I thought this might be interesting. In talking with some new friends I've met the past couple of years, I realized that depending on where you're from, you might use different terminology for finishing a game than others.

If you have one that you tend to use not listed, post it in the thread! :)

Collection of the "others":
- flipped
- passed

A friend of mine always said he "flipped" a game when he beat it. He was a fat crazy, though.

I use "beat" the most often, though sometimes I say I "finished" it.

You forgot "master" although I hope no one has used that term since the 80s.

Ditto for me.
I usually say beat, although sometimes I'll say finished.
Same here, though it's usually in the negative context. "I still have not beaten ______." :whistle2:(

Am I the only one that remembers the old thread about this?

My favorite from that thread (that I still joke about with my friends):

"Solved."

The best part is that its applicable to other things as well!

If I just beat the boss and see the end story, it's beat or finished. If I finish every quest and unlock every thing in the game, I completed it.

"Sometimes I just finish a game by beating the boss, but I always complete a Zelda game."

or

"I beat Katamari Damacy"

This is how I would use those words in the poll.

"I beat the game"
"I finished that level"
" I completed that mission"
"I won that fight, game (Sporting events), or that boss battle"

I use beat the most so I voted for that one. I say beat more then anything.
"Hey, I passed Minish Cap the other day."
"Nerd."
I could insert some toilet humor here.
Am I the only one who read it like a sped and thought, fishing game?
Nope. I thought it was fishing when I first saw it too. I mainly use "beat" followed by a couple of fuck's if the end boss was tough/close call.
I like "Ascended", which is what you do if you beat nethack.
That's..... weird.

Like alot of people here I say I 'beat' or 'finished' a game. And I only say 'completed' when Ive done 100% of what you can do in the game.

But after thinking about it for a few minutes, theres a difference between 'beat' and 'finished'. When I think of beating a game, to me that implies that there was some difficulty involved and I may have not been able to 'beat' it, but eventually I did. But when I think of 'finishing' a game, its more like that was a forgone conclusion, like you finish watching a movie. I didnt beat it, cos there was nothing to beat, I just finished it. An example would be I just 'beat' Street Fighter, but I finished DragonQuest VIII.

Depends on the game really, I consider the way I refer to the game relates the final challenge. In an RPG you tend to fight a huge and long boss battle so I "defeated" the game, in a racing game it is either "win" or "clear". In most other games I say beat.

I just say "got through it". On a side note, I hate it when people call controllers "remotes", "sticks", or "paddles". Additionally, I hate it when people call game sections "boards".

beat is only one syllable, plus it just rolls off the toungue

sure, won is also only a single syllable, but that suggests that there is a competitor, and the competetor lost. I could go into a lot more details about how the game is not meant to "beat" you, and therefore it doesn't really "lose" when you "win," but ill leave it at that...

...damn, why do i always overanylize the most minor topics?

I agree on the controller part, but I do say board from time to time.

I say that too if the game was tedious or extra hard
