The Digital Future And Our Gems

Late into this gen I've been pushing into more digital purchases due to sales, PS Plus, and convenience. In some cases I've sold off the disc versions of some games and have gotten them digitally when it worked out in my favor. Now I don't keep many games at all but I have a handful of physical games that I've held on to (my gems).

So like most wonder, what happens with digital only games? Download them to the system and hope the hard drive never crashes? I'm sure a lot of games will carry over moving forward but what about the ones that don't?

Some games aren't available due to licensing issues. I'm sure that will also be an issue in the future. A part of me is like well I'll just keep a physical version of whatever gem I deem worthy but another part of me is like why fight the inevitable digital future?

My copy of Spider-Man 1 on PS1 is wondering what to do next.

I guess the issue really came up too when I thought about getting Ninja Gaiden Black ( a gem of mine) digitally and selling off my disc copy. My thought process was like clear the shelf, have it digitally and if I ever need to, just buy it again physically.

Anyone else conflicted this way?

Yeah, I'm kind of conflicted as well.  I don't see my PS3/360 living as long as my Sega Genesis and NES.  I'm going to miss all the PS+ games that I have from the Instant Game Collection, when I have that nostalgic feeling 20 years from now to play them again.

I previously thought this way (but more about saving money than saving shelf space) but when the Xbox One announced its DRM it was a wake up call. If we support digital distribution then in the future things won't be available physically.

When it comes to digital items the content providers can stop anyone from ever playing them again at any time, so I am no longer buying anything digitally.

It's all Doom & Gloom, don't support digital! :)

They pull games off XBLA/PSN all the time when the license is up and don't want to renew, or can't since the company doesn't exist anymore or other legal reasons. You can still DL them if on DL list, but for how long (this question goes for EVERY game)? Moving forward your digital library will be not supported on new consoles, why support that ecosystem? A misguided ban and you lose everything forever, or a big hassle with CS to get unbanned. Are $10 Day 1 discounts enough to justify a digital purchase that you cannot ever resell? Well here is one hint: they don't even give a $10 discount yet, it's full price. Split the cost with a friend does sound good, but the rules of gamer tag sharing are still not well defined and will evolve fast over the next few years.

Look at the digital versions of PS2 Classics of Grand Theft Auto III/Vice City/San Andreas. They had to remove music/etc just to list it for sale on PSN. Complications like this are stupid and may even ruin the "original" game.

Half joking, but Netflix pulled a TV series off while I was in the middle of watching it, and hasn't put it back up in a year+. fuck
