PC version has activation, and the Xbox version has...an Xbox controller. Sooooooo nice job Square

Calling Steam Activation?
It's far easier to settle with than say SecureRom or anything worse....
And I wouldn't call Steam anything negative.
Honestly for the non-RTS fan I'd say go with Starcraft, since virtually everyone loves it, even if you don't love other RTS.
But between those two, the first one doesn't have activation, costs less, and made a bigger splash when it came out (which may or may not mean it's actually better, although one review I read said it was).
So I guess I'd say go with the first one, and if you love it get the second (if you're willing to put up with activation or an Xbox pad). I just bought the first one this year, but...it's in the backlog.
EDIT: One interesting thing about the first Supreme Commander-it was one of the first games that kind of needed 64-bit Windows 'cause of RAM usage, and of course is really demanding on CPUs. By the time I get to it, I'll hopefully have at least a quad, although I'm sure my dual core will run it.
Starcraft is OLD.
If you really want to, go with W3 or the original TA which is SupCom's great grandmother.
SupCom's ability to weild 2+ screens is the glory which other games could/should cater to.
I love looking at a large overview map on my 23" when I am also playing the game zoomed in on another 23".
This is an excellent buy. the first one is a steal on the PC, and the FA exp is the herald of the seires.
SupCom2 is more of the beginner RTSer.... and it shows.... if you like tacticle stategy RTS, get the first + exp.
