ALERT: Preorders available for a few select games at most Blockbuster stores

Most regular Blockbuster locations (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are taking preorders for Guitar Hero Aerosmith, Star Wars Force Unleashed, and possibly a few other games (YMMV on the cashier knowing about it). $5 is required for a deposit.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos and to post any trade-in values you have obtained. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system. One of the CAG Wiki editors will then add them to the Wiki.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals which we haven't had recently anyway). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

General Info
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Spring/Summer 2008) most Blockbuster stores are now selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, and Wii's. Most still do not sell handheld systems (a few apparently sell the DS but I've never seen them there). As a result of not selling used hardware, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Only Gamerush stores allow for preorders of your choice of new games (though, it seems, some stores have stopped taking preorders). On the other hand, some regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for a few select mega-release titles (recent examples: Halo 3, SSBB, Mario Kart, GTA IV).

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, some regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games. I will be maintaining a list below here for those with Blockbuster credit but no access to a GR store.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New games that may be available for purchase at select non-GR Blockbusters
For those with access to only regular Blockbuster stores but wanting to take advantage of the decent trade-in values Blockbuster offers, this is the list of new games being sold by some regular Blockbuster locations. Note that they will generally not get new games on the release date. They will most likely have them a few days to weeks later. Stock is usually very limited and they do not seem to get restocks of most games. So once something is sold out they will most likely not get it back. Many of the "older "new games in the list below may be hard to find at this point.

GuardianE thanks :) Now I gotcha. I'm definitely going to try this out now! I am learning new things every day ^_^ I imagine you professional flippers do very, very well for yourselves. Give yourself a pat on the back...you deserve it!

I just started a month ago and only have really done a lot this past week. Most of the people in this thread are more knowledgable than me. :)

Be careful, though. BBV does TIV drops on tuesdays (?), from what I've read here. If you're ordering online, it may be safer to wait until the beginning of that cycle so you know what price it will be for that week.

So I ended up getting my PS3 at noon and soon after I hooked it up to my tv. I just wish the thing would come with HDMI cables cause it would look amazing on my HDTV. Well yeah back on subject, a friend and I both pre-ordered the bundle and the store only got two in which was ours, so we were lucky to get the bundle because another employee called in to save one for himself. Well back to MGSO loading screen.

Thanks CAG!

PS:pics will follow later tonight.

monoprice .com has hdmi cables for a decent price:)

GS TIV (right before closing):

MtR WII - $11.60
Spiderman 3 360 - $10.50
PotC 360 - $10.50
Beautiful Katamari 360 - $11.60
MtR 360 - $10.50
Alien Syndrome Wii - $10.50
360 microphone - $4.40

Values after Edge and bonus. Still have 4 MtR 360 left but I need to pick up other games to trade in with them. Most $9.99 games (BK excluded) are actually traded at a loss but MtR 360 more than makes up for this.

American Idol: KR has turned into a pretty good flip. Game gets $35 at BB and microphone gets $4.40 at GS. $13.5x into $39.40. :D

Also, if you use the "10% off used games" e-mail newsletter in the GS thread, you can pick up Stranglehold for $14.39 before taxes.
360 Spiderman 3 $5 base trade in at GS tonight.
360 VT 3 $6 base trade in at GS this afternoon
You wrote $5 fot VT3 in the Gamestop thread - I still have that screen up ;).

But, yes, I did verify that it still gets $6 late tonight. Too bad they couldn't find their one copy at the Blockbuster I went to tonight .
that is really strange, as I traded in two MTR's at two different locations, and got $8.85 after bonuses for each of them. BAH... Oh well. I'm just waiting for the B2G1 sale to transfer this all back to GR anyway, and start the process over of moving it back to GS. I wish ANY of the GS's near me had Stranglehold in stock.

IO, since there seems to be some indication the sale will start Monday, have you started thinking about the best B2G1 flips to move credit back to GR?

Obviously Stranglehold and Sega Tennis, but any others you think present a golden opportunity with that sale going on?
I don't know about MtR as I could find those (so maybe it did drop unless someone else reported it at $10.50 still - Edit: emg28's post showed up while I was compising this one - that pretty much confirms for me that MtR is still as before), but I did verify that Spiderman 3 is still $10.50. Because of the uncertainty I passed up buying about 6 more copies and just got 1 instead (most stores have several of these) as a trial run. Clearly, I wish I had gotten more especially as I pretty much traded everything at the first GS I went to and only had a couple of things left for the second one. Everything came up as I expected ($11.60 for Beautiful Katamari, $10.50 for Alien Syndrome, $13.60 for Spiderman FoF, $10.50 for PSU, $11.60 for VT3, $10.50 for PotC...)

But this ordeal did represent the difference between Blockbuster and Gamestop. It always takes 15 minutes to buy a couple of games at Blockbuster because they can never find the discs and when they do they only get 1 copy out and you have to ask them to get the others when the one they showed you was apparently run over a few times in a gravel driveway. And on the trade-in side, I dropped 10 games at one Gamestop tonight and they were delighted - no 3rd degree or funny looks, and I was in and out faster than it took to find 1 game at Blockbuster. No BS lines about how they "have a ton of those" (when they had none - happened to me on VP Party Animals at one store). Man, I want to do more of this - I just wish I could make the purchasing side at Blockbuster go a little faster.

So, as a result, sprintfinanceguy, I'm not too keen on bringing my credit back to Blockbuster. You guys are on your own on that one. I may do one set of Stranglehold (though, as I suspected, that will be difficult as the 2 Gamestops I went to tonight only had 1 copy each). I guess I'll keep an eye on whatever else you guys find. I'm guessing Sonic Riders might be a good one if it gets $26. I may swing by Costco and pick that up actually as I need to go there anyway.

In any case, in my mini-run tonight I converted $85.92 of Blockbuster credit into $92.80 at Gamestop and also traded in NBA Street Homecourt, Open Season, Blue Dragon (needed another mint 3-game case for my own copy of Blue Dragon so this was perfect), Genji, and LotR:BFME II at Gamestop for more than Blockbuster would have given me.

emg28 - Yeah, American Idol would be great if it wasn't still $35 at every Target around here. On my way home I stopped by one and for the first time in a long while left empty-handed. They had some $13.98 CoD2, but even with the coupon that wasn't worth it. Other than that it was $27.98 THPG, $34.98 American Idol, and a handful of $41.98 PS3 games. I did find some $4.97 stuff at Sears, though, which was a complete surprise.

Have you also noticed that Blockbuster is never prepared for trade-ins? I've gotten more confused looks and trainee-teaching in the past few days than I've ever experienced before. Pretty much every new Blockbuster I went to, they had to train someone new to use the system. Hell, by the middle I could've taught the process faster than some of the people.

Well, yeah, it has always been that way. I'm surprised at the comments you got about Value cards from some of the stores (that you mentioned in the GS thread). I've had a store or two tell me THEY didn't have Value cards any more, but they were certainly willing to put the credit on one for me if I already had it. And I have gotten a few new cards recently (as I try not to keep more than $150 on each one so as not to get the Junior Detectives all excited). It certainly isn't any decree from corporate keeping them from putting the credit there. What you can try to do is ask for a gift card with your credit later. Some clerks may not do it - but just tell them you want to give it to someone and they probably will oblige.

Yeah, I usually have to remind the noobs that I have to sign the trade receipt. Sometimes trading to a noob is good because they usually concentrate more on getting through the trade than on what you are trading. ;)

Picked up a stack of games at one BB in Brea. The genius running the register charged me for NEW games when I was purchasing USED games. At first, I thought that I had stepped into a newly franchised store that no longer belonged to corporate ($60 worth of games ballooned into $196). My plan was to simply pay for the games then return them later as to avoid suspicion...that is until I looked at the receipt. Said "genius" rung everything up as new and completely ignored the fucking price stickers on the fucking game. Now that I realize that this wasn't some trip to a bizarro BB, I might just have to tear into a CSR the next time I stop by. Not that I want to come off as a sucky customer, but the guy should have realized;

(a) The prices didn't match the ones on the box
(b) PRP didn't show up on the screen
(c) They don't have any new copies of these specific games anymore
(d) They're fucking PRP

Okay, now that my anger has subsided somewhat, I did manage to find a boatload of games that are ideal for a BB/GR-GS trade. Unfortunately, said store happens to be the one referred to above, but almost every BB has yielded something of value.

That sucks edavis. I've had that happen on occasion when they first ring something up, but they always fix it pretty quickly. It's like when they quote you the used sale price as the trade-in price.

Anyway, I should add that the second Blockbuster I went to tonight had most of those games in the OP marked at $19.99 - $24.99 (but of course they all rang up the correct $9.99 - $12.99). That list is invaluable not only to figure out what to take to GS, but to get the correct pricing info! I'm glad I put it together ;).
I think I've just made my last run...

I've turned $100 BBV credit into $476.31 GS credit (after one more trade in to GS tomorrow).

Latest TIV at Gamestop (I think all repeats, but I figure it can't hurt) plus bonus and EDGE:

360
Monster Madness- 10.50
Pirates of the Carribbean- 10.50
Spider-man 3- 10.50
Top Spin 2- 9.40
Virtua Tennis 3- 11.60
Meet the Robinsons- 10.50
Spider-man: Friend or Foe- 13.80
WWE: Smackdown Vs. Raw 2007- 9.40

Wii
Alien Syndrome- 10.50
Sonic and the Secret Rings- 14.90

Did this literally less than an hour ago. In MD.

I don't know how you went from $100 BBV credit to $476 GS credit when the games on your trade in list are only good for transfering BBV credit to GS credit. Could you please let me know what's that about?

Probably started with BBV credit...spent that on the games you see above to trade for GS credit. Then used some of the GS credit to get games that trade in at high value at BBV...rinse repeat.
Genji at Gamestop for more than Blockbuster would have given me..
What did Genji (PS3) get you?

360
Monster Madness- 10.50
Pirates of the Carribbean- 10.50
Top Spin 2- 9.40

What was BBs price tag on these? I saw Monster Madness for 14.99, but it was the same BB that listed Meet the Robs for 9.99 instead of 6.99.

I just traded in straglehold today the case and cover was a bit beat up, the usual gamestop. But I was suprised the disc was mint. When I traded it in the guy working didn't bother to check the condition of the disk. I might pick up a new game soon.
So much for the Gamestop B2G1 sale happening this weekend..... fingers crossed for next week.
People are ignoring the post I made about the b2g1, in the store I went into with the signs the manager said it was suppose to start on the 16th. :D

Yeah, Lamelitersniper is right on the ball. That's exactly what I've been doing.

As for Monster Madness, it's 9.99. NEVER trust the label at BBV. There's only one or two BBVs that have had the actual correct sticker price. The other 10-13 did not.

Sorry to ask a pretty nooby question, but I've read the most recent 20+ pages (I recently discovered the phenomenon of flipping and it all seems very interesting :D), and I haven't had this question answered:

When you buy a used game from Gamestop (e.g. Stranglehold) and trade it in to BlockBuster Video, do you take off the yellow "USED" stickers from the box, or just leave them on?

I want to make an experimental run today by buying 1 used copy of Stranglehold from a Gamestop in my area and then flip it to BlockBuster, but I want to make sure this thing goes off without any hitches.

Thanks!

I'd personally take the stickers off. When flipping to either store, you'll definitely want to take off any sticker over the original UPC, as they need to scan that (or that'll make it easier, anyway) to get the trade in. But, I'd just remove all of them. I feel weird when the tag says $17.99 and I'm trading it in for $33.

Thanks! I just remember from past experience that the labels are sometimes tricky/annoying to remove. And it seems a lot of people trade in games with generic GS/BBV covers to the other store... do people ever get called on that?

Another thing I've noticed is that a lot of new games (e.g. from Target/Sears clearance) get their shrinkwrap ripped off and get traded in as used... haha must make some of the CAGers here sad . But on that note: would using the 10% GameDays coupon to buy a new Sega Superstars Tennis for $17.99 + tax be worth it to trade in at BBV for the $26?
But on that note: would using the 10% GameDays coupon to buy a new Sega Superstars Tennis for $17.99 + tax be worth it to trade in at BBV for the $26?
Not really. But for the PS3 version, you get $30. Which is worth it to me. HOWEVER, the coupon does not automatically scan for it. You'll have to have the cashier adjust the price. Just look surprised when the coupon scans and there's no discount. They'll be confused, and in all likelihood, just give you the discount manually. Also, the PS3 Sega Superstars Tennis will have to be rung up in separate transactions if you get more than one. For some reason, the first comes up as 19.99, but the second will come up as 49.99.

It all depends on how many you're willing to buy. The more you're willing to buy, the bigger risk you're taking, as you may run out of games to convert back to GS. But it also yields higher profit, and can make your trips worthwhile. If you just want pure BBV credit, then it depends on if you're using store credit or cash to buy the flip material, too. Since I was willing to drive around and they were running out of Strangleholds, I figured it was okay.

I'm so sad now. I just called my local Blockbuster which is right down the street from me and asked:

Me: "Hi there, I was wondering if your Blockbuster store accepts game trade-ins for store credit?"
BBV: (rudely) "No. No We don't....we never did".
Me: "Are there any around here that do that you know of?"
BBV: "No. No, we're all franchised".
Me: "Are there any in the state of Connecticut".
BBV: "No. No. No."

Thanks a lot BBV =P Anyone in Connecticut know if she was just BS'ing me? There has to be at least one in the fine state of CT SOMEWHERE =P

Guardian, can you answer that part of the question? Thanks a lot for the info on the second half though =].

And lol it looks like you and I are the only ones up at this hour... I'm waiting for it to be 10 AM so my GameStops/Blockbusters open and I can make my first (but hopefully not last) run!

It can look suspicious if they're all BBV cases, but usually BBV has some games in original cases for purchase too. As long as you have some of those mixed in with the stickers off, then you're alright. You just tend to buy a lot of games at BBV because they're cheap or something :p.

In all the Gamestops I've been to, only one time did the guy mention that "they're all Blockbuster cases." He joked that I was buying games from BBV and selling them to GS for profit. I chuckled nervously because I thought he was serious at first. In another case, the guy kinda was annoyed because the BBV games had stickers on them over the barcodes and he had to look up the price manually. The easier you make the cashiers' jobs, the quicker things'll go.

Also, when trading into BBVs, be prepared to take a while. You have to sign a thing that makes your account a "trade account." and they'll probably be teaching some rookie about how to do trade-ins as well.

Just make sure to get all your trade in before next work week starts. Never know how these TIVs'll change. ;)

I'm surprised someone answered the phone. The Blockbusters by me don't open until 10. Maybe that's a sign of a franchise store.

I wouldn't give up, and I wouldn't be calling. I'd just walk into the blockbuster with my stack of games and ask to open a trading account. If they don't do it, they can certainly point you to one that will if any exist in your area.

I want to make an experimental run today by buying 1 used copy of Stranglehold from a Gamestop in my area and then flip it to BlockBuster, but I want to make sure this thing goes off without any hitches.

Thanks!
No matter which place I've flipped to, I always make sure to take all of the existing stickers off. BB games tend to have 10 price stickers on them. lol. They peel off easy though.
Why does everyone move their credit from BBV to GS? Just because GS gets more stuff and gets it on release date?
Answered your question with all your words :D

Basically, yes. Unless you have a Gamerush near you, the selection is very slim at BBV. GS gets more games, some exclusives, some collector's editions ,and some Used game deals every now and then that make it worth shopping there.

Yeah I'm assuming that Gamestop will always have more games available in comparison as well as systems, limited edition games, controllers, accessories, etc.

I'd really like to trade in with BBV but it doesn't seem that any of them around me do so. Maybe I'll have to save up some games and take with me on my next trip out of state. Seems an awfully silly thing though to have to drive out of state to save a few dollars on TIV :) Stupid BBV =P

That seems really odd to me. Where are you located? There's no chance that some are just clueless employees that don't know policy?

Opportunities to moving credit from BBV to GS are rare. While the reverse can be done just about every day... and with various promotions it's very easy to move credit from GS to BBV and make a nice profit.
Are PS2 games worth trading these days. I have tons of them and the system is broke.. I now have a Xbox360 and a Wii.
Depending on what PS2 games you have, they may be worth putting on eBay. You can't use PS2 games with this current promotion and there are only some titles that will grant you a good TIV. And even these titles would net you much more online, usually.

SAHWEEET! my BBV/GR has ELEVEN (11) copies of MGS...damn straight...going to pick it up today and also going to grab a couple SEGA superstars Tennis (360) for trade-in :whistle2:D man i LOVE this thread!

Er... you shouldn't be buying SST from BBV. You should be selling SST to BBV.

And do not buy the 360 version. Buy the PS3 version. Wii goes for $26, so I'd imagine 360 to be the same. PS3 trades in at $30 at BBV.

my bad i meant to say was going to pick up SST on the WAY TO BBV! that would be awkward to buy it at BBV then turn around and trade it in to BBV...*snickers to self..haha i really go tthe best of THEM!*
Yeah, Lamelitersniper is right on the ball. That's exactly what I've been doing.

As for Monster Madness, it's 9.99. NEVER trust the label at BBV. There's only one or two BBVs that have had the actual correct sticker price. The other 10-13 did not.
Errr is that a dig at me or? E and P are pretty far away on the keyboard haha.

^ sick burn lol...lame....hah

Just flipped a ton of BB credit to GS, and managed to find the mother load of MTR 360s so I flipped into a positive margin. While at the gamestops I hid all the 'collectors editions' of the games Ive been meaning to pick up (ff12, perfect dark zero, gears of war) so that b2g1 better start soon. :)

Also there have been no drops in trade in (at gamestop) value for:
VT3 360
MTR 360 and Wii
Katamari 360
Spiderman 3 360
Spiderman FoF 360

The only thing I see myself buying from GS is Gears of War2 LE but that won't come out till November, and other then that I do not want to give GS my money since lately I've been having bad experience with them. I'm fine with waiting an extra day to get my game since the GR I go to has really awesome customer service with a good selection of used games. Oh and from what I understand, the people at that store know what we are doing, and they are fine with it since we bring them business. Is this correct kunai?
lamelitersniper, that is a horrible return. you have to be aiming for at least double your money.
Most people have better things to do with their time than driving all over town between BB and GS trying to save a few $'s. I for one love deals where I can buy a game online knowing that I'll get at or above the value at BB. I have mainly been using my BB credit for 360 and Wii points, so I'm happy as long as I can cover tax with a trade in.

I'd be all over Big Game Hunter if I wasn't already in the middle of Timeshift with copies of MUA and Spiderwick arriving shortly.
