Title says it all. Any suggestions for this type of game? If not like Sim City, maybe like recent Civilization games within a space environment?

Give Galactic Civilizations a try, it's a 4x turn based space game.

Just be forewarned, the economy is crazy in depth, but once you wrap your head around it it's not too bad.

If you want a RTS 4X, Sins of a Solar Empire was quite good.

Master of Orion 2 was phenomenal, but I didn't get to play 1 first. Make sure to take Creativity on every custom race you make, it's so broken that it's basically a requirement.

Stay the hell away from MOO3, it's terrible.

when you get good, creativity stunts you

in the end, production is what wins the game (well, wins the game easier, since the game is pretty easy anyway) so anything that lets you have more population or more production will bust the game open
