It's certainly telling that radical Islamic theocracies are adopting programs to combat AIDS that are more rational then the policies pushed by Bush W and his loyal crowd of fanatical christian supporters.

Bijan Nasirimanesh, who heads a drop-in [heroin addiction] clinic that dispenses needles, bleach and methadone in a hard-hit area of south Tehran, said, "It's ironic that Iran, very fundamentalist, very religious -- very religious -- has been able to convince itself" to embrace such policies.

I like how Iran is one of the few countries where you can legally erace all trace of your born gender, even to the point of changing you birth certificate if you undergo an operation (either to become male or female). This was even endorsed by ayatollah khomeini (even granted his blessings to people who wrote letters to him on the subject), who saw this as a different issue than homosexuality, and is endorsed by most of the ruling clergy. This is the only real legal option given to homosexuals.

Khomeini reasoned that if men or women wished so intensely to change their sex, to the point that they believed they were trapped inside the wrong body, then they should be permitted to transform that body and relieve their misery. His opinion had more to do with what isn't in the Koran than what is. Sex change isn't mentioned, Khomeini's thinking went, so there are no grounds to consider it banned.
