Strategy guides are as hot as video games (USATODAY.com)

With the level of quality going up in the guides, it's not that big a surprise... just look at the depth of Shin Megami Tensei or Phantom Braves guides. Thick and informative. Compared to the guides or yesteryear where they gave a million screenshots but no real info or the guide was destined to fall apart after even light use.

^^^ good point, i like the shape of the phantom brave guide..but errr..didnt help much in terms of gameplay:(..that makes me a sad panda

If I like the game then I'll buy the SG as a collectible.

The only value I see in most guides is if they have data included about the mech or aircraft. i.e. Mechwarrior or Ace Combat 5.

As far as strategy goes there are always free strategy guides/faqs online that are a lot better than most printed guides.

I've never used a strategy guide. Are they becoming like books or something? Anyway, most of you here probably don't need the actual info to pass games... or atleast I'd think so.

Phantom Brave - Bought that guide because I previously bought the La Pucelle and Disgaea guides. But this guide was much better in terms of depth and portability.
Shin Megami Tensei - Better than reading a FAQ online. I haven't played the game in weeks, but, when I do, I'll need it again.
GTA: SA- nuff said...

Right now im using a guide to go through Zelda WW. Im going on as far as i can, but i just dont have the time to screw around for half an hour looking for that right tree branch to shoot my hook up to.

If I was going to buy a guide, I'd buy it for the pics to make wallpapers, other media, etc. since all the info can be gotten online *cough* gamefucks *cough*. And I would wait till it's penny'd

I never buy guides for FPS or general action games. Since most of them are pretty straightfoward, I don't need a book to show me in pictures where to do. I always have the custom guides from GameFAQ if I ever get stuck. I do however tend to get the guide if it's a huge game like a GTA or Zelda: Wind Waker, and even some RPG's. I'd rather beat the game quickly and get the most from it rather then wasting hours finding stuff out on my own. Although I wish I had unlimited hours to play, I don't, so guides are a must for me sometimes.

I do agree the quality of most guides have really gone up from the past year or so.

Same here. If I need help with a game Ill just go to Gamefaqs and get the info I need for free.

I use strategy guides if the game is an rpg or just one with a reputation for having tons of secrets to find. Its weird that i now have the money to buy just about any game i want, but between work, shool, and real life, i don't have time to fiddlefuck around and find everything on my own.

I don't buy guides either. The only ones I have are ones I am given, or get through subscriptions and such.
