Stupid PS2 wong play PS1 games?

My brothers trying to play FF7 and FF8 on his fat PS2, however it doesn't seem to be reading it. I've tried changing the speed of the PS2, but to no avail.

All it does is spin the disc and get you to the PS2's menu. (Just like the problem with Marvel v.s. Capcom 2)

Do I need to do the scotch-tape trick? Or is he just royally screwed?
 
laser needs to be cleaned, if your ps2 cannot read all for types of compatible discs (ps2 dvd ps2 cd ps1 cd and dvd video) the laser is faulty, a quick cleaning should do the trick
