lemme just say first... i kind of enjoyed watching this movie. LOTS of scary moments. i wouldn't have a problem recommending to a friend at least a rental on this one.
now on to the criticism...
for the most part, yeah, this movie sucked. when you're looking at what was scary about the movie, you're pretty much limited to those surprise "cheapshots" at the audience. nothing was scary about this movie, except certain images and the 2 minutes building up to those images. and there are LOTS of these moments. it was like one of those haunted houses that high school kids pay 10 bucks to go into for cheap scares.
that part didn't piss me off so much, as much as how a lot of the movie didn't tie together or make any sense. for a second, forget this movie was a horror flick, and think about the plot. what the hell does it all mean? i'm not searching for any deep message in this movie, but what the hell?
SPOILERS
for example, why the hell does the ghost pick sarah michelle gellar in particular to have it's revelation of why the grudge is happening? what was so special about her? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. that's why it made no sense. she had no relationship with any of them, she had no outstanding personality traits that would even make you consider her as a protagonist in ANY situation... this, to me, should have been at least a prominent part of the story, just for relevency... you could have put shaquille o'neal in place of smg, and you would still have the same movie. you could have put a cgi-animated stick figure, and it would be the same shit.
but yeah. lots of cheap scary images/moments. so watch it, if you like that kind of stuff, cuz it's still kinda fun. but don't expect any resonating fear when you walk out of the theater, and don't expect any sense of meaning or continuity. most of the conversation about this movie will be "damn, remember when *insertscaryfigurehere* came out?"
and YES, i know this was an american remake of ju-on, and yes i know the japanese versions made a lot more sense and were tied together a lot better, but i'm not talking about the japanese versions here. a good movie is a good movie if you don't have to refer to other versions of it.
AND while i'm at it... i saw both ringu and the ring (saw ringu first long before i saw the ring), and the ring definitely was the better movie. but it SHOULD be this way anyway, because the ring was built on an existing good horror movie, and could improve/adjust from the original.
