Take a Big Whiff -- Get a Big Prize: The Earthbound Contest

I was looking through my Earthbound Player's Guide and rediscovered the scratch-and-sniff cards in the back. One of the cards says "Take a Big Whiff. Get a Big Prize." You have to guess what the scent is, write your guess on the back and send it in to Nintendo of America.

Now, when I was younger, and when I had a different copy of Earthbound and a different Player's Guide, I took a guess and sent it in. I guessed it was "Season Salt"... but smelling it now, I realize it's clearly damn garlic. Now I hang my head in shame.

Regardless, it doesn't say anywhere what the prize was. Does anyone have any clue what it was?

Yeah.

The monkey's banana smells great though.*

* Obtuse sexual innuendo intentional.

It was announced in Nintendo Power what it was, and what the prize was but....I'll be goddamned if I can remember what it was. That game sure was sweet though.

LMAO, and the funny part about the stinky scratch & sniff stickers was that when people saw that Earthbound had a large box, they rememberd the scratch & sniff ads and figured that the box had a special adapter that shot smells into the room. Seriously. The Earthbound Smell-O-Vision. It's one of those Urban Legends of video games that is true. Nintendo has since admited that it was not their finest marketing campaign.

I love Earthbound. I want those scratch-n-sniff things. I remember that when it first came out. Blockbuster gave me a strategy guide when I rented it. Earthbound, to this day, remains one of my most favorite games ever.

That air freshener is pretty awesome.
