ok so i went to hr block and talked a very nice lady about what forms to fill.

she said because i live in jersey and i work in new york i will need to fill out the

NY IT 203

and

NJ 1040

she tried not to give out to much information because she wanted my money. so i wanted to just verify with you guys and see if this is correct or if i'm missing somehting. also where can i get the form for deductions such as student loans, etc?

any help would be great.

also any good websites to file these taxes?

i don't know about exactly the name of the forms you need to fill out but i can tell you how it worked for me... I was a resident of MN but I worked and lived in MD ... MD taxed my income at well lets say 200$ to make this easy.... I had to fill out forms with MN stating what i made in MD and what I payed in... I then had to calculate what minnesota would have charged me in taxes if I had made that ammount in minnesota... minnesota taxed that amount of income at 225$ I got to diduct what i payed to maryland from them minnesota taxes and then i had to send minnesota a copy of my maryland tax return a special tax form (i think it was called an M1NR) and a 25$ check.... i did this for 3 years that i worked in this kind of a situation never had a problem

as a side note one of the years i had to mail in a fing 1$ check, yes 1$... i believe it cost them more to process my tax return than they got on that one.

also your states should have a number you can call to ask the IRS these questions, much easier that way... also when dealing with dual states i've found you can't file online most of the time (at least in one of the states... i could always file online for MD but i had to do MN on paper).

How much would I get if I earned around 11,000 and don't have any dependent?A classmate said he worked for 6 months and got $700.I think I put for them to take 25% off my check.

hum on retrospect i could have made that all one post, but oh well.[/QUOTE]

awesome! i'm gonna give them a call and find out. i might just find a real accountant. hope it's not to expensive

If you have a pretty straight forward situation you should be able to do your taxes using Turbotax, Taxcut, etc.

The dual state thing might complicate things, but I'd bet there are other people where you work that commute from NJ. Ask a few of them that have been filing taxes at least the past few years.

I mean you can pay an accountant, but if you get a W2 and have a few deductions that also gave you a form with the number it's all pretty straight forward.

Can we make this an official "Tax Question" thread, Wubb? I have some questions and I wouldn't want to make another thread... nor would I want to ask some questions & hijack the OP's thread

My mom used to do taxes, and that sounds right. Essentially what's going to happen is you're going to get a refund from one state--because you don't live there, but you work there--and you'll turn around and take that refund (if you file early enough) to pay the state you live in but haven't worked in. So you're filing state forms in BOTH states. It won't have any bearing on your federal return.

Turbotax and the like will help you fill out one state form, but I think you have to pay another $15ish to download an extra state.
