, get the hell over yourself unless you have a good dental plan for what your attitude will bring you IRL. Buh-bye.

I bought KotOR 2 for my PC awhile ago, installed it, patched it, and it wouldn't run. I sent emails, made posts on forums, etc. Everyone told me that there was nothing wrong with the game. So I said screw it, uninstalled the game, and didn't patch it. It runs fine until patched.

Sometimes there's a freak reaction to a certain system configuration. It's not the game's fault or the user's fault really. It's just an example of incompatibility that will always exist when parts and software are all made by different companies.

Cool, I figure the servers got hammered and they want to get every person playing that they can. That seems like very good news the deal is sucessful.

steam should always think about pre-loading whenever there is a free weekend, both to increase awareness and prevent massive overloading

Another update to OP - they've just extended the 40% off deal until the 22nd to give those that are trying it this weekend a little more time to buy.

UT3 is so underrated. It's an amazing game, sure the single player story mode is not that enthralling, but the multiplayer is fantastic. One of the best values on pc besides the orange box ($10 at BB). The titan pack is great. Don't buy it on steam, buy it for $12.99 new at gamestop and then register it on steam (you'll have steam and disk-based access).

this is a smart move on Valve/Epic's part. There was a lot of hate being spewed towards both of them last week and they heard it and are trying to make amends. Also because they saw a 2000% increase in players since the Titan pack's release. So they'll want to try and cash in on that :)

I know, it's excellent to be playing with people :D

STEAM is so ridiculously awesome. Are there any other companies that offer so many free things, and when problems arise, offer MORE free things as compensation?
