The end of split screens?

I hate split screens, but yeah, it's the cheapest way to play local co-op (another screen requires another console and game). So, i was reading this on Engadget and it's pretty cool!

http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/20/sony-stereoscopic-screen-sharing-patent-puts-two-players-on-one/

After that last bummer, where Sony applied for a patent "feature erosion" in game demos, we're glad to see the company come up with something positive for the gamers among us. Two recent patent apps, titled "Stereoscopic Screen Sharing Method and Apparatus Patent" and "3D Shutter Glasses with Mode Switching Based on Orientation to Display Device," detail the use of stereoscopic 3D technology to let two individual players see different information on the same screen (you might remember that Microsoft has also been working on something similar). Not only that, but the glasses could have earbuds -- for separate audio feeds. Of course, you'd need a 3D display for this to work, and you'd need to wear those silly glasses -- but that's a small price to pay to get rid of the ol' split screen, don't you think? I love local co-op--split screen or otherwise. Much more fun playing with a friend in the same room, pounding some good beers and gaming into the Wii hours than playing online IMO. Even compared to playing online with the same friend.

So I' be sad to see local, split screen modes die off, but would be fine if something like the above replaces it and offers a better experience. Though I'm still hesitant on that specific technology as I'm really not into this 3-D fad and don't have much interest in buying a 3D TV. Especially if it requires glasses.

Oh sorry, the title is a bit too much... I shouldn't say "the end of split screen" i should say "Alternative to split screen."

The problem with split screen is that players share the main screen. In competitive mode, that's fine, but if you're playing against each other, it's no good (cheating).

Anyhow, the issue with split screen for most people is "sharing the screen," it's annoying!

With the glasses workaround, players are looking at the entire screen (there's no need for splits). You can still poke/yell/kick/high five the player next to you

Competitive is playing against each other.

It's not cheating per se since both players have the same advantage of being able to see the other's screen.

It may lessen the experience, but I wouldn't call it cheating since it's still a level playing field.

LCDs have dropped so much in price that the cost of additional screens, plus extra consoles, and multiple copies of the same game is still far under the entry price of 3D sets with an extra pair of glasses. The 3D gaming consoles of tomorrow aren't even in mass production; let alone the entry price.

Home theatre 3D is a novelty for the extravagant. Adoption nil.

Yeah, I don't see home 3D catching on until some future point where there are no glasses needed (and no severely limited angles which is the case for current no glasses needed displays where you have to look straight on) and costs come way down.

Too many people only recently upgraded to HD (and many still haven't) to rush out to buy a new TV that can do 3D and take advantage of a very limited amount of 3D content.

Some of my greatest memories of gaming are playing against friends in split screen, especially Goldeneye. I've never really had much of a problem with it.

Same here. If nothing else it makes camping a non issue and makes things more hectic since everyone knows where everyone is.

At first I thought perhaps Sony had come up with a way for people to play co-op games locally without doing the split screen thing, but after skimming that article that was linked this is just so Sony can whore out their shitty 3-D tv garbage some more. What about people who only have an LCD, plasma or LED tv without 3-D support, Sony?

I have never understood why the hell co-op multiplayer played in the same room and on the same system with friends cannot just be one big screen and ONLY go split when one of the people playing falls behind everyone else.

It does now. That's exactly what the new LEGO games do (Indy 2 & Harry Potter). Hopefully it becomes the new standard.

I don't know why you guys talking about 3D here... Yes, the idea looks like or rather comes from 3D technology, but it's a different thing. Putting on the glasses allow you to see what your screen looks like. The other player's glasses allow him/her to see what his/her screen looks like. So, in essence, both players are seeing their own screen, with the glasses.

Anyway, if you look at this patent in a different way... It could take gaming to a whole new level. That's right, games come with such glasses allow you see both screens with commands from the controller. Imagine solving puzzles in dual dimensions... Like a box can be moved in layer one to activate something in layer two (which you can't see in layer one). I know this is already done (Batman AA's detective mode comes to mind), but if you think about it, it's NOT really the same thing...

Anyway, maybe i should put it in a way people can easily understand...

Two consoles, two copies of the game, two monitors - each player has it's own bed and own "partner" to have sex with.

Two monitors gaming locally (one console)- it's like both players having sex with one "partner" on two beds.

Split screen (one monitor locally) - having sex with one "partner" on one bed (two players, yuk)

New glasses technology (one monitor, one console) - same as the first one, less mess :) (technically it's same as one "partner" and one bed, but the experience is two "partners" on two beds, okay, the players required to wear condoms).

I don't understand how this is big news. When the active 3D glasses technology was starting to get popular about 3-4 years ago this was one of the advantages that was discussed. Mainly in regards to playing football games so that you were always on the proper side of the field, and no one could see you picking your plays.

I guess it's not big news, it just hit me that the 3D technology can used in different ways. And you're absolutely correct and the sport games on the same screen! Not only limited to picking plays and such, but now the players don't need to rotate, like playing ping pong, tennis or volleyball. Or better yet, left or right side when playing Street Fighter (some people are stronger on one particular side, they need to jump to the other side and some times you can stop them and beat them just by preventing them from going to the other side).

It wasn't directing that at you. I was just confused to see this getting posted on all of the major news outlets this week. Sometimes I start to feel like I'm psychic or something- because these outlets are constantly retreading old information.
