strange error when attempting to upload avatar

Not sure how widespread this is but I got a strange error today when trying to change my avatar. Here's what it says:

I doubled checked and it can't have anything to do with file size (I tried with a 300 byte file to make sure). I've gotten that error with both Firefox 1.5.0.7 and Internet Explorer 6.
