GS FAQ

Where is the weekly ad?
They ended the weekly ad for more rotation of deals. Please check the homepage and deal link for the current deals.

I can't find a trade in value for an item?
It might not be tradable or calling a store to find the value may be the only option.

How many copies of a game can I trade in?
You are allowed to trade in 4 copies of the same game (same system) within a rolling 30 day period.

Are there trade limits?
Yes, $500 cash minus some electronic trade ins and or $2000 trade credit in a rolling 30 day period.

Where is the weekly ad?
They ended the weekly ad for more rotation of deals in a period.

Can I use the $5 monthly coupon on gift cards?

Yes you can in store but not online please note not all gift cards will apply to this rule.

I have a $XX.xx pre-owned reward certificate, and I want to use it on a B2G1 transaction. Should I?
It depends. If the three games are equal value, do not use your certificate. The value of the certificate would be applied to the free game, which would not benefit you. If one game is more expensive, you can use the certificate to make it the same value as the other two games ($5 reward certificate applied to transaction with two $10 games and one $15 game would make all three games $10).

TERMINOLOGY AND LINGO:
ASL/SL: Assistant Store Leader, Store Leader; manager positions at GS.
B2G1: Buy two, get one free.
GS: GameStop
JD: Junior detective, an employee who is out to get someone
LP: Loss Prevention; this is the department that actually bans accounts after being flagged.
TC/TiC: Trade credit.
TIV/TV: Trade in value, or what a game currently trades for. When posting a TV for a game, always use the base value.

anywhere to see a list of these potential closing stores?
No public list as of now, apparently only corporate and any DMs may know exactly which stores are closing. My understanding is it will be disclosed to store employees officially in a meeting this week, so should be more or less public by friday. It also sounds like the closures will be in waves and not all at once.

One of my nearby GameStops had the entire front smashed by a car in an attempted robbery last spring and it's still boarded up (while open) and locked up at night with a pad lock. I wonder if they will just close the store instead of fixing it at this point.

Edit: This is on the east coast not California.
That's what GS did with the one local to me after the most recent break-in (rammed a stolen car through the store front). It's been rampant since the BLM movement, and sucks to see the place shut down (IMO) after being there for easily over 20 years.

I’m sad for GameStop, they have a refurbishing center, I wish they had focused on gaming accessory repairs, maybe started offering Hall Effect / TMR offerings, I think this would have been a good segment of their business to build upon. There is definitely a market for it.

I understand that physical stores are not super profitable (especially as many as they have), but I will never understand why GameStop didn't try to become even a competent eCommerce site or branch out. They have so much cash ($4.6B+) they could really expand into any area they want and yet the only consistent is a complete lack of direction. For example, why not open a game store for PC and try to compete with GoG, Steam, Epic, etc. Why not buy a game collecting site or How Long to Beat and use it to drive sales? Why not open a GameFly competitor where people can check out used games sitting on the shelf for a monthly fee? I'm not saying any of these are great ideas, but they don't seem to understand the goal is to get people in their ecosystem. It seems like they are hoping the entire business can be driven by moms buying a game a year at Christmas and people collecting funko pops and Pokemon cards.

It's always YMMV depending on the employee, but they're generally cool about it. I've had one store be super happy I asked because I guess a lot of people just steal the cases off the shelf.
And of course all three of my games came with the shitty GameStop cases. And none of the stores around me have them in stock.

Profitable or not, because of corporate greed...short-term, low effort investments whilst taking shortcuts whenever and however they can leads to fast, if not immediate, cash flow returns. Closing stores and laying-off employees generate positive fiscal data because higher ups would not have to pay workers and utilities, assets withheld. The board of directors do not have your best interest because they are not gamers...they are businessmen who, like flippers, want to spend the least to no amount of money and sell goods and/or services to consumers while upcharging, oftentimes overinflating, MSRP. Look at how Pro went from $15 to $25, and for what? Losing GameInformer is a benefit? 4% to 2% points back is a perk? "You want 4%, go apply for our proprietary 'credit card' and get a year of Pro for 'FREE' WOW VALUE...!" Says no one ever...you would now have to use 5 months of $5 vouchers to even start taking advantage of Pro, before it was just 3 months...old posts on GameFaqs detail Pro, formerly Elite/PowerUpRewards, offering B2G1F vouchers every month in the late 2000s/early 2010s. Great era for gamers, gaming, and GameStop...to all those who declined membership back in the day, now you know what good you've lost. Anyways, you're better of signing up for LEGIT cards that grant intro bonuses, quarterly categories, and no interest for +1 year(s). Rant done.

They have tried going ecommerce, they even opened up cell phone stores years ago. They open up random business frequently and dont talk about it. None less to say, they never work out and always end up being a loss.

Is anyone else getting GS credit card offers mailed to them from Comenity? I’m getting 2-3 mailed letters from them almost every day.
Yeah its actually super annoying. On top of those mailed letters constant spam of applying for the credit card doing online orders and not to mention the millions of emails.

Store closures being reported on reddit, looks be stores that are closing have 1-2 weeks.
Yep. Store down the block from me is closing on the 17th. They had signs on the door stating they are not accepting trades or preorders any longer.

The next closest Gamestop for me is about 20 minutes away so I'll probably let my pro expire in a few months and mostly be done with them unless some crazy Trade deal happens like the Series S one from a few months back. I enjoyed the small convenience of a 5 minute walk to Gamestop, burning my $5 coupon on some cheapo game and walking back home all in under an hour. Oh well. RIP

I think it's a complete lack of respect for and understanding of the customers. It seems like they assume everyone is a child and pops/cards are all they want. There is a large amount of possibilities given their name and footprint, yet no one wants to pivot the business model. The Gamestop Retro would be a good idea, but it's largely garbage and fakes. I'm super interested in customizing old consoles but some of that stuff is very niche.

Reducing the physical footprint without changing the insane online minimum for free shipping will 💯 kill off this store sooner than later.

Gl with that.

If anything, they should have tied lower free shipping thresholds with Pro membership.

I have gotten 0. My credit score is in the 800’s, BUT my credit is frozen. (it’s super easy to unfreeze for a couple of days if you do want to apply for a credit card).

So freeze your credit. A. Your SSN probably is out there from one of the multiple hacks. B. You don’t get credit card offers.

What will happen to pre-existing preorders for stores that are closing?

You would think they would transfer it the next closest GameStop, but I wouldn't be surprised if you just lose them unless you transfer it yourself while you still can.

I rarely preorder stuff but if I remember right when a store by me closed during COVID, the preorder I had there was transferred to the next one closest to that one. I only found out when I visited the store by my house and they showed in their computer I had a preorder in another store.

My buy2get1 free came in today, took long enough! A question for those that ordered Persona 3 reloaded and Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth on PS5...

Did your copies arrive with the LaD Poster, sticker and DLC slip also? Mine did along with Persona 3 reload bonus DLC soundtrack slip. I'm beginning to think that this was one of those converted new to used scenario.

The used sticker on the back has the same trade in/shipment date as when they were shipped out.

I got one game from my buy2get1, it was Metaphor and it had an unused preorder bonus inside the case. i know these are always low level gear or just cosmetic junk but i thought it was weird not to redeem it.

Serves them right. This is what you deserve after pushing all the suburban mom & pop retro vg stores out of business. No one even goes there anymore. They have nothing to sell. literally used games for $62 in 2025. and what's coming back? retro consoles and other niche interests. Because physical game publishing has been greatly diminished. Can't wait until this utter dogshit company goes completely under. literally just do-nothing regional managers and corporate pigs at the top profiting off of part-time and supervisor employee abuse.

So, amid all of the closure news, something happened to me that never has happened in the 20+ years I’ve shopped at GS and been on CAG: they made me pay for postage on a shipment, after the online order was completed.

USPS rang my doorbell and said I had a package addressed to me, but I need to pay the postage in order to release it for delivery. This is an online GS order that had free shipping as part of my $75+ order. The mail person told me that GS put it in the mail without paying for postage, so I had to pay $9 (I got a USPS receipt, so not a scam…). Worse yet, no original cases for the used games in this order :(

If you search locations on the mobile app and pull up the hours for the individual stores.... the stores that close this Saturday only have hours listed for 3 days. They haven't updated the stores that are closing in the next couple of weeks yet as they are doing them in waves. So many each week. Not confirmed but it appears that the majority if not all mall locations will be closing in the coming weeks.

Potential first wave closure of stores for January 2025, 118 stores:

Where was this information from? I tried the links and get errors.

So maybe 5% of stores based on 120. Still nothing really.
No, there are more closing later this month. I went into my main store to use my $5. The usual guy asked me if I had any open preorders because they are closing the 18th. (They are one of the stores that got closing boxes before the announcement this week).
my store is not on that list…yet.

yeah, cause when no one is left selling physical games sony, nintendo and microsoft will have so many sales on their digital storefronts
You buy most of your physical games from Gamestop??

I know that discussing selling your own console five times per week is profound to you, but ROFL. I guess Target, Amazon, Walmart, Gamefly, and other webstores / international don't exist when you are a GS cultist rube. Nvm the 9 black friday games I got brand new from everywhere else for ~$200 TOTAL this year I guess.

As if GS is setting any sales or deals trends whatsoever lmao. But who am I kidding. I'm talking to (some) people who still play the lottery on blank cases and complain about it afterwards, afterall.

So, amid all of the closure news, something happened to me that never has happened in the 20+ years I’ve shopped at GS and been on CAG: they made me pay for postage on a shipment, after the online order was completed.

Great company, yea. Whatever would we do with out them?

Buy games ANYWHERE ELSE I suppose.

Dammit. The Celebration Village location is closing near me. I don't go to any Gamestop much, but this one is the closest to my work and other family, so it's the one I go to. There is one down the Beltline from it closer to GR in Woodland still, but otherwise the next couple in my area are further out in the surrounding cities. If Woodland ever closes (it was an EB originally, and has been there for decades) the others aren't exactly worth making specific drives to.

I don't know if its different in other areas where there aren't many Gamestops. But near me my target and walmart really just carry new releases. So the selection is VERY limited. That on top of you only get b2g1 or 4for40/4for20 sales at Gamestop and you get reward points. And there are of course those who take advantage of them taking in trades. Regardless of how poorly Gamestop does business with selling used games as new and the lottery system of if you are getting a game complete or not scratched to hell; There are legitimate deals to be had and value in their selection of both games and accessories, and occasionally the prices. Things I don't see anywhere else. And even if you play the online ordering lottery with them you do always have the option to walk into a store to return.
But again, I could be in an area of too many Gamestops that big box stores don't bother to compete, but my local Walmarts and Targets actually look to be shrinking their game sections with how poorly they are maintained and stocked. Its like a waste of floor real estate. So you are welcome to prove me wrong. Haven't seen amiibos restocks anywhere outside of a gamestop brick and mortar and the NYC Nintendo store.

I'm more interested in the stores shutting down in order to potentially have a local business move into these areas that don't have them anymore. Gamestop is a failing business because of their own practices and there are people that can run a better game store.
Would be cool for Funcoland to come back.
