Almost slipped by me completely... IGN scored it a 7.5, seems kind of low, but his faults seem to be things I would love.

http://gameboy.ign.com/articles/692/692370p1.html

He faults it on the game being very hard and old school... those things are great for me, I don't like blowing through a game so fast. He says the controls are kind of clunky... I guess I can manage through them.

The reviewer says the story and characters are excellent, and that a ton of extra side quests and things like cooking and titles were added.

$24.99 after a GGC at Best Buy? I think I'm sold!

Just need to make sure to hold onto that receipt in case it goes cheaper. I've been playing my handhelds a ton lately, and I love old school RPG's, this one is a definite buy.

EDIT: Apparently there wont be a guide for the game? Good job, Nintendo, this is one guide I'd probably actually buy for full price.

I remember playing the dejap ROM about 2 years back and it was pretty good. It does take a long time and can be difficult, but that's until you master a few moves and stick everyone on "use TP" so they keep wailing on people and summoning badass elementals. My only problems with this new version are:

1. No dejap translation makes me sad.
2. I don't think I can sit through it again. I still have to finish Tales of Symphonia...and Destiny...and Destiny 2 and about 20 other RPGs.

I say if you like them old school, this is the way to go. Also, it looked fucking hot on the SNES.

Nintendo usually does a great translation, so I'm not worried about that... they are publishing it, they'd be in charge of translating it right?

It might be worth sitting through it again, according to that IGN review they added a whole boatload of added things, and even added new artwork to the game.

How many hours is the game, about? 20? 30?

After releasing this game all the characters from Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2 will appear in a game that has a US release. Would be nice if someone release that.

I'd say about 30 give or take. I remember it taking me a few weeks playing pretty intently at certain points. Since it's a Namco game, I thought Namco would be in charge of the translation?

I really, really hate playing RPG's on handhelds. Even good ones. However I'd really like to play this game.

Just a bit OT but do you think the Revolution will have an adapter to play DS games? Seems to me with the input methods we've seen announced it would be possible to make a DS adapter like the GBA device for the Cube.

I was wondering when someone would start a Tales of Phantasia thread. I was beginning to think I was the only person wanting this game.

So far, the only Tales game I have played (almost done anyway) is Eternia (Destiny II in U.S.).

Do all Tales games have this real time hack and slash battle system?
Why would I even bother cooking anything? It seems like a waste.
Is there some secret to mastering the battle system? A lot of the time I fee like I am just hacking and slashing.

I do like the game though. It is not super great, but it has its moments and those moments keep me going and craving more. I look forward to trying out Phantasia. I would have really liked a guide for Eternia to better understand all the cooking, craymels, and moves in battle. Assuming Phantasia is similar, a guide would have been nice. Hopefully the GameFAQ will be finished before I start the game this time.

You will probably love Tales of Symphonia. I put 200 hours into that thing over just about two playthroughs. I had to use GameFAQs to get through all of that one (not to finish it, but to unlock everything). It'd be near impossible without a walkthrough of some kind.

Nintendo translating this means that anything risque or alcohol-related has been removed. I'm probably going to pass on this one unless I can get it a bit cheaper.

I beat ToS with like 40 something hours, 200 hours is pretty overkill :whistle2:x

I loved ToP and really wanted it to come to america so ill be picking this up

If you unlocked everything in 40 hours, that impresses me greatly. I probably could have finished it in about 50 or 60 hours, but I had a lot of time on my hands in the winter of 2004.

Then using your score from previous playthroughs you can change the game the next time (more or less experience, other things to make it easier or harder).

My total game time may actually have been in the 100-150 hour range, I'd have to load up the game again to check. It's one of those I plan on replaying once I beat my other 100 games.

But anyway, ToP is preordered at GR and will be in my hands this evening.

Apparently Namco passed on it, because Nintendo is the publisher for it... same with all the Final Fantasy games that have come out here for GBA. Not sure why Nintendo publishes all these RPG's, yet can't bring out Earthbound 1 + 2 :(

Bestbuy.com says it's in stock on the website, yet all the stores show unavailable... it might have just come in today, so hopefully it will be there. $25 is alot, but I'm a sucker for old SNES RPG's, espically ones that never made it here.

If only SquareEnix would release Dragon Quest 5, or Star Ocean 1 on the GBA... I don't need more Final Fantasy ports, thanks.

Looks like you've been proven wrong... from Planet Gamecube's review:

If you are wondering why this game is rated Everyone 10+ and not just Everyone, it becomes obvious as soon as Arche, the frisky spell caster, joins the party. In a very short amount of time, she convinces a captain to sail the group across dangerous waters by claiming she will make it “worth his while", and then she has an implied sex dream about Cress, the main character. In all honesty, I’m surprised the game isn’t rated Teen. The game isn’t short on death and sorrow, either. Towns and families are exterminated. Some characters are motivated by vengeance alone. Don’t let the eight legged Pegasus with the cheerful kids riding it fool you. The story is heavy and may be over the head of many younger gamers

Nintendo can kiss my ass for using that horrible cover, too.

Got mine at Best Buy around noon today. Had received only 6 copies.

GGC is still my friend. :)

Thanks a ton, I'll head there now, rather then deal with them over the phone.

Picking up on Monday using 10% off coupon at Best Buy since Gamestop and EB are charging $34.99. What's with the different prices?
just got my reward zone coupon. Can i combin that with GGC?
Yea, the RZ cert is a form of payment, and not a coupon. Just to be sure, hand them the RZ certificate after they've already given you a total.

My Best Buy didn't have it... nobody in the district did. Sucks, because now I have to squeeze in time to go down there and get it at a later date.

Picked up my preorder today at GR. I can probably get the second copy they had tomorrow for free if I want to commit fraud, but I'll probably be a nice guy. I'll share the full obnoxious story in the GR thread.

You know, Gamerush is a haven for jerks...so, maybe you should just send that copy my way ;).
Damn... still on the fence about this one... anybody care to push me to one side?
An old school SNES RPG, lots of added features (new artwork, new side quests, cooking, titles), supposedly a high difficulty, all the reviews are saying it has an amazing storyline and characters.

$24.99 from Best Buy, this sounds like a good old school RPG experience. I wish I was playing it now :(

EDIT: Damn it, I knew it, the district just got the shipment a day late, because NOW it shows up as available at all the stores here... I have to find time to go BACK to Best Buy sometime in the afternoon when the game will actually be there. Arg!!

Alright Roufuss, that'll work for me. But yeah, I fucking hate the box art. Whoever thought that'd be a good idea should be shot because I'll be embarassed to merely buy the game.

Its got a very old school look and feel... the voice acting is laughably hilarious, I'd rank it right up there with Star Ocean 2.

So far I'm really digging the story, the characters, and the battle system.

The translation so far, is very good... I just wish they'd say hell instead of heck =/

It is only $29.99 at Best Buy without discounts. Well less than $1 per hour of gameplay. Use a Gamer Gift Card or the 10% off coupon and it can be had for even less. You said you are enjoying Tales of Eternia, so why stop there?

Considering not to buy the game based off the box art is the lamest excuse I have ever heard of. You should be more ambarrassed that you are ambarrassed about buying the game because of the box art. The Tales of Eternia box art is worse in my opinion.

Lol, I wouldn't actually avoid a game because of box art... TOE's box was ghastly, but I've had to buy much worse.... this anime series, Elfen Lied, had the most blatant covers you could imagine... it was actually kinda fun watching the cashiers' reactions. I actually think I will buy Phantasia though because my memory stick fucked up so I lost my TOE save... gotta have something to make me feel better.

Damn! That blows chunks!

How far were you? I am on the verge of beating it right now (at final boss), but I'm wasting time on my computer posting in this (lame) forum.

Well I was like 5 hours in... I was at the desert town about to go and get the 3rd Craymel... so it wasn't that huge of a loss, but enough to piss me off...

I really do have a problem with wasting time on the computer though... I'd finish so many more games if I didn't have the damn internet to steal my time.

I really, really dislike the Tales series.

And yes, I've played Phantasia before (emulation, fool).

And yes, I hated that one, too.
Am I the only one that likes the box art? No Fujishima fans around here?
I actually didn't see a big deal about the box art. I mean, it was artwork that represented the game. Is it because it's "girly" or something? Have you guys seen the boxart of most GBA games? I think FF1&2 only had the logo on a pretty plain background.

I would think most people trash those GBA boxes soon after they're opened anyway...
