2005 Update
This year we collected over $2400 from the CAG Community. In addition, CAG Productions threw in $500 towards Penny-Arcade's Charity Dinner (which went on to raise $87,000) and another $400+ so that we could afford to buy each of the 18 US hospitals a Nintendo DS Mario Kart Bundle (pics).

Thanks to all the CAGs who contributed to this years effort.

-------------------------
Last year, we raised over $2000 for Penny Arcade's Child's Play Charity, with just over $1500 from the CAG community, and a $500 donation from CAG Productions. Frankly, I was disappointed with last year's showing.
I know we can do better this year.

Child's Play's goal is to bring new video games and toys to sick children at several children's hospitals across North America and the UK. I really admire the the job that the Penny Arcade guys do with this, so I think that those of us who can, should do something to help their charity.

How the CAG community can help Child's Play:

:arrow:Contribute to the CAG Community Fund!
Money raised through the fund will be used to buy games/systems off of the hospitals' wish lists. The fund will likely be closed around December 10th.
You can track our progress through the above link too
!
Note: Amazon will only accept $50 at a time. If you want to give more than $50, simply give multiple gifts!
Also, I have the minumum donation set to $4 as I have to pay fees on every donation. The PA crew is looking to get those fees waived, in which case, I will remove the $5 minimum donation. I'm sure you guys can come up with at least $5 anyway.

I think this a fun and easy way for us to do a little bit of good this holiday season.
I'll be making a donation in the name of CAG, I hope you will join me.

I was wondering when this was going to start up again. Let's try and exceed last years totals people. I know I'll be giving again so hopefully some other CAGs will too!

Great cause!! :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

Thank you for your generousity!
Don't worry about the fees... its 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, so your 2x$50 donation was only an extra thirty cents in fees. The Penny Arcade crew is looking into getting the fees removed anyway.
When's the deadline for donations?
They want the gifts to be at the hospital by December 20th, so I'll likely stop taking donations around December 10th.
I'll do it again, but I might want to wait till someone wants to double the donations again.
Don't necessarily count on that to happen again. Last year, that was done to light a fire under the ass of CAG cause donations were rather lackluster for a while. You shouldn't donate just because someone is doubling it. You should donate because it's a great cause. It may happen again, but don't let your donation ride on that.
this should really be on the front page
Yes it should! :D

Of course it will be on the front page!
I will keep the pay box (located btw latest msg board posts) until the end and I will write up a post as well...but first, I sleep! Gnight!

Buy a new game/toy from the hospitals' Amazon Wish Lists:

so we cant donate old games we have no use for this year... when i say older i dont mean used I mean like games we got during sales early this year... I got

Golden nugget from Best buy sale Still sealed i probally never open

and got like

Ford mustang xbox again from the BB sale sealed never opened

or

xevious gba or whatever its call i neveropened

so we cant just donate any games we want this year (im too lazy to read though the whole list)

I'll have to donate something when I get my next paycheck... I remember going to a Children's Hospital a couple years ago... there were 2-3 crappy looking N64s with Mario, and I think ans SNES with Donkey Kong Country. And that was it. Very sad...

got another question

If you donate money is that considered a Cash advance or a normal credit card purchase... I opened up a horse racing account and i thought it was just a normal credit card charge... Boy did i find out i was wrong.. They billed it as a cash advance and belive me you dont want to get one of those on a Credit card that you carry a balance on. you have to overpay the credit card just to get the card paid off since they jack on interest every day
Have you considered making CAG a corporate sponsor?
Last year we got our name on the list, I'm hoping to do it again this year as well.

That's really sad. I sent in a copy of The Incredibles since I thought they might be able to make better use out of DVDs.

cmon people...ive been watching it since i got home 6 hours ago and it hasnt went up at all...i made a small contribution a few mins ago for now but do plan on making more as time goes by

I worked at a psych hospital for trouble kids and all they had was a genesis and that was like 2 years ago.

A good spot for this on the frontpage would be that green bar that used to be across the top, or in that "top picks" section... The graphic isn't always there for me, and it could be adblocked unintentionally.

Thanks for the info, CheapyD. I like the inclusion of the Amazon wishlists. It makes it a bit more interesting than just donating. Now I know some lucky guy or gal will be receiving a copy of Usher's Confessions CD!

Okay, I'm not THAT cheap and will do better than that!

im still waiting till someone can answer this

is the thing considered a normal Credit card charge
or
Is the thing considered a cash advance

when you dontate money to that place

I'm sure its just a normal credit card charge.
Cash advances are when you take out cash at an ATM with your credit card.

if you have a paypal account you can link up your checking account with it and its like writing a check so you dont get charged a fee

If you have old systems or games instead of cash, contact your local (or nearest) children's hospital. They may not want it because it is used, but I know the Ronald McDonald Houses will gladly take them. I donated my PS last year with a few games and they were estatic. Just call them up and ask.

I just gave $20, sadly only 10 people on this site have gave something so far. Actually less than that because Dude did it twice he said. Hopefully more people will open their pockets and give at least the $5 minimum. For as many people as come here that would add up fast!

not really i signed up for an online horse racing thing and deposit 25 bucks and the credit card company took it as a cash advance .. maybe cause it was a betting service i have no clue.. but those are a pain the ass to get off your credit card cause it gains interest every day meaning you have to overpay the credit card just to pay it off

i probally do it either way... when does this end cause i probally wont be able to get it done till around dec 1

I donated last night, I just checked my account online and it processed just like a normal credit card charge. If you are still paranoid just buy something off Amazon.com and have it shipped to them as a gift. Either way it's process as a normal credit card charge.............

That is sad but it hasn't been up for that long. I will be donating eventually. No worries on that front. I hope that the 360 launch isn't resulting in shallower pockets this year. Hopefully more people will donate in the coming weeks.

I don't really see the point in donating to a CAG fund instead of directly to Child's Play. Seems really pointless, no reason to have a middleman.

If you donate to the CAG fund, you will know exactly what your money bought when I post the list of purchsed items.
Not so, if you just paypal money to PA.
The CAGs will also have a say in what items are purchased.

Also, those who might be inclined to give small donation might be better incented to do so, knowing their money will be used for larger purchases, rather than not knowing at all where it will go.

Speaking of not seeing the point, what was your point in posting that?
Are you trying to dissuade people from donating?
Your last name wouldn't happen to be Scrooge, would it?

I disagree entirely. I still don't see any advantage to a middleman "CAG fund."

I see incentives for you, and that's really where it ends. That's why I post it, that was my "point." A CAG donation (you're disappointed with 2 grand? I guess that's why I'm disgruntled in the first place) gets publicity for CAG, which generates traffic, which in-turn increases your personal revenue from corporate affiliations.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you're doing this for personal benefit, but I am saying that a CAG fund only benefits you. It's great to spread the word, but pointless to have a (temporarily) seperate fund.

A CAG could donate directly to PA and still have their money spent on larger items. They could still have influence on what's purchased. They still see lists and pictures of what's purchased -- in much greater detail, albeit on a grander scale. There's no positive aspect of a CAG fund other than CAG publicity, back full circle to only being a benefit to you personally.

I donated to CP, and I encourage all to do so, I just see it as extremely pointless to donate to a seperate fund if the only difference is that your name (or URL, rather) is on the lump sum when handed over to its final destination.

I suppose I'm mostly bitter due to the changes in the site I've seen over the past year. Last year I was glad to support CAG, get their name on the CP corporate sponsor page, because I was satisfied with the information you provided on your site. Since then things have changed, which I won't exactly get in to since it's off topic.

In short, this 'fund' just seems either pointless or greedy, depending on your motive (or rather, whether or not you have a motive.)

Sounds like your general pettiness against CAG more than anything else.

Dudes been on here 2 years and only posted 6 times. I think the CAG fund is a good idea just because a lot of us like to see what this web site is capable of sometimes. I persoanlly like to funnel my donation money into what we do at work. We have a program called Santas in Blue and either individuals or offices take on disadvanatge childrens wish lists. It's really cool going out and shopping and being able to hand your gift out in person during the gift giving party. Our base donates almost as much as the local community and we are like one fourth the size. That said I threw in a small amount
