The best of the PlayStation budget titles

As you may know, late in the PlayStation's life, a lot of budget titles were released, many under $10. The price and PS2's backward compatibility played a big factor in the success of these budget titles. There was a good share of crap, but there were some gems as well.

Here's a couple publishers that released quite a few budget games, and their standout titles (imo):

A1/Agetec - Responsible for all the games you see with generic titles (Snowboarding, Racing, Bowling, etc). The only one I own is Racing, which is basically a Gran Turismo clone that has 3 circuits and six vehicles. Not bad for the $2.50 I paid but not worth much more. I've heard good things about Puzzle Star Sweep, Board Game Top Shop, and the Shooter games but haven't played them. (should I pick them up?)

Mud Duck - In the last couple years of the PlayStation lifespan, Mud Duck released several titles, ranging from air hockey to racing to puzzle games. I highly recommend Qix Neo. And if you like puzzlers, Cleopatra's Fortune is fun.

More recommendations by various publishers:

Gekioh: Shooting King - Awesome shmup with various bonus game modes, my favorites being the pocket and comical modes.

Pro Pinball: Fantastic Journey - One of my favorite pinball video games. I haven't tried the other Pro Pinball games yet, but if they're as good as Fantastic Journey, I'm sure I will eventually.

Feel free to share your thoughts on the games here and add any of your favorites/recommendations that I didn't mention.

Board Game Top Shop is excellent, and it's by Agetec. Fun, Monopoly-style play.

I also liked Darkstone, by Take 2, which is a lot like Diablo.

Keep in mind that on, used sites and ebay, you can find a ton of good cheap PSone titles for well under $10. For example, I got Jet Moto and Die Hard Trilogy at EBgames.com for about $1.50 each.

Puzzle Star Sweep was cool, and the translation in the manual is hilarious. I don't remember if this was a budget title or not, I'm pretty sure it was, but it was always kind of difficult to find (CC was the only place I ever saw it), anyway it's called Builders Block and it's a really good puzzle game. Tall infinity was also good, probably my second favorite of the budget puzzle games.

i was going to say.. there are a lot more name budget titles for PS one.. but i know what he was talking about.. i can't say i ever bought any

In addition to everything already mentioned, I've got to mention a couple of budget choices from one of my favorite companies, Natsume.

First up is Turnabout, which was developed by renowned Japanese developer ArtDink. It's a pretty unique puzzle game, in which you simply rotate a playing field around 90 degrees at a time either clockwise or counterclockwise, in order to move colored balls (they'll always fall straight down) so that they fall adjacent to like-colored, stationary squares. It's got something like 150 levels (enough to last ages, I assure you), and a easy-to-use level editor, which you can play with forever. The graphics fit the job perfectly, and there is some very pleasant music to play by. Overall, one of my favorite slow-paced Playstation puzzlers. And the price tag? Well, it originally retailed for $10, but I found it at Toys R Us for 99 cents! 99 of the best pennies I've ever spent.

Another good budget title from Natsume is Skydiving Extreme. I must say, there aren't too many other skydiving games to compare it to, so it's probably the best in it's genre. ;) It's a fun, unique little game, though. Grab it if you see it cheap, and you might be pleasantly suprised.

Moving on to another publisher...how about ol' Interplay?
Though it didn't debut as a budget title, it hit the bargains almost immediatly, so I'll reccomend Gekido, a beat-em-up from Naps Team. Fun game, definately reccomendable to fans of the genre, or anyone looking for cheap PS1 games. It was followed by a really amazing sequel on GBA called Gekido: Kintaro's Revenge, which I also highly reccomend. Grab either if you see 'em cheap.
