teh Cubs got NOMAR!!!!

MOTHER fuckER! hes my fav goddamn player!! im from maine so the red socks are somewhat of a home team and now THEY fuckING SUCK

I'm so dissapointed right now, I'm lost for words. fuck you Red Sox. This trade made no sense for the Sox to downgrade and throw away their best prospect.

Wait, shouldn't you Red Sox fans somehow blame this on Steinbrenner? Every stupid thing the BoSox do is his fault, isn't it?

I still hate the Yankees, but I am glad that Texas traded A-Rod to them. Texas has become a contender is a full year ahead of schedule of where they are supposed to be.

Baseball is nearly unwatchable nowadays because of Steinbrenner...
And if you don't believe me, look at the ascension the NFL has made in the past 5 years...

Hey the Sox did get Orlando Cabrera and Doug Mientkiewicz back, which isn't bad. I'm really glad the Cubbies got Nomar, they needed some hitting, and they didn't give much up either. Great deal for the Cubs, doesn't really make a difference for the Twins, the Expos didn't lose much either, but I'm not sure the Red Sox got all they could have for Nomar.

The Sox needed a first baseman who could actually field the damn ball.
Defense is the Sox's biggest problem, and this trade definitely helps them out. Also, Nomar was up for free agency at the end of this year and there was almost no chance he would have resigned. Sad to see Nomar go, but at least we got something out of it.

Lots of Yankee/Steinbrenner haters here. I guess you guys just don't deal well with WINNERS!

I think regardless of what Steinbrenner does, Torre has the winning recipe.

I was born a yankee fan, raised a yankee fan and will die a yankee fan.

Hate is such an ugly word.

Now there are two Alex Gonzalez's in the NL East. :D I think this will help the Cubs get the Wildcard, at least. I still think they're too far out to win the Central division.

It's not unwatchable because of Steinbrenner, it's unwatchable because the Player's Union is out of control. A true salary cap would solve the problem of cheap ass owners. Don't blame Steinbrenner because he has the balls to spend truckloads of money to give his fans the best product possible.

The ascention of the NFL is because it is the best-run sport in the country. Efficient salary cap, NO GUARANTEED CONTRACTS (if you suck and don't make the roster, you don't make money). NFL players still make truckloads of cash, but parity is achievable because a team is restricted in how much money it can spend per year. None of this BS that makes teams that spend over a certain amount "share the wealth" with other teams. Yeah, that's definitely working, MLB.

I'm a little disappointed at what we got back, but I'm glad its over. Cubs fans I think have high expectations for him, but his achilles is still bothering him... He really hasn't been the same player since he hurt his wrist. He's not the same guy that was once chasing .400. He plays the game right though and plays hard every game.

And him swinging at the first pitch every single god damn time gets a little old. And Nomar booting ground balls in key situations. And throwing the ball away... Hell, we only needed a defensive 1st baseman because of Nomar's throws.

He's spent almost 200 million on this team, and I wouldn't say its the best product available. Their bullpen has exactly 3 pitchers, and their rotation has had the likes of Jon Lieber, Tanyan Sturtze, Brad Halsey, Jose Contreras (who they just traded for Esteban Loaiza... How did they pull that off? Oh yeah, they gave them a truckload of money). Their offense has certainly been the best in the league though, but thats all.

The league's salary problem has been improving lately, due to the market correction. My problem isn't with Steinbrenner using his money to sign any and all free agents out there, its not like he's paying them double what another team would. My problem is with him trading cash to other teams for players because he has no prospects left in the minors.

I realize that Baseball needs to implement some sort of salary cap in order to keep the playing field more competitive, However you can't fault Steinbrenner for putting a quality product for the fans because he can afford it. When The Yankees play away they sell out almost every game which means more profits for the home team they play against. In the long run other teams enjoy hosting the Yankees because they have so many fans (that either love them or hate them) and that means a full house.
Nomar was not about to sign with the Red Sox after the fiasco with A-rod where Nomar was going to be tossed to the side in favor of A-rod. Red Sox fans can blame management for his departure but did a good job of landing Cabrera. He is not a household name but he is more than adequate. Look at their stats, this is an average for the past 3 years...

Player Compare 3 Year Averages MLB Standard Stats
Player AB R H HR RBI BB SB BA OBP SLG
Cabrera, Orlando SS MON 605 74 169 13 77 48 23 0.2793 0.3308 0.4264
Garciaparra, Nomar SS BOS 459 78 140 19 78 29 8 0.3050 0.3493 0.5251

It's not the best product, so he went and spent more money to try and correct it's problems. Hence the truckload for Loaiza. Other successful sports (read: European Football) include money in thier trades all the time. Who was complaining about the $10 million for the Beckham trade?

Thats part of what makes soccer suck (aside from the game itself). We do not want that in Baseball or any other American sport. And I bet the fans of his old team were pretty upset.

Other teams can sign players for the amount the Yankees offer, so thats not my issue. No other team can fix a problem during the season by throwing money at it. Not even the Redsox. No other team can afford even 1 expensive mistake (Mondesi) or injuries to highly paid players (Giambi, Brown, Mussina) The Orioles made a mistake on Albert Belle and it killed them for years. They just made another, less expensive mistake on Ponson that they can't fix by paying a team to take him.

Manchester U was in better shape sans-Beckham then they were with Beckham, not to mention the fact that the $$ they got as a result couldn't have hurt them.

A lot of teams CAN fix things by throwing $$ around, they just DON'T (I'm talking to you, Montreal). Steinbrenner throws obscene amounts of money into the Yankees, and it shows in the form of championships, television networks, and a new stadium (planned for "across the street," currently). All three of those things foster a larger fan base, and sold out games -- all adding up to more $$ back. He spends more to get more.

Again, the true problem here is not that Steinbrenner is doing the things he does, since it is completely legal by league rules (the profit sharing BS doesn't PREVENT him from spending, it just "punishes" him). The problem is MLB rules. Blaming Steinbrenner is like blaming a Mormon for having multiple wives... it may be immoral by your standards, but it's completely legal by the Mormon rulebook.

Montreal is owned by the league. Each time pays 1/30th of their payroll, so they won't allow them to spend very much.

I don't blame Steinbrenner for the problems of baseball. I'm saying they shouldn't let him do it.
