The libertarian's guide to externality costing. What do we do about the oil spill?
If there was increased regulation leading to things like costs associated with safety measures and such, it would be paid for by the company - who would increase the price of the products to compensate.
Yup.
You would need taxes to pay for the bureaucracy associated with inspections and such. But is that the real cost of the good or is that the cost of living and working in a safe environment?
That would be part of the real cost. Whether it's a tax on the good or a tax on the company directly, either way. Might be harder to hide from a tax on the good itself though.

First time I read that I thought it was a joke. Those damn hollywood liberals need to mind their own business.

I work for the government, and recently, they offered all of us employees the opportunity to go down to the Gulf to help clean up. We go for 30 days and work for 8 to 10 hours a day. We get paid our normal wages, plus overtime for over 40. We also get put up in a hotel and we get ~$60 a day in food. I think I'll be headed down on the next trip. I know it's going to be miserable work, but I think the experience will be cool. Plus, I've never been down to the southern states.
But to pretend to be a human being for a second (lolz amirite?), who the fuck would want to clean up the gulf when that shit is out there?

Sorry honey. Daddy has to work for shit wages in ultra toxic conditions cause BP can't get its shit together.

OMG GET YOUR LAZY ASSES OUT IN THAT SHIT AND PUMP. THE LAZY FAIRE MARKET IS DEPENDING ON YOU TO NOT TAKE UNEMPLOYMENT WHEN THEY GOT THEM THAR JERBS OUT THERE THAT AMERICANS WILL DO STEAD OF THEM ILLEGALS LOLZ.
So, we're paying to ship random government employees down there, training them (I assume) and housing them. Plus, I assume, we're paying someone to do the jobs of these people who are taking time off to go down to the gulf and clean. Instead, we could be training those already there, already in the industry and already out of work. Except that speedracer seems to think this is a bad idea - that no one should be cleaning this stuff up because it's icky.

BP is hiring anyone that wants to work on picking up tarballs that hit the shore so the media can't run stories about oil everywhere. As long as it's in the gulf with no 3 year old standing next to it, no one gives a shit. I know you understand this.
Except that speedracer seems to think this is a bad idea - that no one should be cleaning this stuff up because it's icky.
First of all, fuck you.

The oil alone is going to screw up a seriously large number of people. Add the detergent they're using that's known to cause just about every cancer known to man and there's going to be serious side effects and consequences. People right now are choosing between their families starving or working where BP refuses to give them proper safety equipment. What kind of choice is that and more importantly, what kind of shit bag of a human being do you have to be to minimize that to "icky"?

Access, who do you work for? I work for a large governmental organization in the gulf and they don't want us anywhere near that shit. What organization requested your assistance?

Don't do it man. You don't want to be anywhere near it.

This week in lolspills:

BP security detains an Audubon Society member for filming outside their headquarters. When asked what the hell they were thinking, they claim it could be a terrorist. Riiiiiiiiiight.

The oil spill clean up is a sham to minimize bad publicity. But you already knew that. It's cool though. If everyone pretends together, we'll all feel better about it.

BP is burning wildlife alive and they don't give a shit. Won't someone think of the turtles?

A boat captain committed suicide after seeing how bad the spill had gotten. Naturally, it's Obama's fault.

Joe Barton apologized to BP, then unapologized when the Republican leadership spanked him in public. It takes real courage to back down from your bold stand and whimper an apology after getting paddled. It takes even more courage to unapologize for the apology for the apology. God bless Twitter.

That underwater oil that BP says doesn't exist but we all know they're lying about exists and is like, bad and stuff.

Even business sycophant Clusterstock took the libertarians behind the woodshed over the liability cost thing I wrote about and linked in post #390.

But seriously though. You can trust BP to do the right thing. The market will sort this all out and everyone will be made whole.

Jimmy Buffet sent ships to help clean, and was promptly turned away.

You are now realizing, Redumblicans, that BP is the one refusing all of the help in the Gulf, that the president is entirely inconsequential in this situation because the government is A) not supposed to be superseding private business like you guys like to fap all over, and B) because this requires specialized training the government and military wouldn't ever have to begin with, that this is going to slowly seep all around the world and ruin industries in incalculable ways, that this is the result of our dependence on an energy source that could have been fully phased out by now, and dozens of other "why are you people this damn stupid" responses that I could sit around all day typing.

So hey. I guess add "enjoying beaches and lobster" to your liberal agenda score sheets. That'll be another way to sniff out those nasty jerks so you'll know to instantly vote against anything they suggest. Put out a fire with water? NO WAY, THAT'S FOR PUSSIES.

It's cool though. Water isn't alive and Barton already apologized. You doods have covered all your bases (ecologically and corporately speaking), and can afford to sit back and be smugly unhelpful some more.

WHY IS EVERYONE SO MAD

It's just oil, bitches! That's what Rush Limbaugh fries his oxycontin sandwiches in! The's the same thing we used to win Dubuhya-Dubuhya Too! It's made out of Jesus lizards that God put into the Earth for us to dig up and show those smarmy scientists that evolution is wrong! It's used in make ups and markers! And YOU pussies want us to be mad about it? What do you have against women looking pretty and children learning in kindergarten? IS THAT IT? ARE YOU SUMBITCHES SEXIST, AND WANT WOMEN TO BE CLUBBED OVER THE HEAD LIKE IN THE DAYS OF CAVEMEN?

Librul commie bastards, every one of ya. Go move back to Nyew Yerk Citah with all the other illegals. Or hell! Get the hell outta my countree and get yer asses over 'cross them thar boarders, since you LUV them people so much.

Yes, I'm sure BP is responsible for turning away every single foreign country that has offered to send support. I'm also sure that BP is responsible for refusing to allow oil skimmers from all over the US to go to the Gulf for fear there *might* be a spill elsewhere.

"Redumblicans"? Below "lazy faire", "Faux News", "M$" and "Barack Hussein Osama". Are you even trying?
First of all, fuck you.
No thanks, I'm married.

Look, it's simple - it gets cleaned up or it doesn't.

If you want to clean it up, you're going to need manpower to do it. Magic unicorns aren't going to swoop down from the sky and fix it.

Now, we don't have enough people trained to handle this situation. Military, civilian - whatever, we just don't have the people trained for it.

So, you've got two choices. First, fly a bunch of people in, pay 'em, train 'em, house 'em, then fly them back home, away from the gulf drilling zone. Second, take the people who are already in the gulf and already in the industry - pay *them*, train them, they've got houses and they're already in the area, so if there's a next time for the spill, they'll be on top of handling the spills.

It's a bad situation - yes. But it's got to be cleaned up. Which means training people to do it. Let's train the people already there.

I like how it's an either/or thing being discussed in terms of getting people out there to clean up the oil, instead of the obviously-more-correct "we'll take anyone willing." Do you seriously think people are being chosen to do this, and that it's some kind of lottery where only the "lucky few" are being sent to clean it up? Of course not. Right now, whoever is organizing a beach-side cleanup is scrambling to get anyone and everyone who is going to show up. Because a job consisting of cleaning up endless sludge on a shoreline, where you are depressed watching animal life helplessly flail around and slowly die, it smells like shit, you're sticky and hot and wet and gross, and you get to do this for eight hours? You can't bug people to put their trash in cans, nor even be willing to pick up a piece of trash a day, and you actually believe that there's some swarm of people being picked and chosen to clean this up like it was some kind of prize?

Who remembers the clip of Lisa Simpson cleaning off the oil-drenched rocks at the beach with a toothbrush, and the second she was done, it just got washed over again with the next wave?

Magnify that joke by about a billion.

Gosh, where have I heard this before? Oh right. All the "them Mexicans are stealin' rrr jerrbs!" Because people were LINING UP for the high profile job of picking fruit in 100+ sunny weather with little to no breaks for minimum wage, insisting upon the idea that if we were to deport all of them, Americans would be flooding the door to get their pick on.

While we're at making-current-day-stupid-arguments-that-echo-past-day-stupid-arguments, how hilarious is it to see a contingent of people INSISTING upon "we need to get our men over there to fix it!" while sitting on their asses? Gosh, what's gone on since 2003 that could possibly parallel this?

Finally, let's throw out this bullshit about how Obama turned down Dutch ships. It's a law. First off, find out who wrote the law, why it is in place, why it is being enforced now, who is bringing it up since it's clearly out of date and obscure, and all the other information. Further, don't even fucking pretend that you shits wouldn't have thrown out the OMFG OBAMA IS SHREDDING THE CONSTITUTION AND INCREASING HIS EXECUTIVE POWER if he had allowed the Dutch to help in light of this law. You idiots would have been screaming that he's overstepping his bounds and gobbling up power pellets like a crazed Pacman.

So shut the fuck up. Tired of all this never-happy-no-matter-what bullshit you idiots have been pulling since November 2008. We're smack dab in a monumental disaster that's going to affects the entire world for decades, and the best arguments you guys can muster up is "it's Obama's fault" and "oil isn't so bad anyway" and "we need to protect jobs."

Man. To think that if I were in a store and dropped a vase, I'd have assets protection rejects swamping my ass and demanding I pay the 6.99. fuck up an entire coast line and you actually get people feeling sorry for you having to pay to clean it up.

How weird - I'm suggesting just the opposite - instead of sending people over there to fix it, I'm suggesting we use the people who are already there. Crazy.

Yeah, Obama is the protector and enforcer of the Constitution - he's always followed it, letter by letter and never lost sight of doing what's right.

Like when he got the Attorney General to announce that they were doing a criminal investigation and then rounded up BP executives in a meeting with the AG and threatened either give us money or things will be a whole lot worse. That sounds familiar.

When was the prosecution? I missed that part. It seems to me, Obama completely ignored the entire judicial branch of the government, putting himself on top.

Oh good. I'm going to walk into Walmart tomorrow and punch a TV. Can't wait to trap them fuckers with how illogical "you broke it you bought it" is. Didn't send me through the entire judicial branch, ya'll. Invalid!

THEN I'm going to go into all the mom and pop stores around here and call them terrorist anti-Constitution shitstains and I'm going to sue them to the center of the sun if I see a sign informing me of the above rule, WHICH IS NOT A LAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

I'll make you a deal. You do this. Promise me you'll do this. Have a friend with you to take video. If Walmart doesn't call the cops on you and, instead, makes threats against you if you don't pay up some magical amount that they made up that has no real connection to the amount of damages you can be proven to be responsible for at the time, then I will leave the vs. forum forever. Better yet, I'll leave CAG forever - never to return.

Deal? Or are you just talking out of your backside? Because I'm betting you know it's more of the backside-thing.

You can be obsessed about various parts of my body. I'm used to it. Beyond that, we all love seeing all your hilariously bad analogies, so why would I deny this forum this?

Besides, Walmart arrests gay couples who didn't steal anything and makes them pay for the non-stolen goods. And then they tell people to not prosecute if the stolen item in question is under a certain dollar amount - I believe it was $20. So they clearly don't give a shit about laws or rules or uniformity or anything.

Do you realize how much money falls out of thin air when someone says to me to stop being a smartass? It depends on which country I am in at the time. Pacland gives me huge stacks of pretzels, for example. And a cherry. But never a cantaloupe.

How much longer do I have to be a smartass ambassador to all these lands until all the people wise the hell up? It's like, damn people, you know how I am by now - I show up, call your queen a musty old crumb, fart in the punch, and proposition the princesses. You all know the drill. And then I think - Why are they keep inviting me back so much?

Everyone is so addickted.

See how that works? I use what you've said in the past and just go with it until it's logically concluded.

Been there, done that (not under the conditions some of these people work under though), it sucks.

And no, I haven't been "painting illegals as nothing but illegals" - in fact, I've said more than once that the focus needs to be on the violent criminals. Perhaps if you spent more time reading my posts instead of blindly and foolishly assuming you think you already know what I've written without figuring out that the random squiggles and lines form letters and words that we use to communicate, you might have noticed that.

Oh, violent criminals... You mean the same dudes that cook up meth around the corner from you? Or how about the gang bangers in East St Louis? We could clean up the country's crime problems but it would take more money to hire more cops.

Hell, the Illinois Highway Patrol laid off nearly a third of their cops. We could give them more money but you'd just bitch about higher taxes.

I have no problems with someone cooking meth in and of itself, believe it or not.

Beyond that point, the Illinois Highway patrol was a joke - and now even more so. A portion of the ones that were laid off are being re-hired to enforce our new state-authorized poker machines. But that's a whole different issue. Anywhoo, the State Highway patrol wasn't about violent offenders as much as they were about seat belt and speeding tickets. I *guess* you could stretch speeding into a violent crime, if you tried really hard.

You seriously have no problem with cooking meth but you have a problem with someone that walks across the desert to cut some rich dude's grass? Seriously?

-ish. No more of a problem than I have with someone growing pot or such.

Now, if they're stealing the supplies, cooking around children, cooking in an unsafe way that could blow up the neighborhood, etc., etc... That's a different story.
The difference is that you grow pot and you cook meth. I've never been blown up growing plants.
I know of a guy who blew up his trailer and damaged several others by pouring bleach, drain cleaner and several other chemicals down his toilet trying to get it unclogged.

Just because that guy was a moron and blew up his trailer doesn't mean one can't safely unclog their own toilet.

Likewise, it is possible to safely cook meth in a controlled environment. Now, the guy down the street? Probably doesn't have a fire extinguisher handy. That's an issue. But the simple act of cooking meth? Man, if you're stupid enough to put that shit in your body, more power to you. I can just hope you don't reproduce.

If the ban was limited to those involved with the current spill, then I'd say that made sense.
But it wasn't. The ban effected everyone. It's like recalling all cars because some Toyotas had problems with their breaks.

How many companies in the world do you think are actively involved in deep water operations? How different do you think their setups are?

Your analogies are so consistently bad that it makes me think something is wired wrong. A good analogy would be recalling all cars with the exact same parts that failed because there was actually was a failure that cost hundreds of billions of dollars and affected millions of people. Because that's, you know, what actually happened.

Not Obama's call. That's what the courts are for. That's why we have three branches of government. If you're really okay with the idea of the law-enforcement branch doling out penalties, why even have a court system?

How many companies in the world do you think are actively involved in deep water operations? How different do you think their setups are?

More than one. And I don't know. Are they all following the supposed unsafe and cheap procedures that BP was working under? Every single one of them?

Law enforcement branch? wtf?

The bully pulpit is a long tradition in American history Bob. Obama couldn't require BP to do shit. BP was not required to do shit. Obama had a choice: work with BP to fix it or completely sell BP out in the media and really make em look awful. He gave BP the choice, with the caveat being that if his administration works with BP, BP will open an escrow account because there might not be money left after the investors safely (and completely unfairly to those with civil recourse) take theirs out (to the tune of $100 billion so far).

So what part of that very basic political decision do you have a problem with?
More than one. And I don't know. Are they all following the supposed unsafe and cheap procedures that BP was working under? Every single one of them?

That's kind of EXACTLY the damn point, man. MMS dicked up everything they touched and no one knows what's going on. Rather than immediately ban all deep water drilling (or even all offshore drilling, shit that Mexican spill was in
