the grudge

CAGiversary!
What did you think of the grudge? I went to see it yesterday, and it didn't make much sense to me until towards the end of the film when everything became much clearer. (I don't want to comment too much and give away spoilers.)

I really liked it. Probably one of the best movies I've seen all year. The only thing I had a problem with was the way they brought out what happened in the past without cluing you in. For a while it got confusing trying to piece the timeline together. Otherwise everything worked nicely.

I did not have any problems with the flashbacks, unlike with Hero. Half the fucking movie (Hero) wasn't even REAL flashbacks; they were fucking fake!

And I liked The Grudge. Very creepy without being scary, which is pretty neat, like SH or something.

I was wondering about this movie. THe critics roasted this film but you guys seemed to like it.

Any CAGS hate this movie?
The critics hate everything, don't listen to them.
I agree with critics sometimes - especially when they roast those Adam Sandler movies. Yeech!

the critics are for the most part right, i find. I dont like teenie bopper movies and cliche adam sandler movies (i havent seen Grudge yet though) and these days, at age 23 i enjoy more artful movies instead of explosions and stupid stuff rolled into a movie reel.

Maybe i'm just more intelligent than the average movie viewer. I still like shallow, less filling movies if i'm in a certain mood, but i can only take so much Van Wilder, Billy Madison, Day After Tomorrow, etc. Give me more Taxi Driver, Adaptation, Punch Drunk Love, Bowling for Columbie, Beautiful Mind, Mystic River, etc. etc. Not all the movies that make it to the Oscars i like (i hate musicals) but the bad movies always make more money because people are cattle and like to watch/eat hay.

I'm a lot alike Kelegacy. 21, and go for the more arty movies with substance. Except, I thought Mystic River was trash, haha.

Anyways, I saw this movie today, and, I completly agree with the critics. Very mediocre. Was creepy, for sure, but had little to no story of consequence. Anyways, its still worth a viewing, but, I dont think id have a problem with never seeing it again.

I saw it yesterday, and I was dissapointed to an extent. Because it was "Americanized", they were explaining things too much (or trying to at least) instead of just leaving them as unexplainable occurances like the original japanese version.

That is why I like Japanese horror... it seems that American horror movies take all of their viewers as idiots.

I'm hopefully going to see it tomorrow.

I've seen all 4 of the Japanese Juon films (two made-for-TV/straight-to-video movies, and two theatrical movies) and I loved 'em.

I'm kinda worried that the American one will ruin some of the mystery but then again it is the same director....

In three simple words: This Movie Blew.

This was easily one of the cheesiest horror movies I've seen in a long time. In fact, it was so cheesy, it almost felt as if I was watching Scary Movie 4 throughout half of the movie.

I'll admit I jumped at a couple of parts, but there's only so many supernatural noises and chubby Japanese faces that can startle you before you start to laugh.

If "The Ring" and "House On Haunted Hill" had a child with down syndrome, they would probably name it "The Grudge."

Yeah, I'm 15 and some of the movies my friends like are just utter garbage. I'm surprised you didn't like Mystic Riever, I thought the acting was great. I dunno, I am a professional actor so maybe that's why I like more mature(not American Pie "mature" I mean mystic river mature) movies but I just can't take the crap that is being pumped out these days.

Remember how Japan didn't release the "real" Super Mario Bros. 2 game in America because they thought it was too challenging for us... (is this even the true story btw?)

Well true or not, that's pretty much what Takashi Shimuzu unfortunately did...

No it is Super Mario Bros. 2.

Yeah they never released the real mario bros. 2 for the NES. The lost levels is the same thing as Mario 2 in japan. The game we know as mario 2 was actually a game that was called Doki Doki Panic. I featured none of the mario characters and had nothing to do with mario. At the time they thought mario 2 was indeed too challenging for US gamers and instead released Doki Doki Panic but placed in mario characters as opposed to the generic ones that were in the original game. Our mario 2 was then later released in Japan under the title Super Mario USA.
Ha, xDZx is watching it right now. My b/f wants me to see it with him, but I'm a wuss.
Ha, indeed I was.

:D. I don't know about you guys but damn, I thought this movie was great. SMG didn't piss me off as much as I expected her to. I'm just thinking of making that sound that they do in school, and in public. :)

I wouldnt say this movie sucked, but it sure wasnt scary.
It was entertaining enough to keep my attention, but I would never watch it again....It felt like a rip off of The Ring. ( Which was better IMO )

Having seen the Grudge this past friday I must say, I was a bit disappointed...maybe it was the hype, I dunno but I guess I thought that this would be more scary than the japanese version... while the CGI was certainly better, the atmosphere and pacing of the US version just doesn't quite compare to the morbid and grim maliciousness of the japanese version. They pretty much showed everything in the US version but what made the japanese version outstanding is the fact that all the death scenes weren't overtly graphic - you had to use your imagination (which I think can create scarier scenarios than anything a director can make). If someone ran into the 'grudge' you saw it close in and then quick cut to black. While the US one was similiar, they still ended up showing graphic results of being 'grudged' as opposed to letting them simply vanish while your mind creates hellish scenarios as to what could have possibly occurred.

7/10 stars

Solid scare flick but don't expect it to be any better than the trailers

Haven't seen this one, but the Japanese film Ju On that it was based on was probably the scariest/freakiest movie I've ever seen. The Japanese Ringu was far superior to the Ring, so I didn't really bother with the US version of the Grudge. I am curious whether more questions will be answered by the remake. Ju On was huge on scares, but not so big on plot. I don't mind a mystery, or some unanswered questions, but that's different then just not having a story at all, or not explaining enough to even draw any conclusion from. If anyone who has seen Ju On wants to offer some theories, I'd love to hear them...

Well, the US version did shed some light as to the actual events in the first Juon... if they're maintaining continuity, then how the kid died, why he is always meowing, how the wife died and how the husband died are all shown.

The movie sucked, all of the scary stuff was in the commercials. I would have been pissed if I payed full price for the ticket. I wouldnt ever watch it again.

I really want to see it b/c I'm a fan of Buffy and I heard it was good. My friends say it is the scariest movie they've ever seen.

lemme just say first... i kind of enjoyed watching this movie. LOTS of scary moments. i wouldn't have a problem recommending to a friend at least a rental on this one.

now on to the criticism...

for the most part, yeah, this movie sucked. when you're looking at what was scary about the movie, you're pretty much limited to those surprise "cheapshots" at the audience. nothing was scary about this movie, except certain images and the 2 minutes building up to those images. and there are LOTS of these moments. it was like one of those haunted houses that high school kids pay 10 bucks to go into for cheap scares.

that part didn't piss me off so much, as much as how a lot of the movie didn't tie together or make any sense. for a second, forget this movie was a horror flick, and think about the plot. what the hell does it all mean? i'm not searching for any deep message in this movie, but what the hell?

SPOILERS

for example, why the hell does the ghost pick sarah michelle gellar in particular to have it's revelation of why the grudge is happening? what was so special about her? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. that's why it made no sense. she had no relationship with any of them, she had no outstanding personality traits that would even make you consider her as a protagonist in ANY situation... this, to me, should have been at least a prominent part of the story, just for relevency... you could have put shaquille o'neal in place of smg, and you would still have the same movie. you could have put a cgi-animated stick figure, and it would be the same shit.

but yeah. lots of cheap scary images/moments. so watch it, if you like that kind of stuff, cuz it's still kinda fun. but don't expect any resonating fear when you walk out of the theater, and don't expect any sense of meaning or continuity. most of the conversation about this movie will be "damn, remember when *insertscaryfigurehere* came out?"

and YES, i know this was an american remake of ju-on, and yes i know the japanese versions made a lot more sense and were tied together a lot better, but i'm not talking about the japanese versions here. a good movie is a good movie if you don't have to refer to other versions of it.

AND while i'm at it... i saw both ringu and the ring (saw ringu first long before i saw the ring), and the ring definitely was the better movie. but it SHOULD be this way anyway, because the ring was built on an existing good horror movie, and could improve/adjust from the original.
I'm just going to borrow the original version from a friend. SMG is an ugly whore and I'd rather not pay to see a movie with her in it.
Wow. I think shes pretty hot in Cruel Intentions with dark hair instead of her usual blond. And Selma Blair used to be hot before she cut her hair. Now she looks like a waif-crack whore.
