I prefer to get my music through official downloadable sources..but i realize many out there prefer shadier methods..

do many people buy cds on here?... I usually purchase used cds at the record store because they are cheaper then buying downloads but its really a rare occurance.

I like having the physical CD, which I then rip to my computer. If I just want one or two songs, I'll usually go to iTunes, but I'm looking for a DRM-free alternative.

Qtrax ones its up and running will be like Itunes but free. They won't have everything but I think they'll have a lot. Its in beta now and only a few select albums are downloadable but they are DRM free. Also its completely legal. Go to their site they all it all in writing.

I download most of my music illegally, but chances are, if I like something, and can find it, I'll buy it. I always prefer to own the actual album.

From people playing their music through a game's voice chat. Because they know that I don't listen to my own music and I'd be very grateful if they share their Linkin Park garbage through the interweb for me to rock too.

Non-smartass answer: iTunes

I usually hear new music on XM when I'm at home, Sirius in my wife's car, and then purchase the songs I hear on either iTunes or if the whole disc is good, then I'll buy it at Best Buy or Target.

I prefer vinyls, but CDs will do in a pinch.

I like retaining complete control over what I do with my music, and I like source so that I can rip/re-rip my music in whatever quality I want if need be.

Yep. fuck blind buying an album.

I used to go on Napster and all those other sites, but it's hard to get free music anymore. Can't even get any decent porn from Limewire these days.

Limewire? Are you fucking 12 years old? It's called Bittorrent. Get with the program.

Don't know much about it. One of my friends gets music through torrents, so I'll check it out.
Creative Google searches mostly. I don't buy CDs anymore due to not having the space to put them anywhere.
Thank you for reminding me of this:

index.of +?last modified? +?parent directory? +(mp3|wma|ogg)+"band name" -htm -html -php -asp

Same here.

And, OP, if you really want to know about shady methods, the music industry is the best place to look. Just ask the RIAA.

well.. i use "shady" methods to aquire a lot of music.. but to make up for this I do have a subscription to XM and Emusic.. although.. i wish emusic had better punk stuff .. or stuff that I didn't already have.. i imagine in a few months i'll cancel emusic for a while.. unless they get some really heavy weight " punk" labels on there.. but anyways.. i used my amazon gift card from my coinstar to get a few MP3 downloads from there and was impressed a lot more then i was with itunes..

i'm just saying sometimes you just can't "get" the music through the shady methods unless you really really dig and have the patience.. i mean I have all the discographys of all the major punk bands that I like, all the major rock bands, all the major progressive rock bands.. but when you get to more obscure stuff its hard not to just buy the cd or something.

Yep. thats it. It won't find some of the more obscure bands I want, or alot of the early releases, but it covers about 75% of what I want.

If i buy music, I buy they physical CD.
For being exposed to new (to me) music in a legal fashion, I prefer XM.

Same.

I try to purchase CDs at shows, too, so the artist can benefit directly.

Also, everyone, support your local record stores. :)

I can't go into an indie or mom and pop record store anymore without walking away with $50 worth of cds and vinyls.

You don't use torrents? Are you living in the stone age?

Torrents are great because you can download things that you can't get "legally" (Like the Star Wars Christmas Special!), and as much porn as you want. However I find it easier to get have real sex, but I'm not 12. :p

I buy quite a bit (I average in the $100-150 a month range and I prefer vinyl over plastic) but I also tend to download a whole shit load of stuff

CDs of stuff I like after I've listened to it a bunch. Also, there's a new Flogging Molly cd out on Tuesday. Everyone should pick it up; it's phenomenal as usual. Can't wait to see them this month for Saint Patty's.

:applause::applause::applause::applause::applause:

Well said Sir, I'm very much looking forward to a new Flogging Molly CD.

I still buy CD's, Itunes ain't cheap enough and this way I can rip to as many music devices as I choose. As I'm not distributing the music to anyone else I don't see this as illegal, but it probably is.

i've seen/met them like 4 times now.. last saw them in dec. got my set list from them signed.. best band pretty much ever.. the new record is very good.. its up there with drunken lulibyes .. i'm glad its a "proper" release the last two release (the Itunes EP and Whisky on a Sunday) were kind of weak in terms of actual real songs..

I'm actually kind of pissed about the month of April.. I got finals at school but there are literally 10 bands I want to see coming within a two week span.. i can only go to 2 or 3.. (Eve 6, Bouncing Souls, and probably apocalyptica) but theres the Jimmy Eat World/Paramore that should be pretty good Billy talent is coming (albiet with My chemical romance.. so maybe not so much) the aggrolites, the phenomenauts... but yeah got my NOFX/american steel/No use for a name tickets for May (which already has 3 bands I want to see.. Time again, Tiger army, and trevor keith (he's from Face to Face) ... )

i only buy cds when they are used at the record store.. cheaper than Itunes.. but i prefer emusic.. i already have over 100 "saved for later" records on there.. although I don't think there is much else i want after I get those.. BTW if you want to join Emusic send me a PM so I can get 50 free songs if i refer you.

I got a gift subscription to Yahoo music Unlimited, sure its only on computer, but I work it at PC all day, so it's convenient

90% I download from torrent sites and music blogs. 8% from emusic (when they have subscription deals. I used to belong to them in the unlimited days) and probably 2% I buy. I've got 2 nice Ikea cd-lockers filled with nearly 700 cds.
