I've always wanted to get into the Tenchi shows. Before I had cable I would catch an episode here and there at a friends house or a motel and I always enjoyed it. However when I look for DVDs, all I see are a bunch of individual DVD volumes. The only box set I saw was for an OVA of some sort.

Are there any plans for some more boxed sets in the future? I take forever to watch stuff, so if I have to wait a while that's no problem. There seems to be a recent trend of value-priced anime box set reissues, so I was hoping there was some Tenchi stuff in the pipeline so I could finally start catching up.

Also, what's the difference between Tenchi Muyo, Universe, In Tokyo, and all that?

This is where I got 99% of my Tenchi DVD's. They are in the process of re-realeseing Tenchi GXP in a 2 Vols in 1 set so maybe the others will get some sort of release like that in the future. As for the old boxsets they have allready been realesed and they still sell for like 120-150 bucks each if you can find one. On this site you can get Tenchi Universe which is basically an expanded version of the OVA vols 1,3-8 for 46 bucks total and it's a pretty good series. I didn't care a whole lot for Tenchi in Tokyo but I bought it anyways since i'm a completist.

TENCHI!!!....i used to love that anime back in 8th grade (1999) from what i remember, the stories (Except tokyo) are basically the same..tokyo i thought was the weakest of the 3, but still had some great moments..there used to be a site called "www.mytenchi.com where you could download all the episodes :( but it died awhile back i think...the 3 movies are really good if you get into the series
"daughter of darkness, tenchi muyo in love, and tenchi forever"

Pretty much what everyone else has said.

Tenchi is told in different universes. The characters stay mostly the same, but the way they came to be, and the storylines differ from series to series.

Tenchi Muyo - The OAV. Came first, and it's pretty good.
Tenchi Muyo Universe - The TV Series. I like the changes to the story here.
Tenchi in Tokyo - I didn't like it, and I wouldn't recommend buying this set. In Tokyo significantly changes the style from the other two in an annoying way and drags a lot.
