Okay, so I guess this falls squarely into the "Advice" as well as "Deal Request" category.
I currently find myself in the silly and amusement, yet irritating situation of living in a shared home with a fairly wealthy individual.
I, however, am typically dead broke. Remedying that with increased graphic design work ("oh, one of these..."), working a weekend gig,
and adding freelance food delivery, when the occasion strikes, lol. I'm sort of an artist in residence, and long story short, as a 20 year alumni,
I beseech the community, please brothers in christ, help me construct a super cheap, Franken-Switch, as the man has bought one Switch,
after I'd encouraged him to do so 7 years ago, and gone on a rampage. 200-300 games in 2 months time, brethren. Two. Months. Time.
When he'd reached 100+ in a couple weeks, he presumed I would start reviewing all of them for him, and his not having every game yet meant I'd briefly played and enjoyed Astral Chain, and then walked back to Animal Crossing, a delightful little game I had recalled from the days of the GameCube, when I'd first joined the ranks of cheap asses.
I had warned him ahead of time. I'm typically a casual gamer. Except when a game comes along that is like crack rock. Odd games in this category for myself personally, include Ninja Gaiden, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1-2, Epic Mickey, and plenty of more obvious others. When a game "clicks" something in my brain, there is no returning. I will lucid dream about it, and people around me will cringe when the theme music plays. This is the way.
So, as a result, he loves to hold the Switch over my head, and dagnabbit, he did BUY the thing, and I suppose that means he owns it.
So with my meager side hustles, I'm hoping to slowly set aside enough cash to make a very affordable Switch. Here are some items I was curious about, and some of the more nefarious sites I'm considering using to get them (jk, jk, they're pretty much, mostly, sorta legal).
SKIPPING, SKIPPING...
FIRST OFF... the cheapest "console only" Switch I have found in my earliest searches is in the neighborhood of $130, the Switch/screen-alone, on eBay.
First Question, w/ Follow-Ups: Should I even worry about modding the Switch? And if so, what's the best, sure fire way of knowing it's "moddable", why do so (I suppose is a good question), and how to easily do so? Second Question: Anyone know of a reputable source to get a Switch, no dock necessary, any cheaper (moddable or newer/unmoddable, I really don't care either way)?
If not... The next ideas are embarrassingly to taste. My eyes are becoming garbage (20 year veteran, brothers, 20 years), and I am seriously considering an Orion UpSwitch, 11.6" LCD monitor/case, for inserting your Switch into the back, and increasing the 7" screen to 11.6". These seem to cost $150 on eBay, at the cheapest. Fourth Question, w/ Follow-Ups: Are these worth getting? Anyone have experience with them and have an opinion? Anyone know anywhere that has them cheaper than $150?
And now for the infamous AliExpress. I would like to get little silly customizations, like silicon slip-ons for the JoyCons. Speaking of the JoyCons, AliExpress has some super cheap JoyCons, that apparently have 900+ positive reviews for. Uncertain, again, if anyone has any experience either way regarding using this site for some of these type of items. I've seen some that let you tighten/loosen the L and R sticks to taste, but I may not be able to deck out the uglier, bulkier black generic JoyCons... with adorable Animal Crossing silicone button grips and covers, lol.
To replace not having an actual Docking Station, I am considering a somewhat cheaper, and more space conscious, HDMI TV Dock Replacement Adapter with USB 3.0.
Plus, this allows me the ease to connect to any number of TVs in the house, including my own computer monitor.
Lastly before things get too saucy, what's the best and cheapest way to capture video for reviews and the like, off the Switch? I have a rather old Mac Mini, so I'm uncertain what's the best way to compile footage. I have an iPhone, however, and have heard some BlueTooth, Video export options exist for the 30sec clips one can create on the Switch, but one has to be holding the button while playing the game, in between scenes/cuts.
Now, going off the reservation and if this is a a no-no, I apologize and will remove/edit this portion, but has anyone used the Amiibo simulators? I already have a small collection started, and will continue to collect the physical paraphernalia, but there's just something amusing to me about a giant, colorful, Animal Crossing decked out, more portable than portable, but with an AV Out via the Dock Replacement. Any duds in this concept, and any ideas for making it more redunkulous for under a budget?
Anyone still with me, I am so, so sorry. But thank you, especially if you manage to reply. Thanks gang!
