Mass Effect - $9.99

Well, the timing is a little bad, but I've been waiting for this deal ever since the game was announced for Steam.

Hmmm... I've got a huge backlog right now. Should I pick it up now at $10 or wait until the X-mas sale and hope it goes down to $5 (much like Bioshock did last year?)? After picking up TF2 and Assassins Creed last week, I don't see myself playing it for a while anyway.

Amazing game for anyone who doesn't have it. I've beaten it 3 times on 360 and still bought it. Is anyone else having problems with steam though, I am getting really slow download times, I usually get 600kbs but I've only been getting about 100-150 the last 3 or 4 days.

I didn't like it too much when I first played it a long time ago, but I might as well try it again for $10. Thanks for the heads up OP!

Does any one know if there's some kind of additional DRM like install limits for the Steam version? I know retail version got some flak for its install limit, so I'm wondering if that transferred onto the Steam version.

So did they strip out whatever copy protection was on the disc version? I remember there was a huge hubbub about the PC release due to the activation process

i bought it cause of that very reason. no drm in steam versions of ea games. Like i said before, i love having a physical copy, but in the case, i prefer stream

Do your research before you buy it. This game has an issue with certain firewalls or virus protection. I have Kaspersky IS and when I try to run Mass Effect I either get sound issues or this ping alert sign from Kaspersky saying this game is keylogging. Steam or BioWare still have not released an update that fixes this issue.

Thanks OP. I already have the 360 version but was looking to try it on the PC as well. How convenient for this deal to come along. For $10, it's a great deal.

Hmm I'm tempted but I won't be able to play ME2 (I'm a PS3 owner), plus I'm pretty sure my comp may have trouble running ME1....

Cmon Bioware pack the 2 games up and release them on PS3! >.>;.

Not gonna happen. Microsoft is the publisher of the first game.

Beaten the 360 version at least 4 times and love it every time. I may just have to pick this up even though I own two copies for 360.

Like that stopped Ninja Gaiden 2 from being rebranded as Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2?

Will get this, i have the 360 version but FPS on it are just so .. wrong.. to bad 75% o the gmes released on it are FPS. I enjoyed the game right up till the city part... if that isnt a confusing cluster I dont know what is.. maybe with easier (for me) controls i can withstand the maze city.

For alot of people who are not sure if there rigs can run this game I suggest you check out this website.

www.canyourunit.com

Only one problem I had with it and that it does not recognize Windows 7 OS so this page is only good right now for people who are using Windows XP or Vista.

I imagine it depends on what Microsoft and EA worked out when they bought Bioware since obviously Microsoft had an exclusivity deal with Bioware for Mass Effect. I would guess either the Mass Effect series is going to stay a 360/PC exclusive or EA had to pay Microsoft a bunch of money and they can also release ME on the PS3.

Oh thank you for that!

I chuckled when it came up and said FAIL because my Video Card only has Pxel Shader and Vertex Shader 2.0 instead of 3.

Everything else was gravy though on XP...

A great game, and perfect timing with the sequel coming out in about 2 months (should be able to finish just about everything in the original in that timeframe!).

And yes, I'd recommend this even for people that have already played it on the Xbox 360. The PC version has vastly improved loading times, virtually no texture popup, and a much better interface (especially for using abilities and switching weapons). Plus the standard higher resolution support, a few fixed glitches here and there, etc, and it also includes Bring Down the Sky for free. For $10 it's definitely worth a playthrough.

I think this post, plus what I've searched... is probably making my decision on buying it...

I've glanced around and new copies aren't readily available for cheap...

plus with the DLC now... why not... Steam is my bitch afterall.

Downloading. Also been waiting for this sale forever. While half of my steam friends list is playing Dragon Age this weekend I'll be playing Mass Effect.

And next year I'll buy DA when it's half-price too. :applause:

Recommended: Windows XP / Vista / 7 You Have: Microsoft Windows 7 (Build 7600)

I love how it sees my overclocked i7 920:
CPU Speed Recommended: 2.6+ GHz Intel or 2.4+ GHz AMD You Have: 3.60 GHz Performance Rated at: 9 GHz :whee:

I'm afraid that if I jump on this, D2D will have it for $5 next week.

UPDATE: I bit. It's all deductible anyway.

Steam itself is a form of DRM.
Mild, yes - but it still requires you to have an account w/ them.

I wish they'd strip the Securom DRM check out of the retail box version.

Mass Effect PC is definitely worth $9.99, if you ask me.

blame your crappy internet security software, not the game. Get a decent hardware firewall and some internet sense and you can delete that garbage from your PC forever.

unless you're a l337 h4x0r, then of course you need to bloat your PC with so much useless anti-virus trash, software firewalls, and ping tracers, that your OS implodes.

Lovely. Resolution is capped at a maximum 1280x800 or 1280x1024 unless you manually edit the BioEngine.ini file. Next, I spent 15 minutes tweaking out my characters appearance, started the game, and during the shot of you walking thru the Normandy, the game crashed to desktop. Sigh. Start it again and...you guessed it...my character was totally lost. Have to start from scratch. WTF were all those save indicators for then?

I believe in the launcher utility (might have to start that from the Mass Effect folder), there's a settings option where you can set a higher resolution.

You make it sound like having a universal account for games you buy is a bad thing. This way if you have 2 pcs you just log in and download the games without worrying if you lose the cd key or anything.

In my opinion, DRM is acceptable if it actually offers benefits for the end-user. I don't think too many companies would be willing to allow unlimited downloads of paid content without any restrictions.
I'd get this, but I really have no time these days for long, single-player games

Hm. I went into options from the main menu and set 1440x900, my monitor's max, without any problem.

I thought this too at first, but if you look closely there are arrows pointing down at the lower right edge of the resolution selection menu drop down. I was able to select 1680*1050 no problem.

I'm not terribly excited but I always wanted to try it out. I would have been marginally happier with an even lower pricepoint but no point in complaining. I think this is the first time I've downloaded a 10 GB file... I pay for Verizon DSL so I'm only getting 3 Mbps down. It's going to take awhile.

I'm wondering if I can play this on minimum settings on my laptop. I don't mind playing with the options turned down since this is the only computer I have and I don't have a 360.

I have an Intel Core Duo @1.8ghz
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
2GB Ram
Win Xp

Anybody know if I will be able to run it? I can run Fallout 3 with virtually no slowdown.

Fantastic deal, if you haven't played it on the 360, I'd recommend grabbing this version instead. Runs/looks MUCH better. $10 is a steal

I bit. Had the 360 version and sold it, but I noticed a friend playing the PC version and I was blown away by the improvements. I couldn't resist at this price, thanks OP.
