Taking Games Back with No Receipt?

So I got some games and DVDs for Christmas that I already had, but the folks giving them to me didn't have the receipts. Will Best Buy take stuff back without receipts? Target? EB?

Everything is unopened, I just didn't know what different store policies were...

Wrong forum but you'll probably just have to go instore and ask. They'll most likely give you store credit though at some places it might be better for you to do an exchange since some stores have a restocking fee.

I asked this same question at CC and BB last night. BB said no problem just bring it in for instore credit or exchange.

CC said you need to know the original buyers credit card # or their phone number, so they can track the recipt in their system.

I don't know why BB acted like it was no big deal. It has to be more complicated than that to combat sale prices. Like buying it on week at BB for 20 on sale, then bringing it back and trying to get full price instore credit. I got some games to return w/o receipts, so I'll let you know how it goes.
 
BB will give you store credit for the lowest price on it within the last 30 days or something like that. This combats sale prices.
 
I think a lot of stores kind of relax their return policies around the holidays. It makes sense, as the huge post-Christmas exhchange frenzy gets a ton of people into the store.

But to be safe you should at least ask your relatives what stores they got the gifts from. I'm not sure how it works but I know some stores can scan items and like call a number to confirm if the item was purchased at their store, at which point they'll give you store credit without a problem.

We actually did quite well at Best Buy, save for the fact that they had next to NOTHING in stock. I wanted to pick up Dodgeball, but there was not a single copy to be found. The only disc they didn't take back was Office Space (full screen), which I just wanted to trade for a Widescreen version. 8(

Still, I am happy that everything else got traded in just fine.

i tried to bring back a duplicate unopened paper mario to Wal-Mart yesterday. They will only exchange. No refund whether you have the receipt or not..

totally sucks, but I guess I'll trade it for Donkey Konga..

The problem with that is some people don't want their relatives to know they're returning it for fear of hurting feelings. This is my situation. I got a couple DVDs full screen and I just want to trade them for the Widescreen versions. No reason to ask, I'll just take them back to Walmart and hope they exchange them, should be easy as pie. Mmmmm..... pie gotta go.
 
True, you may not want your relatives to catch on. Well the store ID thing might work regardless of where you get it scanned. Once I tried to get store credit at a KayBee for a GBA. But they scanned it and called a number, and told me it was purchased at a Circuit City. So you may not even need to ask your relatives anything for this to work.
 
I believe that the only time that a person can tell if an item was purchased at their store is if it has a serial number. Most systems have a serial number and can easily be tracked. Most games, whoever, can not.

Best Buy are usually dicks about it and won't do it
Media Play are pushovers and will
Target will also
Walmart will but they will scan your ID and yiou can only do it 3 times

A while ago, in my pre-CAG days, I got away with a store credit exchange that I had no business getting away with... I saw a CD that I already had at Best Buy, packaged with a new bonus disc. So I bought the CD and took the bonus disc, which had its own sleeve. I then went to Sam Goody (same as Media Play basically) and returned the main CD (still individually wrapped) for $17.99 in store credit. The cashier gave me no trouble at all.

Yea, last year I bought 2 sealed start trek box sets for about $50.00 total from some guy on the street. I took them into media play and got a brand new xbox and live account. it was pretty sweet. I just told them I got them for christmas and didn't want them.
 
Well Cirucuit City gave me store credit on a game with the sticker still on it without receipt. They tried to look me up by the phone number of who bought it. It wasn't in their system. Then they asked me if I knew their Credit Card number...yeah right.

He hum hawwed around. Got his manager to punch a few buttons, then they looked at each other like 1st graders doing calculus...at this point they seemed to give up tracking me in their big brother system and handed me the store credit card. I was expecting a much smoother transaction given the time of year.
 
Best Buy here is being very strict:
Full refund with receipt
Store credit with gift receipt
No return or exchange at all without either type of receipt
