John Woo's anticipated Stanglehold will be region locked on PS3, following the logic that, since the collector's edition comes with a movie (a cool, HD remastering of Hard Boiled) , it needs to be region locked. Okay, we're with you so far. So that means the standard edition, without any bundled movie, will be region free. Right? Midway? Sony? Anyone there??

No, the standard edition will be region locked as well. And while this is but one title in a quasi-special circumstance, the precedent is cause for alarm. Every step back to region distinctions empowers companies to falsely inflate their entertainment enterprises. And in a global marketplace filled with educated consumers, we know when things really aren't "new" (I can't even stand seeing games at E3 that have been in Japan for months).

Sitting on my porch in my rocker, watching region-restricted content whiz by...I don't like this situation one bit.

Because "Every step back to region distinctions empowers companies to falsely inflate their entertainment enterprises." Not that I really care since I doubt this game will sell that well or convince anybody else to do this.

It's probably just because of the movie.
They just said 'region lock the discs', without giving it a second thought.
 
I was skipping it anyways but okay.

This is potentially a step in the wrong direction. What happens when the next Firepro or King of Colosseum game comes out in Japan?!
 
I'm definitely not skipping this game. I could give two shits that it's not region free. I will however skip threads started by Zen Davis from now on.
 
Do PS3 games use the same regions as Blu-ray movies? If Japan starts clamping down and locking everything, at least US PS3 owners will still be able to import Japanese stuff since they're both in the same Blu-ray region.

Of course, that's only good news for the US.
 
my PS3 will play the game just fine. I will not be skipping it.

Pretty lame reason to region lock the game. The whole thing is sort of odd seeing that there are some Blu-Ray movie titles that are region-free.
 
I'm skipping it, but not cause of the OP... I just don't like shooting games =)

But seriously, I don't think this is THAT big a deal... I'm more concerned that PS2 games are still region locked! Release some firmware or something to make PS2 games not region locked so I can play JP PS2 games on my PS3!!!
 
They seem to be unwilling to rip out the region coding that they've so relied on (stupidly) for so long...

It happens, or it did up until now, that Japan and the US were in the same "region" so it was tantamount to being "region free" for the most part... But like others have said... Nintendo and Microsoft crave that stupid region coding (and the big "N" teased us with a region free Wii, but then recanted...)

I have the Criterion DVD of Hard Boiled, but I'd like to see it on Blu Ray... so, I'll probably get it... but it's not an endorsement of their region-coding stance, by any means. :)

Unless I'm mistaken (which I rarely am), Region A for Blu Ray covers US, Japan, and Europe... so yeah.

last i heard was that Hard Boiled will not be on BD, due to the Studio's "support" for HD-DVD... The game is the only way to get a BD copy of the movie at the moment.
 
Thanks for the advice I guess, but I really don't care. Call me selfish, but I want the game and movie. If I can play/watch it on my PS3 then I'm buying it.
