It's been some time since I've posted in this thread on my goings about with film, so here it goes:
Repo! The Genetic Opera - I loved every moment of it. It's a bit pretentious, and goes on for a bit, but it's a wild ride. Just go in and shut off the logical parts of your brain (brain in general), since there are some definite plot holes/plot inconsistancies/shit that doesn't make sense when you think about it. Sarah Brightman was fantastic as Blind Mags, and even Paris Hilton was great. This is basically a modern day Rocky Horror and everyone should go and see it if they get the chance. Everyone came dressed as characters from the movie (except for me and a lady friend) and there was singing in the aisles. It was pretty crazy. I think Sneaky would definitely dig the movie.
Milk - I was hoping to like this one more than I actually did. It actually kind of sucks. The acting from Sean Penn was phenomenal, as is generally expected, but the direction wasn't all there. Penn definitely pulls off an amazing gay man, and especially the character of Harvey Milk. I liked certain aspects of the film, such as the interspersing actual documentary film footage in (reminded me of French New Wave ala Truffuat (sp), but for much of the first quarter/half the film seems to linger as a softcore gay porn film. I understand why Gus Van Sant put in so much gay imagery into the film, but the actual sex scenes were hardly necessary and definitely seemed gratuitous. One scene you'll notice is the one where they are rejoicing after Milk wins the supervisor position and they are celebrating, only for the director to cut away to two gay men giving each other a blow job. Absolutely unnecessary in the context of the film and what it was trying portray. In general, it seemed that the director seemed to be bringing to light every gay stereotype that there is, rather than trying break those common misconceptions. I did enjoy the director's attempt to try to show the parallels between Harvey Milk and Barack Obama. The fact that it was a period piece of recent era was also quite fascinating and illuminating.
Milk is definitely one of those films that seems to definitely know its audience. I was on a date, but be prepared to be sitting in a movie theatre with tons of gay guys who know the plot like the back of their hand. Kind of weird, and I guess it doesn't make for a date movie really, but eh, it wasn't exactly my choice.
