i found dawn of war for pc at target for 13 bucks, but when i tried to buy it the lady said i had to be 18?? is this some new policy or something or did i get screwed....i told her i thought it was 17 but she kept insisting it was 18

Mature rated games are for gamers 17 and older. If you are seventeen, you should've been able to purchase the game. Next time, show them the back of the box, and at the bottom where the ESRB rating is, it will say: Mature (17+)

Target could very well have instituted a policy requiring you to be 18 years old, and they are well within their rights to do so.

At Target (and best buy I think) its in their computer. A screen pops up and says..."Make sure the person is born before this date." If you aren't born before that they won't sell it to you, I dont think showing them the box will help at all.

Come now, you cant expect some target cashier monkey to do actual math, can you?

That was my thought. Either that or the worker just assumed it's 18 as that's the age you can vote/buy cigs/etc.

That is possible, seeing as I was carded for condoms at one point in my former teenage life by some rather unintelligent gas station attendant.

Personally, I'd prefer to see a mandatory buying age for M rated games. Barring any discussion about whether kids need to engage in mature themes like sexual situations, rampant nudity or barbaric violence. Such a policy would really cause a severe nipping in the bud of any complaining about the violence of video games.. if such games are restricted along the same lines as movies, it becomes very difficult for anyone to complain about content.

It doesn't matter if the box says "17+". The laws in most states regarding violent video game sales use 18 as the magic number.

agreed. well spoken.

I agree, it's still believed that video games are intended solely intended for children, despite the fact that the average age of a gamer is 27. I doubt politicians ranting against games will ever cease, unfortunately.

That sucks. I'm glad that my local GS, GR, BB, and Target don't check me on ANYthing that I have bought from them EVER. I preordered GTA:SA for PS2 back when I was 13, (now 15) and had no problem doing so.
