The Iron Sheik's wrestling topic

Today's Observer site news update is fairly noteworthy -
http://www.wrestlingobserver.com/wo/news/headlines/default.asp?aID=21732

All Japan's hosting a Dory Funk Jr. retirement tour, which will culminate in a 3/1 Sumo Hall show. Also, the Angle-Yuji Nagata match on the NJPW/TNA show that the TNA crew is away for now will be for the "IWGP" title, and not the TNA title, which could lead to Nagata winning it and New Japan finally getting back the belt that Brock stole from them. WWC is also releasing DVDs of some of their Aniversario shows from '85-'88, with some famous bouts including the match that inspired WWE's Inferno match. They're also releasing a Funk Brothers DVD - so far, it seems like the Aniversario show DVD is definitely worth buying.

Myke, you may be interested in this. It's a letter regarding Nigel and a response from Nigel himself.

The first item is a letter a fan wrote to Dave Meltzer at the Observer.

Dear Dave,

I attended both of the NYC ROH shows this past weekend, and was a little disgusted with the events surrounding Nigel McGuinness's injury. I don't know if you're interested, but I wrote this note to whomever may take notice. I already posted it at the ROH forum, but it seems to be going over people's heads there. If you print it, please withhold my name. Thanks.

Yesterday, for the second time in as many months, I attended a Ring of Honor show at the Manhattan Center in which ROH Champion Nigel McGuinness could not defend his title in a previously scheduled match. Before I go any further, I wish to make one thing perfectly clear: I wholeheartedly applaud the decision to pull Nigel McGuinness from the 12/30 show after his concussion suffered on 12/29 (at a show which I also attended). However, the circumstances surrounding the injury have left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

McGuinness’s title match against Austin Aries on 12/29 was outstanding. However, it would have been just as outstanding had McGuinness not taken two headfirst bumps onto the steel guardrail. The pops would have been just as loud for the false finishes if McGuinness hadn’t slammed his head against steel off an Aries suicide dive only a few minutes into the match. As Nigel came up bloody and seemingly loopy, I immediately suspected that he had suffered yet another concussion. Needless to say, I winced when he took a brainbuster on the guardrail later in the match.

This should have come as no surprise to me, though. McGuinness willingly concussed himself last year during a match with Bryan Danielson, taking gruesome, unprotected headshots into the ringpost. I supposed I just hoped that, in a post-Chris Benoit world, a less cavalier attitude would be taken about these things.

As alluded to earlier, this concussion comes on the heels of Nigel missing his match at Glory By Honor, Night Two. At the time, he was nursing a torn bicep, most likely injured performing the same lariat that both broke Jimmy Rave’s jaw and concussed Johnny Fairplay earlier this year. As a trained professional wrestler myself (one who was trained by a talent who has worked for Ring of Honor), I find it offensive that the man has done so much damage to his own body and to the bodies of others.

What I also found offensive, though, were the promos an injured McGuinness came out and cut at both Glory By Honor and Final Battle. Both times, he was heckled by fans who, for whatever reason, weren’t happy to see him, and both times, McGuinness made some very odd statements. At Glory By Honor, in reaction to fans who he felt did not appreciate his sacrifices, Nigel told the crowd that, to paraphrase, maybe he should just quit, and get a job where he can still walk when he’s fifty years old. What is my reaction, as a fan, supposed to be to that? Should I cheer? Should I boo? Should I feel guilty? All I could really think was that he’s right; he should retire right now if his style of wrestling leaves him in danger of ending up like "Dynamite Kid" Tom Billington. At Final Battle, he told the crowd he was keeping the title to spite the fans who booed him, and in appreciation of the ones who supported him- the ones, he told us, who love wrestling and respect the wrestlers. Silly me; I thought I respected the wrestlers because I care about their health. Apparently, Ring of Honor, via a statement given by an employee at their show, would rather I cheer rabidly for more and more action at whatever the cost. This sounds incredibly selfish.

Well, if Ring of Honor wants me to be selfish, so be it. I cannot purchase tickets to a show where I know I may very well not see the scheduled main event. Until Nigel McGuinness loses the ROH Championship, I won’t be at any more shows. And hopefully, this diatribe will strike a chord with someone, be it McGuinness himself, other wrestlers risking their bodies beyond the standards of reason, or promoters looking to put on shows featuring such athletes. Six months ago, we experienced the greatest tragedy in wrestling history. Today, we have not learned from it.

Nigel then responded to the letter before departing for Japan. I tried to highlight his responses.

OK Dave,
Gabe gave me the all clear, so I am staying up at 2:30 in the morning, when I have to be up at 8am tomorrow to pack and leave for my next NOAH tour, to write this because I feel so vehemently mistreated and unjustly referenced by this ignorant article. I have copied the article into this email and will refer specifically to the points in question:

I attended both of the NYC ROH shows this past weekend, and was a little disgusted with the events surrounding Nigel McGuinness's injury. I don't know if you're interested, but I wrote this note to whomever may take notice. I already posted it at the ROH forum, but it seems to be going over people's heads there. Yesterday, for the second time in as many months, I attended a Ring of Honor show at the Manhattan Center in which ROH Champion Nigel McGuinness could not defend his title in a previously scheduled match. Before I go any further, I wish to make one thing perfectly clear: I wholeheartedly applaud the decision to pull Nigel McGuinness from the 12/30 show after his concussion suffered on 12/29 (at a show which I also attended)

--You open by applauding the decision that I and ROH made to protect me from further physical harm by pulling me from the show, and then close by stating you won't buy any more tickets for ROH events where you know you may not see the scheduled main event. How is this applauding the decision?

However, the circumstances surrounding the injury have left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

McGuinness’s title match against Austin Aries on 12/29 was outstanding. However, it would have been just as outstanding had McGuinness not taken two headfirst bumps onto the steel guardrail. The pops would have been just as loud for the false finishes if McGuinness hadn’t slammed his head against steel off an Aries suicide dive only a few minutes into the match.

--I could write a book on what you don't understand or assume about wrestling and this match in particular. First, my head slamming into the guard rail after Aries' dive was not a planned spot in any way. I was further from the guard rail than I needed to be and thus couldn't control my body when I fell forward. It was an accident that I couldn't have avoided and never would have imagined would happen before the match, whether you believe it or not. When you wrestle more than a handful of matches yourself you may realise that. Second I did not take another "head first bump onto the guardrail." The brainbuster you are referring to actually made my shoulders contact the guardrail and in a non injurious manner. And even if it had, that would have been Aries' decision as much as mine. But that didn't happen as he is a world class professional (not just trained by one,) and took care of me as a fellow professional wrestler should.

--I object to this statement for two reasons. First, I did not willingly concuss myself last year in a match with Bryan Danielson. The headshots to which you are referring, while gruesome indeed, caused no concussion. However I did get a concussion a few weeks later in a match against Bryan from a simple back bump after giving a Tower of London which you seem not to object to. One of the most frustrating things is when you really get knocked out but because the bump wasn't visual enough fans don't care or believe you. And second, as far as having a less cavalier attitude about these things I can put my hand on my heart and actually say I'm one of the most concerned people in the locker room today. In fact I was the first person to buy Chris Nowinski's book on concussions and read it cover to cover and it was this reading which caused me to accept the ROH office's support in taking the night off on the 30th.

--You are clearly not smart to the business if you believe this. The only serious damage I have done to anyone's body is my own, and you can ask anyone I've wrestled to qualify that statement, including the people above. And if you do want to talk about people hurting others in the ring, there are certainly others higher on the list than I.

--Is this part of the promo so different to the anti hardcore promos Mick Foley cut for which he was so widely and correctly revered?

--No, it sounds extremely ignorant, your misunderstanding that is. I will keep the belt in spite of the fans who boo me for taking the night off when I have a concussion. This has been my objection all along. You want to know why some wrestlers find it so hard to take a night off when they are risking permanent physical injury by continuing? Because of the reactions I have received by some of the fans when I have done so. Do you think we want to risk that type of a backlash for putting our physical health first? When will it be applauded? When I'm in a wheelchair? The tragedy is that the majority of the fans support such a move, not just in flipant comments like this person, but by continuing to support the product, when such decisions affect the advertised main event. I have no idea why you think anything I said was meant to encourage fans to cheer rabidly for more action at whatever the cost. You missed the point entirely.

--What you said struck a chord with me, not about the subject on which you think you are writing, but on the fact that in our generation we must endure such ignorant, self righteous people who for whatever reason feel it fit to bring their axe to grind based on misinformation and conjecture, rather than fact. I am not a difficult person to contact. I would have gladly explained my position and the truth of the situation to whomever it was that felt fit to post such inflammatory nonsense instead of contacting me themself. I can only believe that the real objection of this person is to the situation of me as champion rather than anything regarding my conduct as such.

He makes a great point about how smart fans make the damnfool mistake of thinking that it's the backdrops/lariats/piledrivers that cause these injuries (hell, wasn't I just that guy the other day myself?), when it's just as likely the mundane moves that can cause injuries as well.

Nigel's a sharp cat.

Excellent read, I think Nigel did a pretty decent job explaining himself, and brought up some good points (like fans not being impressed by something unless it's visually amazing).

The Nigel McGuinness promo in question. It includes an image of the plancha that concussed him, caused the broken nose, and made sure he required stitches.

Watching the freebies on WWE 24/7. HBK vs Max Moon right now. I can't get over the rumors that WWF paid through the nose for Max Moon's rights and outfit, because it's as fuckin' stupid now as it was 15 years ago.

EDIT: I may order WWE 24/7, as this month they're showing the entire "Black Saturday" WWF broadcast.

So I just finished the first five Royal Rumbles (not all in one day). One big shocker was how good Earthquake was. I always thought his character was cool but I didn't ever remember why until I saw him and Typhoon go up against the Road Warriors. I was reminded of someone's comment at a posted Vader vs. Bam Bam Bigelow match from Japan - Serious hossitude. John Tenta seriously could've been Vader-esque if he didn't spend all his post-Earthquake years with joke gimmicks.

Big Boss Man was another pleasant surprise. Stupid gimmick aside, compared to his other 300+ pound peers, he could go. He's the only guy in the first 5 Rumbles that I can recall using an enzuigiri.

Here's Botchamania 36:

God, the clips from that Joe/Necro Butcher match were SICK. I never wanna see anyone fall like that again.

During that bit at the end during the Big Show/Batista match, they left out the "where's my refund?" chant

Quake was amazing. He definitely gave you the illusion he could actually beat Hogan.

There was a cool youtube video of Quake doing a drop kick somewhere around, but I can't seem to find it today.

Sting signs a new contract with.....
TNAWrestlingNews.com can confirm EXCLUSIVELY tonight that Sting, who'll be turning 49 in March, has re-signed with TNA for another year. He will be working a limited schedule in 2008.

Basically, they'll put him out there when they actually need him, as opposed to having to find a role for him on every single show. He'll only do TV when it's leading up to a pay-per-view.
Earthquake actually no-sold a Hawk dropkick during their match and responded with one of his own. Hawk side-stepped it but it was what really made me sit up and start paying attention to the match and led me to my minor revelation about a wrestler who I previously thought I only liked out of nostalgia and the fact that he's was a great guy in real life.

JR-Jericho's looking right at you Triple H!
HHH-So is Benoit.

Man that Batista/Show match was brutal. I love the crowd on that one.

Sometimes I love me some smart marks.

Zen, if you look closely you can see that one red-headed photographer from ROH across from the dead cam in that match. She's in a yellow shirt, IIRC.

Someone told me before that Batista got some heat backstage for not shaking hands with the fans on his way to the ring. Can anyone confirm this?

I don't know anything about that - I think I heard that he threw a shitfit backstage after the match. Can you blame him, though?

Funny that paying fans voice their displeasure about the product, and Vince "give the fans what they want" McMahon almost immediately merges ECW with the traveling crew and arenas of Smackdown.

Damn shame how he passed away. I really think he would've been a good trainer in a developmental territory. In fact, he might've done some work at a school in Florida if memory serves. Not 100% sure on that though.

I loved that entire show. IIRC, there was a 2.5 minute tables match that was basically just a reason to make the originals look like crap so that someone like Test could beat them.

Last time the (WW)ECW will ever go back there I'm sure. haha

Yeah, he had a wrestling school down here in Florida.

I remember my Dad let me skip school and we went down to a Tough Enough ripoff a radio station was running to promote his school. Took place in a bar parking lot and only thing I remember about the competition was 3 people dropped out before we even got there (during the push up part) and they had the contestants stand in the corner and take 3 chops.

Afterwards, Quake got in the ring and had a tag match with his students (god, when he hit those ropes at full speed, the whole ring moved). He then walked around, personally thanked everybody for coming out and had a 15 minute conversation with my Dad.

He was a great guy and it was a shame every wrestling organization misused him.

WWE used him very well during his intial run. His feud with Hogan sticks out as one of the most memorable from my childhood. Probably 3rd, only after Savage and Andre.

The Natural Disasters were a well-used tag team IMO. Except for the fact that you couldn't look at them and not say "THAT'S THAT fuckIN' TUG-BOAT DUDE! HAHAHA!"

I thought Tugboat's heel turn was acknowledged on TV?

Started off with Tugboat being Egomania's buddy, which seemed odd as Quake and Tugboat were of a very similiar stature, but I digress... Hogan tossed Tugboat out of a battle royal and claimed it was on accident. The next time the two were in a battle royal, Tugboat tossed Hogan if memory serves, and the heel turn was on. All of a sudden he had changed his name to Typhoon and was managed by Jimmy Hart. I'm sure some reason for the name change was given at the time, but the idea is it was all in line with his heel turn.

Now of all the odd name changes, I'd say the One Man Gang's transition to Akeem "The African Dream" takes the cake. That just made no sense at all.

Tugboat did turn on TV. Thing is: his wrestling name was tugboat. I don't think you escape that any easier than you would "Red Rooster."

January 4th: Larry Sweeney has just announced that Daniel Puder has been signed for the 1/11 Boston and 1/12 Edison events. Puder will make his in ring ROH debut in Boston. We will have more information on this in next week's ROHwrestling.com Newswire.

January 4th: A unique match has been signed for 1/25 in Dayton. In fact, there will be two really unique matches in faction warfare. Now just signed is No Remorse Corps vs. The Age Of The Fall when Roderick Strong & Rocky Romero collide with Jimmy Jacobs & The Necro Butcher. There are no house shows in Dayton. ROH will always deliver a huge, unique event with fresh matches and intense feuds.

January 4th: It is now official that ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness will put the World Title on the line inside the Steel Cage on 1/25 in Dayton against Chris Hero. The fans of Dayton saw an explosive altercation between them last time. Now one man will walk out of the Steel Cage as World Champion. Hero believes he already has an advantage because McGuinness might not be able to hit the Jawbreaker Lariat with the Steel Cage in the way. Could we see the ROH World Title change hands for the second time in Dayton?

January 4th: You can now watch Nigel McGuinness' emotional promo from last Sunday at the Manhattan Center at www.ROHvideos.com for FREE. This is something that every fan needs to see.

January 4th: Go to the main page of www.ROHwrestling.com later today for details of another big sale including a chance to get cheap tickets to some upcoming events. January 4th: The Age Of The Fall vs. Briscoes feud will continue on 1/26 in Chicago. We have seen Jay Briscoe battle The Necro Butcher in singles competition. Now Mark will get his chance. It will be Mark Briscoe vs. The Necro Butcher in a No DQ bout on 1/26 in Chicago.

January 4th: The Age Of The Fall have demanded that we plug that www.AgeOfTheFall.com has a new look. Since they are now ROH World Tag Team Champions we must oblige. There is an article on The Age Of The Fall winning the ROH World Tag Team Titles with quotes from Jimmy Jacobs, Tyler Black and The Briscoes on the main page of ROHwrestling.com. Jacobs has also demanded mic time before every Age Of The Fall match to talk about what AOTF stands for. Their power has only grown since winning the ROH World Tag Team Titles.

I wish they would hurry up and announce some matches for the Orlando events.

Only thing I know so far is "The stars from Dragon Gate return to Ring of Honor"

I just did the math for NYC shows and RoH apparently earns $39000 for live ticket sales every time they sell out the Manhattan Center - not counting additional merchandise and various other sales.

I think they should just let talent develop on ECW and let them do some of the more extreme stuff, or longer matches, or something. Anything. The show is just a joke. Also the shows would be a lot better if they were live, as proved in the Show/Batista match:)

I wish we would here that "Same old shit" as Raw or PPVs. If it happened on Smackdown it probably would be edited out.

I don't think they should book ECW at all - just let it be wrestling.

Book finishes, obviously, but there's so much interplay between it and SD that it's hard to tell whos an ECW guy and whos not anymore. They're ruining their own attempts to give it a "brand identity."

To be fair, Jimmy Yang and Shannon Moore seem to be getting some recognition on the show for their excellent wrestling. It's nice to see that the biggest and most respected wrestling company in the world is now beginning to recognize what the rest of us knew about those two 8 fuckin' years ago in WCW.

Beginning? Yang's gotten regular pushes on SD for a year, and Moore... well, okay, he's finally getting a major break in WWE, but it isn't like he's some unbelievably great guy in the ring - he's a good hand, and is getting recognized as one. He's never been pushed in a major way in any major company he's been in (WCW, TNA, or WWE).

Forgive me if I don't think being involved in the cruiserweight title hunt is a big deal at all. In fact, I think I look at it precisely the same way the WWE does: meaningless.

I thought it was decent.

The shit at AJ's granny's house was way too fuckin' corny, though.

I thought it was hilarious, but not in a good way. The women's gauntlet was good, the rest weren't, and they all just reeked of a company with no direction trying to just fill time (kind of like the Candido Cup during the online-only Impact days). Not a good way to start their year off, and hearing Cornette announce this night of "gauntlet" matches (just gauntlet for the gold matches without gold on the line) a week after lambasting Morgan for a night of stupid wrestling was odd.

The AJ skits were hit-and-miss, while the Tomko-Angle stuff made me want to see Tomko face him for the world title instead of Cage. Likewise, Booker and Scott Steiner briefly teaming made me wish they were facing the tag champs at the PPV, and not the men who are doing it, Joe and Nash. It's odd that they'd say Hall was given a tag title shot at this PPV when he was gone right after the last PPV, but it worked as far as getting Joe into a title match on the PPV, albeit yet another meaningless throwaway title bout. The show didn't do much to make me want to see Final Resolution, but did make me want to see the Feb. PPV.

Christian pinning Joe with a schoolboy out of nowhere annoyed me quite a bit - for one thing, Joe was the first man to both pin Christian in TNA and make him tap out, so Christian getting retribution should mean more. Also, pinning Joe should mean something, and it was a complete afterthought on this show, as was Cage's victory for that matter. Sure, it's just another example of wins and losses meaning nothing in TNA, but that's not a good thing, and they killed at least some of the appeal of a future Cage-Joe match.
The women's gauntlet was good, the rest weren't, and they all just reeked of a company with no direction trying to just fill time (kind of like the Candido Cup during the online-only Impact days).
I can forgive the Candido Cup simply out of the fact that at least TNA did something nice in tribute to such an awesome and well missed person like Chris Candido. Besides TNA did also have some damn nice fueds and storylines at the time as well even if most of them were short lived. Rhino's debut, Raven's long overdue (and well too short) NWA World Title run, the beginning of Samoa Joe in TNA that includes the infamous Joe/Daniels/Styles three way, Jerry Lynn/Sean Waltman's short reunion fued, and other things.

TNA now.... its just......... Russoriffic.

Rey vs Edge... Jeff Hardy vs Orton... hmm, these are *different* matches for the title. Don't worry though, Cena will be back soon enough.

I, for one, am looking forward to the Rumble. Especially with Trips supposedly being out of it.

Who's the woman in silver?

Necro Butcher in a Dennis Kucinich shirt = funniest wrestling-related thing I've seen in AGES. Especially when contrasted with the man who historically wore a shirt that said "CHOOSE DEATH."

Brent Albright looks badass and conveys perfectly what he's doing/feuding over in the torn up Delirious mask.

Lookit Chris Hero. Go on. Lookit 'im. Christ almighty, he looks like he should be debating the finer merits of Aquaman instead of being in a wrestling ring. Everything about him reeks of "bushleague."

Nice pictures overall, though.

Spoiler tag that one maybe? Stretching my screen all the way into the next room!

Who is the girl that looks like she let the Ultimate Warrior pick out her wrestling attire?

EDIT: NVM, thank you OWW!

I was talking to a friend of mine today who has a comics/games shop and who used to watch wrestling and is still fairly familiar with it. He had a customer come in who stopped reading comics about 9 months ago and wanted to get back into them. He helped him out then moved on to his next customer. They were talking about UFC and wrestling for a few minutes then he left. The first guy came up to buy his comics and mentioned that he heard them talking about wrestling. He told my friend that if he watched Raw he'll probably see him on there then introduced himself as Cody Rhodes. They talked for a little while and he was on his way. Kinda cool.

BTW, I don't know if this common knowledge but Jesse (of Jesse & Festus fame) is the son of Terry Gordy. I found this out listening to some guy review the World Class DVD on F4online. I think Jay posted the link. Actually, I'm not sure knowing who Terry Gordy is common knowledge for some people. Shame be upon you if you don't. I can remember one line the original "Bam Bam" used in a promo: "I may not be a great rassler but I can swang a chair better than any of ya."

I think it's not a secret, but not common knowledge either. The poor kid is 5'7" on his *best* day, and doesn't look anything like his father (Cody Rhodes at least looks like Dusty in the face). I also remember that phrase from Gordy, and that he was an underrated talker, IMO. He never cut 4-minute masterpieces like Flair or Hogan, but what little he said worked well. In addition, the facial expressions he made when Hayes or Roberts were talking (the kind that said "there's not much goin' on inside this brain except a desire to beat you up") were incredible.

Ray Gordy isn't that incredible as a wrestler, but he does have some moxie on the mic (though he's kinda like a "HEY KIDS!" kinda guy).

I just read that Ashley is coming back soon to Raw with
Atlas DaBone
.

I'll be pissed (but unsurprised) if he has to change his theme music from "Jive Soul Bro."
