I agree that it wasn't as good as Casino Royale. It felt like a transition to the final act. Dominic Greene was far from a memorable Bond villain.

That's true. I think my favorite Brosnan Bond villain is, hmm, perhaps Alec Trevelyan. Then again, it could just be my love for Sean Bean clouding my judgment. :whistle2:k

Just watched Operation Scorpio. Lau Kar Leung, Chin Kar Lok, and Yuen Jung. A little much wire work for my tastes, but still has some decent kung fu action. Worth seeing for "Eel style" kung fu.

Milk

Someone was complaining earlier that there was a gratuitous amount of gay sex in this film that somehow undermined its message, but I didn't come away with that impression at all. The amount of sex was pretty minimal, actually, and what was there was discrete, unless you consider two men conversing in bed and kissing occasionally to be deeply offensive to your sensibilities. I read an interesting article a couple weeks ago that posited that straight audiences were more comfortable with the gay sex scenes in Brokeback Mountain because the characters themselves were ashamed afterward. Maybe that's true. I don't know. But I wasn't bothered or distracted by what I saw here.

Anyway, I found the movie very well done and very moving. Penn is great, of course, but it's really the windfall of supporting roles that surprise. James Franco and Emile Hirsch in particular do some of their best work. Josh Brolin also manages to give some depth and sympathy to an individual for whom you expect to feel little.

Also, Anita Bryant is an orange juice-swilling cunt.
 
Just saw Death Race I didn't think it was to bad. I'm talking about the new one and I heard that when it was in theaters it did not get that good of reviews. I remember reading about Frankenstine. I thought they would show him at the end but they never did. They just killed him in the first 10 minutes or so. So was he different in the first one?
 
7 pounds, sure its sad but just felt way too forced and you can guess what the twist is at about five minutes in. Just not as good as I thought it would be.
 
Gran Torino. "Get off my lawn." Clint Eastwood can still deliver lines and perform. He still makes you believe his performance.
 
Drillbit Taylor - Finally. Thank you free rentals from Redbox! In truth, I actually loved it. One of the better, and probably underrated Apatow films, that I've seen. Definitely better than that shit flick that was Pineapple Express.

Never Back Down - I enjoyed it far more than I was expecting to. It actually made me want to go out and punch some shit up, which I did by going to the gym. Also a free redbox rental

Sukiyaki Western Django - Wow, this was pretty crappy. I was expecting so much more from Miike. Some good parts, but way, way too choppy of a film. The accents just get to be way too fucking annoying too. I'm glad I didn't purchase this film on a whim and got it through a free rental at Redbox.

The 400 Blows - I love the poor man's HBO, TCM. Remarkable film. I can't believe I hadn't seen it up until now. I starting to be come a big fan of Trufeaut (sp) after seeing Jules and Jim. He's probably my second favorite French New Wave director after Godard. Now I have to find the rest of the Antoine Doinel series somehow.

I saw another film recently, but for some reason its name keeps escaping me. I can see pictured in my mind, but it just isn't coming out.

Now I'm looking forward to a midnight screening of The Spirit and then Valkyrie (a friend hyped it up to me). Also hoping to catch Gran Torino and Benjamin Button before I head back to school.
 
Death Race - About what I expected. Not a good movie, but it had cars going really fast and blowing up.

Chocolate - Entertaining, but it's obvious Jeeja is not at Tony Jaa's level yet. The cuts were rarely more than 2 or 3 moves, and there seemed to be more image enhancement than other Pracha Pinkaew movies. Still, her potential is obvious.
 
Magnificent Warriors - An early Michele Yeoh actioner that is surprisingly pretty good. She kicks some major ass with a rope dart. Kind of a female Indiana Jones set in the Japanese occupation of China. With kung fu.

The Orphanage - Really liked this one. The last couple minutes were extraneous and hurt the film, imo, but overall it's a really solid pseudo-horror film.

Slumdog Millionaire. A bunch of my friends wanted to see an artsy movie and after all the pub it got on CNN, they were convinced it was worth watching. Surprisingly, after seeing it, I have to agree that it was a very good film.
 
The Day the Earth Stood Still-Did not like it at all.
There was hardly any transition from Reeve's character setting the plans to destroy the planet to saving it.

Step Brothers- Dumb as hell, but I enjoyed it. One of those turn your brain off and just have a good time movies.
 
Hancock- Not bad, better than I was expecting.

Wall-E- very good like all Pixar films. The Incredibles is still my favorite (haven't seen Cars or Ratatouille yet).
 
I re-watched City of God for the first time in years. It's still as jarring, merciless, and magnificent as when I last watched it.
 
Saw Quantum of Solace in the theater last night using one of the passes I got when I bought the Bond blu's. I don't understand all the hate the movie got. It really wasn't that bad. Not as good as Casino Royale, but still good.
