Keep in mind, though, not everyone wants to fight or even hold a lethal weapon. I'm not saying half the populace wouldn't be up to the idea, but a good chunk of people aren't into killing somebody- myself included.

So you don't believe in killing for self defense?

Let me guess, you'd just assume letting those that supposedly "like" killing keep the bad guys away from you because you are only willing to pick up a weapon and kill in the case of a direct and imminent threat to you or your family. Am I close?

Reminds me of a conversation I once had with a close friend in Europe. She always argued that killing was wrong, under any circumstance. I'd posit hypothetical situations for her, such as a burglar about to kill her child, and ask her if she'd still kill to save her kid. She got really frustrated at having to squeak out a "yes" answers to such hypothetical questions and now we don't talk very often. She's far more comfortable believing it's never ok to kill, and not have to think about situations where it might be.

If it were absolutely necessary, depending on the circumstances, I might if I had to. Keep in mind for most of my life I've been learning how to save life, not end it. I don't necessarily believe in a caste system, but I think there are certain people who fit the role of a soldier. I happen to fit the role of a doctor.

Not every nuclear warhead is intended to go off, too.

If an invading country understands every citizen of a country from 16-66 is trained for guns up to and including artillery, melee weapons, unarmed fighting, field medicine or a number of other skills that change the shape of a battlefield, the invading country might be deterred from picking a fight.

If there were 100 million trained adults, an invading army would need at least 300 million soldiers to dislodge the current population. Those 300 million soldiers would require 2.7 billion support personnel to keep them fed and their vehicles fueled.
The modern "Militia" is each state's National Guard unit.
Incorrect. The current National Guard is at the beck and call of the military.

Instead of assisting with Hurricane Katrina, the National Guard was spreading freedom in Iraq.

That and the National Guard is paid. A true militia is volunteer with no pay.
