I think the issue of whether our troops have sufficient equipment to do their job just hit a whole new low:

Marine Pfc. Jeremy Tod called home with news that his superiors were urging him and fellow Marines to buy special military equipment, including flak jackets with armor plating, to enhance the prospects of their survival. advertisement
The message was that such purchases were to be made by Marines with their own money.
"He said they strongly suggested he get this equipment because when they get to Iraq they will wish they had," Tod said.

Yes, that's right. Our military's new strategy for equipping our troops is - telling them to call dad and ask for money. I can't wait until they start sending soldiers door-to-door selling wrapping paper and candy bars.

In other news, the Marine Corps' inspector general tells congress that the Marines in Iraq are rather badly underequipped.
 
Are you saying that "supporting the troops" means more than just buying a cheap, chinese-made ribbon magnet for your car??
 
That's why we should draft Bush supporters... I mean, the rich because their families will have more money to spend on the equipment the soldiers should have had in the first place. Where exactly is Halliburton squandering all this money? Did we ever find that $9 billion floating around in the desert?
 
This is depressing....Now maybe the righties will get why we are pissed at the likes of Halliburton. They are getting paid handsomely while our guys are getting the shaft.

yep. The articles printed in the newspaper or online are always more true than the accounts of the people who were in Iraq
 
that's an interesting article, especially the part about the dad still supporting his son even while being against the war. Also the comment about the congressman being unaware of, nor having ever heard of, army personnel being told to ask home for supplies. I would be very surprised if the army's solution to an enlistment problem was to have soldiers also paying for extra gear. More information is definitely needed on this,

Historically, it can be difficult to balance the right amount with the right needs, being bogged down with too much stuff vs knowing what is essential. When I was visiting the WW2 museum in Orleans, it was enlightening to see how much stuff the american soldier was supplied with vs his german counterpart.
