The Fabulous Moolah
July 22, 1923 - November 2nd, 2007 (84 years old)

The Fabulous Moolah (real name: Lillian Ellison) was born in Tookiedoo, South Carolina, the only daughter in a family with 14 children. Her mother died at age 8. Her father took her to wrestling matches to try to cheer her up, and Ellison began idolizing the dominant women's wrestler at that time, Mildred Burke. Moolah set out for a wrestling career at the age of 16.

She debuted as "Slave Girl Moolah" in a promotion ran by Billy Wolfe, husband of Midred Burke. She was the valet for Elephant Boy (Tony Olivias). She was also a valet for "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers in the early 50s. She won the vacant women's world title on September 18, 1956 after defeating Judy Grable in a 13 woman battle royal.

Moolah's first world title reign lasted over ten years (John Cena's got nothin' on her). She befriended Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Hank Williams, the latter of which she dated a year following a divorce. She opened a women's wrestling school in the 60s. Moolah dropped her belt in September 17, 1966 to Betty Boucher, but she regained it a few weeks later. She was defeated in 1984 by Wendi Richter, which was broadcast live on MTV.

Richter's relationship soured with WWF. Moolah put on a mask and called herself the "Spider Lady". The "Spider Lady" beat Richter on November 25th, 1985, in a screwjob finish, not unlike the Michaels/Hart screwjob. Richter was never told she was losing the title. Richter unmasked the "Spider Lady" to reveal Fabulous Moolah. Richter promptly quit WWF after this match.

Moolah held the belt for another two years. Sherri Martel defeated her in July of 1987. After the loss to Sherri, she retired from full time competition. When wrestling regained popularity in the late 90s, Moolah returned with another "lady legend", Mae Young. Moolah defeated the WWF Women's Champion Ivory on September 27th, 1999, making her the oldest WWF Women's Champion. Ivory regained the title 8 days later.

On her 80th birthday, Moolah defeated Victoria in a match. "The Legend Killer" Randy Orton gave her an RKO after the match. Moolah and Mae continued to appear in various comedic roles in the WWE up until this day.

As much of a downer as her passing is, I'm glad a pro wrestler managed to live beyond the average US life expectancy for a change.

Seriously. In wrestling years, Moolah was around 160 years old, which is really sad.

What the shit? She's dead? Well damn

That would be the reason for a "memorial wrestling topic" :dunce:

I think there was too many words beginning with "M" so I just kinda zoned out the memorial part at first...

Considering most wrestlers die in their 40s, that's actually a pretty appropriate response.

R.I.P. Moolah. I'll always remember your Wrestlemania 2 match that only lasted 60 seconds because Velvet Mcintyre's tits flopped out.

I do love the botchmanias. I'm actually suprised to see such recent matches as the Monster Mash and Cyber Sunday stuff in there, though, that Monster Mash battle royal could have been a botchmania in itself.

Recently watched Lipstick and Dynamite, it's a great documentary on Ladies wrestling. Moolah always entertained me.

The raven part of botchmania reminded me of this one time HHH's mic was not broadcasting in the arena, but it was at home, so there were several uncomfortable seconds of "Hello Hello HELLO HELLO!!" coming through the TV.

I was going to ask if they had included that yet, but since there are 30 of those videos I just figured no one has memorized them and didn't bother to ask.

That "HELLO HELLO HELLO HELLO ::tap tap tap:: HELLO HELLO HELLO" promo (which must have been 2 minutes long, if not longer) was the most surreal promo I've ever seen. Not just taken by itself, but I remember being about 80% asleep while it was starting...then I was awoken by his voice just saying "HELLO" over and over. I thought I was dreaming at first.

Strangely enough, I had fallen asleep with Raw on the TV, and woke up to the HELLOHELLOHELLO, too. I was too groggy to realize that it was minutes, not seconds... wow. You'da thunk that they'd have tried a different mic, or cut to a promo, or something, had it really gone THAT long.

ROH Glory By Honor Night 2 IMPRESSIONS!

MISAWA fuckING DELIVERED! He DELIVERED! Myke you should have seen it man. Misawa was ON! The match started with some rest holds but the old man was hitting a suicide dive, a leap from the top rope face first into a knee, and taking the Go 2 Sleep. What a goddamn great match! Oh man!

Dragon/Morishima 3 was fantastic and had a great DQ ending when Dragon just started curb stomping Morishima's nuts. 'YOU'RE JUST GOT YOUR fuckING NUTS IN" chants for all!

The crowd was PISSED and chanting refund for a Double DQ finish in a match between the Briscoes and The Age of The Fall which ended up lasting in crowd heat for nearly 2 more segments including the tribute for referee Joe (I can't remember his last name) which was a goddamn shame. Briscoes ended up running out and in my opinion an impromptu match was setup between the Brisoces and The Age of The Fall.

This was easily the best ROH NYC show since Fifth Year Festival back in February and the best overall ROH show I've seen all year round. Crowd was insanely packed in and HOT. As someone on the ROH board put it -

#3 - The Noah main event...goddamn. The Old Man BROUGHT IT. He Packed IT in his bag, flew IT here with him, Showed a LITTLE bit of it in Philly, and then Promptly FOREARM'd IT into all of our faces in NYC. I cannot thank his Grumpy Ass enough for the experience."

I suggest everyone who is close-by attempt to make the ROH double shot in NYC at the end of December. I already got 2nd row seats for both shows. If you want to experience great wrestling - this will be your chance.

Finally met Nigel and gave him a movie to check out while he heals.. Awesome, awesome nice guy. :)

1) Chris Hero defeats El Generico in a good opener.

2) BJ Whitmer & Brent Albright defeat Kevin Steen & Delirious when BJ hit an exploder on Steen on a steel chair.

3) Austin Aries defeats Shane Hagadorn.

~After the match, Aries gets on the mic and announces he is disbanding the Resilience to focus on winning the ROH World Championship.

~Austin Aries will challenge Nigel McGuinness for the ROH World Championship at the next PPV taping in New York.

4) Claudio Castagnoli defeats Naomichi Marufuji.

5) The Age of the Fall vs The Briscoes goes about one minute, double DQ.

6) Tyler Black defeats Alex Payne.

~After the match The Briscoes run off Black and say they will defend the titles later tonight in a street fight.

7) Takeshi Morishima defeats Bryan Danielson by DQ when Danielson repeatedly curbstomps Morishima's NUTS.

~After the match Nigel comes out and gets kicked in the arm. Place goes crazy for Dragon.

8) The No Remorse Corp defeat The Vulture Squad when Evans taps to a SICK Roderick Strong Boston Crab.

~Larry Sweeney and Chris Hero came to the ring and announced that at the 12/29 PPV taping it would be Hero vs. Castagnoli. Sweeney said that it would if Castagnoli didn't win, he would be forced to leave Ring of Honor. Hero said earlier it was all fun and games but he's not happy because he should be the ROH champion because last night he made Nigel McGuinness tap out. He said ROH isn't fair because not only is he not champion but he's not even the top contender. He started beating on Bobby Dempsey out of frustration. The crowd chanted for Bobby so Hero kept beating him. Hero said that Austin Aries is supposedly the top contender, but he used to be a big deal in 2005. Compared to Hero, Aries is nothing and was the worst ROH champion of all time. Aries came out and said that Hero may have made Nigel tap out last night, but he was ROH champion. He said he earned his shot at the ROH title and he didn't have a real match tonight, so he challenges him. Larry Sweeney steps in and says if Hero wins, he gets Aries' title shot. Aries said he knew that was coming, so when he beats Hero, Sweeney has to agree to face Claudio Castagnoli at Final Battle on 12/30. The match starts.

9) Austin Aries defeats Chris Hero via submission.

10) Mitsuharu Misawa defeats KENTA to retain the GHC Championship with an Emerald Frosion in what was described as an awesome, awesome match.

11) Jay & Mark Briscoe defeat The Age Of The Fall to successfully retain the ROH World Tag Team Championships as we end Glory By Honor weekend.

_____________________

*Pro Wrestling NOAH Global Honored Crown champion Mitsuharu Misawa pinned KENTA in a really good match. Joe Higuchi read the championship declaration. Misawa looked his age but the crowd absolutely ate him up and made the atmosphere electric. They stiffed the hell out of each other with slaps and punches early. Misawa took over. KENTA came back with a flurry of strikes but was taken out. KENTA came back with a powerslam and lariat. He went for a springboard move but was knocked to the floor. Misawa hit his trademark forearm smash dive through the ropes. Misawa hit a Tiger Driver for a two count. He slmmed KENTA and went to the top but was cut off. They teased a Misawa Tiger Driver off the ropes but he knocked KENTA off. Misawa dove off the top but was caught with a knee. KENTA nailed a shining wizard and German suplex for a two count. He called for the GTS but Misawa fought him off. KENTA finally nailed him with the GTS for a two count and the place exploded, chanting NOAH. Misawahit the Emerald Frosion but only got a two count. KENTA caught him with a big dropkick. Misawa nailed him with the discus forearm for a two count. Misawa nailed another Emerald Frosion for the pin. The crowd loved it. KENTA rose Misawa's arm after the bell.

By the way Nicolas Cage was backstage at the ROH show last night in order to prepare for an acting role.

Really enjoyed both ROH shows this weekend. NYC show far more than Philly to the point I'm surprised it's even being debated.

The booking was really well done over the two nights, as they tied stuff together really well from Philly to NYC with alot of stuff leading to the big Dec NYC double shot.

Hero's use over the weekend was in particular, really something special. It's been said so much already, but the persona and act that he uses in ROH (and kiiinda started to devise while wrestling in NOAH last year) is better than any other Hero stuff currently anywhere else. It's 100% pure entertainment and he never ceases to generate heat. Add in the circus with Dempsey and Del Ray's stuff and Sweeney and you just got the best **** possible. I think everyone is WAAAY underrating Generico vs. Hero from tonight, which was just incredible. One of the best ROH opening matches ever that didn't need a million moves but just flat out engaged the people from start the finish. Hero and Sweeney interfering and stirring **** in between matches all weekend really was effective also in setting up the big Claudio vs. Sweeney asskicking coming up on the next PPV taping in NYC. PLUS, for the next year, Hero will do nothing but bitch and moan about how HE beat Nigel and the sneaky refs ripped him off, as he did in NYC tonight in starting beef with Aries over number 1 contender. Hero: "Austin Aries, you are soooo 2005, your title reign was the weakest since Xavier"

Misawa vs. KENTA, Claudio and Marufuji were really good as well and I swear to god, American Dragon vs. Morishima might have been the best match in the promotion's history. People see "DQ" and COMPLETELY miss the point if they weren't there. It was about as effective a dq as there has ever been. Story of the match with Danielson out for blood and just attacking Morishima at all costs before the bell with anything that wasn't nailed down ruled. Danielson, NOT NECRO, was by far the best brawler on this show. He was incredible. And the Morishima that showed up had sooo much more fire than he's ever had before based on the built in grudge this match had. Just an incredible spectacle. This match was a ****ing war and the crowd heat was Joe vs. Kobashi levels at several points.

Main event tag had about 17 things that were the sickest **** ever, but it was a shame that the crowd competely burnt out. I get the idea of building up to the match early in the show, but in hindsight, maybe closing with Misawa would have been best. It was just a flat match... Got to feel bad for Necro, Jimmy and Mark Briscoe who all took some incredibly psycho bumps in this thing, but aside from OOHs and Ahhhs, really just a tame atmosphere.

KENTA and Marufuji were both absolutely awesome all weekend. Marufuji in particular completely knows how to work a US crowd at this stage. His interactions on both nights with the fans were really good.

But yeah, HERO and the way he's used really was the big story this weekend. People bitching about him losing don't realize how great fans are taking to the SnS Inc story as far as heat is concerned. He and SnS Inc are clearly the top pushed act in ROH.

Wow can't believe she died.

That Botchmania was awesome. Sucks to be in Raven's shoes at that point.

Dragon/Morishima could headline Wrestlemania. Those 2 gel like Bret Hart/Stone Cold.

I can't wait to see Dragon/Morishima IV!
So much chemistry!

Full Impact Pro has booked a show for Wrestlemania weekend in Miami. This means that both Ring Of Honor and Full Impact are running the same weekend as Wrestlemania.

Mick Foley opened an eBay store. He's selling a lot of things, including his Slammy, a few autographed shirts, and a bloody one he wore at Summerslam. Link - http://stores.ebay.com/MICK-FOLEY-WRESTLING-STORE
And since I forgot to mention - Misawa threw his jacket away into the audience. :)
Well, satin jackets are back in style, I suppose.

Mick Foley sold his CAR on ebay once. In fact, the auction said if you were within (x) amount of miles and won, he would drive it to your home.

What was REALLY awesome though, was seeing what he had bought in the past. He picked up some Bloussant (Google it) for Colette. Or maybe himself, I dunno.

Wow, been helping a friend move over the weekend, so I completely missed the Fabulous Moolah passing. That is sad. I thought the comedy moments were a bit overdone on tv, but still, amazing that they could work and do what they did at their age.

Any word on what sort of tv tribute Fabulous will get? She was on tv (even though not regularly) a few times over the past few years. I would assume she would get a few minute video tribute. She deserves more than the 5 second picture at the beginning of the show.

I bet the WWE is waiting for confirmation that there isn't any kind of scandal involved with the passing of Moolah.
how did Mae Young out live Moolah?
The same way Terry Funk kept wrestling longer than Mick Foley.

Yeah we got the occasional "special attraction" match out of Foley, but Funk's been way more active and that's just insane!
