The greatest comedy films ever
American Pie before Some Like it Hot? Please...Some Like it Hot is the best comedy of all time.
Yeah, not a particularly great list, IMO. But I'd still put Some Like It Hot behind Dr. Strangelove and This Is Spinal Tap. I'd also put Groundhog Day up there (though not in front of Some Like It Hot).

Monty Python/Grail
Office Space
Tommy Boy
Emperor's New Groove (yea yea)
Sword in the Stone (cracks me up everytime)
A Christmas Story

I'll have to think up more later.

I don't think Some like it Hot would even make my top 10 list
I fail to see how Bad Santa doesn't make the list.
I'm hearing you there. That should be in the top 50. another one that i just thought of is an older flick early 70's I think called the "Groove Tube" Anyone see that one?
Have you people SEEN The Big Lebowski?!
No, but I've always wondered what it was about. TO GOOGLE I GO!

Here is my list. Not in any specific order:

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Spaceballs
Office Space
Super Troopers
Harlem Nights (It is a classic)
Trading Places
Beverly Hills Cop 1
Austin Powers
Happy Gilmore

These just make me laugh everytime I watch them so they would be my greatest of all time

that list really sucks imo.

american pie, i didnt laugh at once. oh he just creamed his pants. funny :|
something about mary, its alright, but it should NOT be in the top 5.
the man with two brains????? ABOVE the jerk????? the man with two brains is freakin' weak. shouldnt even be in the top 50, maybe 500.

also why the heck is pulp fiction up there??? its a dark comedy but its more of an action/drama/comedy than just a "comedy"... i dunno.

*ahem*

That's...Frahnk-en-steen

apparently many of them have not. but i have, and i understand how you feel.

i'd throw in dr. strangelove and this is spinal tap. i'd also throw in the royal tenenbaums, as i think it's wes anderson's best work (though i find it only slightly more enjoyable than rushmore). i also really enjoyed the south park movie, though i may catch some flack for that. i also think clerks deserves mention.

and finally, i'd like to mention dirty work. it's certainly not the one of funniest movies ever, and it may not even be one of the funniest movies of the '90s, but it is still very funny for what it is and totally underrated.

Going through my collection ...

American Beauty
Army of Darkness
Better Off Dead
Clerks
Dogma
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Fight Club
Grosse Pointe Blank
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Monty Python's Life of Brian
Office Space
Young Frankenstein

I know a few of them might not be pure comedies, but I don't care.

You're right, he's totally doin' that dog.

Lebowski is indeed one of the greats, but on that note don't forget another of the Coen Bros. wonderful creations, and in my opinion Nic Cage's greatest work...

Raising Arizona

The Man Who Wasn't There is another of their films that while not really a comedy, I found Ed the Barber to be a hilarious character...also of note in the film...Miss Johansson herself...

EDIT: spelling fix...

I don't think I can count the number of times I've actually seen Raising Arizona. It's one of those numbers with a ridiculous prefix that, when you first hear it, makes you think it's not even real.

19. National Lampoon's Animal House!?!?! this should be in the top 3 if not #1!!!

4. There's Something About Mary WTF this should not even be on the list let alone so high.

6. American Pie (see above) this is on the list but Porky's is not!?!?

1. Monty Python's Life of Brian & 5. Monty Python and the Holy Grail should switch places but make HG #2 after Animal House

7. Groundhog Day there is no god

8. Some Like it Hot Why does this movie get so much love?? I found it had a few chuckles but it is allways on the top comedy lists.

10. Planes, Trains and Automobiles Should be higher

18. Pulp Fiction Great Flick but should not be on the comedy list.

24. Dr Strangelove 24?? this should had made the top 10

46. National Lampoon's Vacation Should had made the top 20

Where is Uncle Buck and 1941?!?!?!
Crap list but a good read (but every list I read will be crap because everyone has different opinions.) ;)

Ferris Bueller's Day Off would probably at the top of my personal list, and I'd put Clifford with Martin Short in the #2 position. A couple of others that I don't quite rank as high as those two but still get me laughing every time I watch are Strictly Ballroom and About a Boy.

I just thought of one that is definately on my top 10 list

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World. Theres gotta be some love for that flick. a few more I just thought of Easy Money, Throw Momma from the train, Down and Out in Beverley Hills.

Ok well in actual terms of comedy with my lungs hurting till they hurt for the longest duration of time then that would be Jackass the Movie. If comedy is defined as like i said hardest and longest laughs then that one would be the winner. Im know im gonna get alot of beef but still its the truth.

Dirty Work (most underrated movie of all time)
almost all of Kevin Smith's films
Tommy Boy
Army of Darkness (you can see the rope)
and others listed by previous posters.
Wow, I'm gonna have to go out and buy a fuck-ton of movies after reading this thread.
Do yourself a favor and buy Dirty Work, its my favorite comdey of all time and its damn cheap (or rent it). Also i forgot about Joe Dirt, iwatched that three times the first day that i rented it, hilarious. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back had the same effect. Does Jackass The Movie count as a comedy film, thats awesome too.

THANK YOU...someone beat me to it!! Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is absolutely fantastic. Its got like every star in Hollywood in it during the 50's and early 60's. Oh sure there's no teenage bimbos in it pretending to act, and there's no spooging-in-your-pants humor, but seeing Buddy Hackett trying to fly that plane while Mickey Rooney is screaming at him, all the while in the background you see poor ol Mr. Howell getting slammed back and forth.....ROFL. Sorry, you had to be there ;)

I grew up seeing this movie (cut down to 2 hours) on saturday afternoon TV and have loved it ever since. The DVD release is fantastic.

Kentucky Fried Movie gets my vote for greatest Comedy of all time though..bar none....it cannot be topped. Well maybe Hardware Wars, but thats a short-film ;)

Spaceballs
Three Amigos
Robinhood: Men in Tights:rofl::rofl:!
Blazing Saddles

Big Trouble (Tim Allen, not Kurt Russel)
Ice Age
Three to Tango
So I Married an Axe Murderer
Anger Management
Bubba Hotep
100 Girls
All the Queens Men (And anything else with Eddie Izzard)
Clerks
The Whole 9 and 10 Yards

Galaxy Quest
Johnny Dangerously
Hot Shots 2
Joe Somebody
Van Wilder

I got sick of looking... the bolded ones are the funniest. The Princess Bride wasn't a great comedy, but it is a fucking awesome movie.
