Judging by the TV spots, they are indeed capitalizing on Juno's success. Actually, the screening I saw had the director present, and he said that it was supposed to be released last August, but he demanded they postpone the release date, as it was competing against some big summer blockbusters and he felt this was a word-of-mouth movie that needed some time to breathe and find an audience.
It really was not that great a film, and I'd say it's because of a lazy and completely unbelievable script with completely unbelievable performances. It's at best, a rental.
QFT. Everyone I saw it with declared it lame. At best, it's an homage to the precocious high-schooler genre that really hit its peak in the 80s, but I don't even give the filmmakers that much credit. It wanted to be Ferris Bueller, but it really just played like a bad after school special crossed with an episode of Doogie Howser. The kid who played the lead was annoying as hell and Robert Downey Jr. and Paige Davis were completely wasted.
Last night, Michael Clayton: 8/10
Taut, taut legal thriller. Great performances by every single person in the cast, but most especially Clooney. He's so great at playing in-the-know, in-control characters, but in this movie you see him operating without critical knowledge and essentially without control of the situation for most of the movie, and it is his struggle to make sense of things and act accordingly that makes the film so compelling. Great flick.
