Can I use the $5 monthly coupon on gift cards?

Yes you can in store but not online please note not all gift cards will apply to this rule.

I have a $XX.xx pre-owned reward certificate, and I want to use it on a B2G1 transaction. Should I?
It depends. If the three games are equal value, do not use your certificate. The value of the certificate would be applied to the free game, which would not benefit you. If one game is more expensive, you can use the certificate to make it the same value as the other two games ($5 reward certificate applied to transaction with two $10 games and one $15 game would make all three games $10).

TERMINOLOGY AND LINGO:
ASL/SL: Assistant Store Leader, Store Leader; manager positions at GS.
B2G1: Buy two, get one free.
GS: GameStop
JD: Junior detective, an employee who is out to get someone
LP: Loss Prevention; this is the department that actually bans accounts after being flagged.
TC/TiC: Trade credit.
TIV/TV: Trade in value, or what a game currently trades for. When posting a TV for a game, always use the base value.

And speaking of CA, check out this neat place called BookOff. They have a HUGE selection of video games, including retro; however, they upmark prices to compete with the online market. Found some cheap gems:

[5.99] DmC Devil May Cry Definitive Edition XB1
[7.99] Hellmut PS4
[7.99] No Man's Sky PS4
[7.99] The Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian 360 CIB
[19.99] Ninja Gaiden Black XBX CIB
[24.99] Prototype 2 Blackwatch Collector's Edition PS3 CIB {game and codes sealed}

All discs are flawless, surprisingly! Also, you can trade-in your video game and pop culture stuff with them for in-store credit.

I only know of Book-Off in SoCal, specifically one in Little Tokyo that I've been to. In the Bay Area, there are none that I know of.

I had the chance to visit a few Book Offs last time I was in LA and there was a great selection and I picked up some manga—that said, they definitely know what they have for the most part, but I’m sure stuff slips through the cracks. At least the East Bay has a few Half Price Books!

Half Price books doesn’t have any idea about what they have, so they just overprice everything now.

Funny enough, the preowned price of Star Wars Outlaws finally got fixed to match the sale price of new. Most everything else went up though, making B2G1 kinda useless.

I recall Gravity Rush 2 being $29.99/$27.49 just earlier this year. Now it's $49.99/$47.49, SHEESH!!

Traded in 8 games for $242 after DK:CR remastered pre order. Finally got rid of some filters i added from the last b2g1.
hold the phone, that comes out to $

Id supposed corporate wanted to end b2g1 early cause of the game publishers ending their physical sales, but they're stuck on a weekend-sale system (unlike all other brick and mortar stores)

The BookOff in LT is codenamed Ani-Labs which means their store is very small and might not have any video games aside from the Japanese ones. You would have to visit their other, bigger stores in LAC, OC, and RSC. There is also one in SDC.

Bookoff in NYC is ridiculously overpriced since COVID. Last time I went I there I got nothing. Used manga only $1 of MSRP. Games overpriced. I was disappointed.

Best solution is to go in store and investigate those games and see the condition. Buying from online inventory is like trying to win scratch tickets
I have won on instants far more often than I have gotten complete games though. I go for the ones that have highest percentage of winning. Just hit 50$ on a 5$ ticket Friday and only bought 3.

Made several purchases this time, was able to find way more in store vs the last sale where I feel like I couldn’t find anything. Now to see of the online orders how many come complete.

If I buy preowned games from the website and they come with those shitty cases can I go in the store and try to swap them out for the real case or will the employees give me a hard time?

You shouldn't have a problem. I haven't done it in awhile but I haven't had any issues in the past. Just call a local GS and ask them if they have the real case and if you can come in swap it out. If they say no, call up another one.

It's always YMMV depending on the employee, but they're generally cool about it. I've had one store be super happy I asked because I guess a lot of people just steal the cases off the shelf.

Yep. Stupidly happened at my local gamestop with the new Astrobot PS5. Shelf / gutted case that is 'new' was stolen, the disc is in a sleeve behind the registers. They're still trying to call it 'new'. When I asked an employee if I can return it should the gift recipient already have it from christmas, they said "we don't return opened games"... I'm not kidding either. Couldn't make it up.

Question for the experts. I just upgraded my ps5 to a slim. Is now a good time to trade in my og ps5 to gamestop or wait for a promo? 275 trade in credit seems low. Thanks in advance!

Personally, I would wait or sell locally. A lot of people traded theirs in for a pro and the Slim was just on sale for cheap for black friday so they have a surplus and have recently sold for a pretty low price.

More like a sidegrade, practically same tech specs and everything. $275 is definitely low, but for the phat someone is highly likely to buy it from you. $350 is a stretch. $300 to $325 is reasonable.

It was $400 back in August 2024, which is when I traded mine in. I somewhat regret it though... it seems to be the disc drive on the slim is 100x louder and always whirs, whereas I don't recall ever hearing it so loudly with my original launch PS5.

Welcome to the PS5 fan lottery. My launch PS5 was loud, my slim was incredibly quiet, and now my pro is super loud. You can Google it, there's a bunch of people on reddit comparing the fans.

My Phat5 is deadass silent, but the SCRY fans I bought for it makes my room sound like a jet terminal. I do NOT advise buying SCRY fans even the V2 revision. I wear headphones anyways, so it doesn't bother me much. It's nice to see how much more bulky and premium I made my PS5 look. Thnx Etsy!

It isn’t the fan. I‘m very sensitive to low sounds / humming. I can hear the drive spinning when I play discs. I don’t recall hearing the ‘whirring’ with my launch PS5 phat.

That's Funny because the first thing i noticed about my attachable disc drive when I installed it in my pro was how silent it was. It was definitely a upgrade to my launch ps5 so I'm guessing it's a lottery on what you receive.

I have a PS5 slim and some discs make it sound like an airplane going off (1st disc of the Yakuza collection is especially bad). I never had lunch version so I can’t compare.

A kind PSA reminder for Discover [It] and CapitalOne [Quicksilver] credit card holders:

Each referral for Discover It grants you and your referee $100
Each referral for Capital One Quicksilver grants you $200, a third caps you at $100

2 hours and 15 minutes left!

Based off reddit rumors it looks like all Orange County CA stores are closing. That seems rather worrying for the company as a whole
I wouldn't be surprised if the price of Pro spikes $10 more early to mid-2025. And considering the number of stores closing, GS might be kind enough to give 1% extra points in return for being a Pro member and proprietary credit card holder, from 4% to 6% total. Which begs the question, who is the CEO!?

I stopped by one of my city’s Retro GameStop stores and they had a nice, small selection of games and consoles. I saw a mint condition NES for $100 and quite a few solid games from the NES to Genesis. The section was small but it was really cool to see. The prices are way better than other regional chains like Vintage Stock/Movie Trading Company.

I almost considered buying the NES or the black PS Vita 2000. I look forward to going again.

Yeah I just did a quick count of stores, looks like only 16 left in all of Orange County? They've already been closing stores in the area over the past year but that seems a little low.

Lots of leases are up, so i imagine that is one factor and what the rent increase may be to renew.

I don't think it's been verified yet, but i also saw a post of GameStop completely exiting Australia.

One of my nearby GameStops had the entire front smashed by a car in an attempted robbery last spring and it's still boarded up (while open) and locked up at night with a pad lock. I wonder if they will just close the store instead of fixing it at this point.
