The Many Games of Wii Thread

So you own a Wii, and you're wondering what other great games are for the platform. Sure, you can just ignore this list and continue saying Wii has no good games, but that wouldn't be very mature to do. This topic is an indictment of many Wii owners who are sick of hearing "Wii has no good games" from idiots and trolls who hate the system.

New games will be added. Feel free to recommend your own favorites as welL that you think deserve to be on this list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EG7rDOF9nwI

Super Mario Galaxy

Not just one of the Wii's best games, but one of the best games this generation. It's the magnificent Super Mario Galaxy, a game that's fun to go after stars or just fool around with the gravity mechanic. Mario once again moves like a dream in a game that's challenging but not overly, frustratingly so. Who knew that we'd get a sequel to this game the same generation? That has to be some kind of miracle.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

The all-star brawl is on with Super Smash Bros. Brawl. While not a perfect game with the okay Subspace Emissary and the clumsy characters tripping occasionally, this game is packed with content more so than any other Wii game with more characters, more stages, more music, and objectively more fun than past Smash games. The amount of content available will have players brawling for days before even coming close to seeing all the game has to offer. Sakurai and crew did a phenomenal job with this game.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Also available on Nintendo's doomed console, the Gamecube, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is the closest thing to Ocarina of Time since, well, Ocarina of Time. With a myriad of puzzling dungeons, a cast of charming characters, and plenty of hours to sink in as you explore Hyrule, Twilight Princess is yet another jewel in the Legend of Zelda franchise's crown. The Wii version brought with it pointer functionality that paved the way for games to follow. Whether you prefer it on Gamecube or Wii, Twilight Princess is a great game that no Wii owner should be without.

Metroid Prime Trilogy

I was going to mention Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, but I can just kill three birds with charge shot by bringing up Metroid Prime Trilogy instead. Featuring all three of the Metroid Prime games, the two Gamecube, and one Wii title, Metroid Prime Trilogy is the best collection you can find on Wii-- arguably this generation. The level design of all three games is superb, and the new Wii controls make Prime 1 and 2 control like completely different games-- and that's for the better by the way.

Mario Kart Wii

Mario Kart Wii feels like the most complete Mario Kart yet. It has thirty-two tracks, sixteen old and sixteen new, a bounty of characters, karts, and options, and a terrific online system-- something Brawl would be jealous of. The only kink in Mario Kart Wii's armor is that the game can feel very cheap in later difficulties with items being tossed around like confetti. Other than, Mario Kart Wii is a fantastic addition to the franchise and to one's Wii collection.

Excitebots: Trick Racing

From one racer to another with Excitebots: Trick Racing. Excitebots is a sequel to the Wii launch title Excite Truck. In this case you're racing robotic creatures like crabs and ladybugs instead of four-wheelers. The game is mad fun with friends and terrific alone as well. It's not just about coming first as much as it is about doing it in style, earning stars by performing tricks such as tree runs and super sandwiches. Have I lost you yet? Just pick up the game to see what I mean.

Animal Crossing: City Folk

Feeling more like Animal Crossing 2.5 than a full-fledged new entry in the series, Animal Crossing: City Folk is still a fun experience. The big new additions to the game include the city where players can meet Crazy Redd, get their hair done differently, and bid at auctions, and downloadable content that is still supported to this day. Taking care of your town and conversing with your citizens is still a big part of what makes Animal Crossing so great, and the included Wii Speak online play is a wonderful experience, too.

Wario Land Shake It!

Shake what your mama gave you with Wario Land: Shake It! With 39 levels, some optional, to explore, Wario has a lot of excavating for treasure to do. You could play the game one of two ways: 1) run through the levels without going for treasure, or 2) collecting treasure and completing the challenge goals like don't get hit in a level. Players who followed choice #2 found a much more rewarding game than those who just breezed through it. Couple that with one of the best soundtracks last year, and Wario Land Shake It! is a platformer that shouldn't be missed.

Wii Sports Resort

Nintendo's premier game utilizing MotionPlus, Wii Sports Resort features twelve unique sports from table tennis to golf, basketball to bowling. Each sport has alternate versions like 10-pin bowling and 100-pin bowling. Some sports work extraordinarily well while others do not such as cycling. Regardless, it's difficult not to find a sport you'll love in this package. Not to mention that this game is a local multiplayer bonanza of laughter and fun.

Super Paper Mario

Flip it good! Super Paper Mario had an interesting gameplay mechanic to it. Mario could at any time flip the dimension, that is, he could walk on a traditional 2D plane or flip it to a 3D one. This trick was used countless times throughout the course of the game. A huge mountain stands in Mario's way in 2D? Flip it, and he can go behind it in 3D. Super Paper Mario is a wonderful, if not verbose, adventure that Wii owners should not skimp out on.

Little King's Story

Take command of your subjects as you attempt to expand your kingdom far from its original boundaries. Little King's Story is one of the best Wii games of the year, and it commands more attention than it's been receiving. While there's no Wii remote functionality which makes things sometimes unwieldy, the game has a feel that a lot of heart and soul was put into the game, something that many games lack.

Boom Blox

The first game resulting from the partnership between EA and director Steven Spielberg, Boom Blox is a physics-based puzzler that's a blast to play-- literally! There's a variety of different puzzles to solve-- over 100-- and they range from knocking down a stack of blocks in as few throws as possible to carefully pulling out blocks from a large tower without having it fall over, Jenga-style. You can also create your own stages and send them to friends. Speaking of friends, like Wii Sports Resort, it's a wonderful game to play with friends.

Bully: Scholarship Edition

Also available on the Xbox 360, Bully: Scholarship Edition on Wii is GTA without all the juvenile "69-styled" humor. You play as Jimmy Hopkins, a boy who has bounced from boarding school to boarding school and is not at Bullsworth Academy. It's his goal to rule the school. Wii functionality from dissecting frogs to shooting foes with his slingshot is included, and these touches are done very well. There's so much to do that the game will take at least 24 real-time hours to complete. School is back in session.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10

Quite possibly the best, most entertaining golf simulator ever, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 for Wii brings with it 27 courses, seven of which are brand-new, friend code-free online, an exhaustive create-a-golfer, and tactile response with the Wii MotionPlus peripheral. Even without the attachment, the game plays beautifully. This is yet another game with a smorgasbord of content from tournaments to challenges.

We Love Golf!

We go from a realistic golf game to a cartoon golf game with the exceptional We Love Golf! While you don't swing the Wii remote like you would with Tiger Woods, the game plays just fine regardless. There's eight varied courses in all from canyons to flower gardens, ten characters, each with a special Capcom-themed costume to unlock, and fun match play-styled online play to boot. This golf bag is definitely packed. Not more than Tiger, but those wanting a less realistic experience can't go wrong with We Love Golf!

Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon

Not as difficult as most rogue-likes, Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeons is another game brimming with charm. The gameplay is fast and fluid, the presentation is top-notch, and the hours you'll spend completing the game will be long and lasting. There's also online card-battling as seen in another Final Fantasy Fables game, Chocobo Tales for the DS.

Klonoa

The Wii version of Door to Phantomile, Klonoa received a huge graphical overhaul, and it looks very impressive. The game is a 2 1/2D platformer. The catch is that Klonoa can grab certain enemies and use them to leap to higher platforms. This mechanic is main draw to the series other than superb platforming action. Klonoa will only take three hours to beat, but it's a very satisfying three hours... and three hours you'll want to revisit again and again.

de Blob

de Blob sold rather well for THQ which is a great surprise. The aim of de Blob is to color as much of Radian City as possible by completing challenges as de Blob trudges on to save the day. de Blob is a very entertaining 3D platformer that's easy on the eyes and fun throughout its duration.

Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition

Resident Evil 4 is one of the best games of last generation, and definitely one of the best Gamecube games available. It comes to Wii with brand new controls as all of the extras of the Playstation 2 version making Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition the definitive version of this epic and classic game.

The House of the Dead: Overkill

Rail-shooters seem to be the popular genre for third parties on Wii. If they're as high of quality as the House of the Dead: Overkill, then maybe that isn't so bad. Featuring a grindhouse-style presentation, crude humor and foul language, six levels to blast zombies back to being inanimate, and multiple unlockables to attain, House of the Dead: Overkill is my personal favorite light-gun shooter period.

MadWorld

From very violent to ultra-violent, MadWorld is all about scoring points. How do you score points? Killing enemies in as gruesome and creative as possible. Featuring a distinctive black-and-white art style, MadWorld plays a lot like another overlooked game, God Hand for the PS2. It seems Platinum Games is doomed to make games that cater to a niche market. If that means they can keep on rolling, then so be it!

As you can see, the Wii has a lot of great games that don't fall under the typical genres. Most of the games aren't blockbuster releases. Honorable mentions include No More Heroes, Trauma Center, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.

Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure

This game is one that just might have been doomed to fail. The game's aesthetics were too Saturday morning cartoon for adults, and the game's huge difficulty was too hard for younger gamers. Thus, Zack and Wiki became niche from the word "go". Those who delve into the game were rewarded with mind-bending puzzles, an irresistible charm, and a worthy game for their collections. Just turn down the volume for the "ZAKU" cries from Wiki.

Boom Blox: Bash Party

The original Boom Blox was a blockbuster unlike any other. This sequel takes the gameplay of the original and adds a host of new content. The aim of Boom Blox is to play several block puzzles from knocking down a tower of blocks in as few throws as possible to Jenga-like challenges. You can download new puzzles from EA servers or create your own to share with the world. Boom Blox sunk under the radar and sold a fair share of copies. Perhaps Bash Party is doing the same.

The Munchables

What do you get when you mix Pac-man with Katamari Damacy? You get The Munchables, a budget-priced Wii game with loads of quirky charm much like the games it's inspired from. Gobble up baddies to get bigger to access new areas featuring even more delectable foes to devour!

Battalion Wars II

I thought having the acronym as BWii was ingenious. It's so simple, but it works so well. It's unfortunate that Battalion Wars II was overlooked. The game was released during the same holiday season as Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, so perhaps that was one of the contributing factors into it be less talked about. All of the tactical, real-time action of the first BW was present, and BWii brought with it online play for two friends to blow their enemies away with. It's a shame Wii Speak wasn't around then, because the game would have really benefited from it.

Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy

Blast Works is a "your mileage may vary" type title. For someone who likes creating and are interested in game design-- even a passing interest like myself-- there's a lot to enjoy in this game. The single-player campaign is a bonus. Others who have no desire to make their own creations and levels will probably not have much to appreciate as the campaign is relatively lackluster even with the innovative gimmick "attached" to the game. For the former, there's plenty of content from other players sent from WiiConnect24-- levels, ships, enemies, background objects, and more for aspiring designers to adore.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles

Zombies. I thought you guys might show up. This light-gun shooter has tons of longevity through in-mission rankings and loads of scenarios to blast zombies away to. The game follows Resident Evil, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 0. What better game to play in anticipation for the Darkside Chronicles?

No More Heroes

Meet Travis. He's an otaku who loves wrestling as well as women. While not a perfect game by any means, No More Heroes is a fun if not at times repetitive action game. Explore Santa Destroy upon Travis' bike, slice enemies with intuitive finishing moves with the Wii remote, and commence the bloodbath!

I like the idea you have going on here. Theres 4 Nintendo titles that I dont have that I'd like to buy possibly one day. That being The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Animal Crossing: City Folk, and Wario Land Shake It! I'm not sure how good these are compared to one of my favorites of all, Mario Kart Wii. If I were to purchase these it would most likely be duringa Buy 2 get 1 Free sale going on at either Target or Toys R Us. Which would be the best 3 to pick from these? Any experience/suggestions are appreciated.

City Folk is a fun game, but it treads on a lot of content from Wild World. It depends on how much you like the formula of the franchise, I guess. I loved it. Wario Land is definitely recommended as is Metroid Prime Trilogy since it's three games in one. Twilight Princess is great, too. Either the Wii or Gamecube version works. Whichever you can find the cheapest.

Is this list done? No Zack & Wiki or Okami (I know a lot of people must have missed out on it on the PS2). There's also the other Sega Light gun games from the the House of the Dead series and Ghost Squad.

Also Doomed would get mad at you for not included Endless Ocean. I own most of the games on this list, and never had to pay more than $20 average.

Nope.

Great list! You probably should have tried to reserve a few more posts in case you decide to add more stuff to this or just need the extra space for more games.

Same here - one of the reasons I LOVE gaming on Wii this generation is that it's much cheaper than ever before to own good games. My collection is huge.
:D

Nice post. There are a few games listed here that I will rent at least. My Wii has been getting no love lately that's what she said.

Also, you are missing a "not" in your paper mario paragraph...

I agree that Okami definitely needs to be on this list. It is one of the best Wii games so far, even if it is a remake of a PS2 game.

Okami needs to be added. You should also add some Wiiware games like World of Good and Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People.

I agree that many of the games mentioned above are worth adding. Okami, The Godfather: Blackhand Edition, Ghost Squad, Endless Ocean, and Punch Out!! are all very enjoyable games.

A few games that other people haven't mentioned (possibly more borderline cases) include:

1. Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy -- Not for everyone because the level editor has a high learning curve, but amazing if you ever wanted to create your own shmup. I highly recommmend checking out videos of Gryzor's homemade levels:
http://www.blastworksdepot.com/games/blastworks/videos

2. Deadly Creatures -- The game has some QA flaws in later levels, but takes a unique perspective and does many things well. Not recommended at full price, but the going rate is perfect.

3. Elebits -- An often ignored launch game, but one that is still worth playing. Good simple fun, especially if you don't mind "cute" games. The ability to create and share content is a bonus if you have friends with the game.

4. Geometry Wars: Galaxies -- Superb arcade action, with many variations on the Geometry Wars theme. Anyone who enjoys retro gameplay or high-score competition should jump on this game now, since they (apparently) aren't printing it anymore.

5. Sam & Max Season 1 -- The game engine isn't as smooth as I'd like, but solid humor and a delightful throwback to classic point-and-click adventure makes up for that. Best of all, it's only $10 brand new at EB Games (Canada).

6. Scarface -- Personally I think The Godfather is more interesting because the source material is better, but this is also a very solid licensed game. Fans of the movie should definitely check this out.

7. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Trilogy -- I know this is a multiplatform title, but it's still a stellar game at a great price. Not difficult and not serious, but with tons of gameplay and secrets to unlock.

It's also worth pointing out (again) that you should be able to get all of these games new for under $25, or even less if you don't mind used copies. I know that price shouldn't affect the expected quality of games... but given the choice between 3 of the listed titles or 1 new 360/PS3 title, it's impossible to argue that price *doesn't* affect my choice.

Finally, four games that totally get overlooked but are totally worth owning: Dawn of Discovery, Phantom Brave, Tenchu Assassins, and WordJong Party.

I agree with adding these two titles
  • Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy
  • Deadly Creatures
As far as Wii Games go, I would also add Wario Ware Smooth Moves, and Punch Out!!

Also, I think that Bully: Scholorship Edition should be removed from the list. It is not one of the great Wii games.

A WiiWare section should be added. These are my top picks for WiiWare (no order):
  • World of Goo
  • Swords & Soldiers
  • Lost Winds
  • NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits
  • Mega Man 9
  • Tetris Party
  • Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
  • Bonsai Barber
  • Bit.Trip Beat
  • Bit.Trip Core
  • Dr. Mario Rx Online
  • Bomberman Blast

"Also, I think that Bully: Scholorship Edition should be removed from the list. It is not one of the great Wii games."

I respectfully disagree. Click on the game title for the review.

Added Blast Works and Battalion Wars II. Having trouble resizing pics. They stay the same size even after I make them smaller...

This is the hard part - everyone has different opinions about what is/isn't a keeper... Personally, I found Battalion Wars II completely underwhelming and wouldn't recommend it. But it's fine if people disagree on that point.

Also, just because I can I'm going to reiterate that Dawn of Discovery, Phantom Brave, and Tenchu Assassins are totally overlooked games on Wii.

I'm going by popular opinion on that one.
I still need to put up a bunch of other games, but I need to figure out why the pictures won't resize.

Added video to OP.

The Godfather Blackhand Edition deserves to be on the list, easily one of the best uses of motion controls on the Wii, including Nintendo games. Fun game too, especially for fans of the movie.

Okami should be on the list, I had problems with the motion controls at one or two points in the game but other then that it's a great Zelda style adventure.

Since Metroid Prime Trilogy is on the list I would put on Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. Also a Gamecube rerelease, but an excellent first game from the Mario Galaxy developers.
Perhaps also the other two NPC games, Pikmin and Mario Power Tennis?

It's another rerelease, but Metal Slug Anthology is a bunch of fun. I don't normally like those 1 hit 1 kill type shooters but I really enjoyed the Metal Slug games. The disk has 6 games plus 1 remake and can be had for less then $20. An excellent valve for a bunch of games.

Finally I would recommend both House of the Dead 2 & 3 The Return and Ghost Squad. Neither game is as good as House of the Dead Overkill, but I felt both were fun rail shooters worth their budget prices.

Edit: Haven't played it yet, but I've heard very good things about Punch Out.

Nice. I haven't found this game for sub-$20 yet, but would love to pick it up for that price. Everywhere I see it, the game is still more than I'm willing to pay -- $35 or $40. (Note that I'm in Canada, so maybe it's just a regional thing?)

Blastworks I could do without in this list. It's got powerful tools, if you're willing to learn them and have a high tolerance for quirks, to build your own levels, but... the game really isn't much fun, which seems to me is pretty much a deal killer when it comes to a game. Does anyone have fun for more then a few minutes actually playing Blastworks? I doubt any but the most incredibly determined have finished the built-in levels. It's a pretty terrible 2D shooter. Nice concept, but lousy in practice.

I enjoyed it a lot! I mean- maybe it doesn't deserve to be on the list- it isn't in my top 10 Wii Games... BUT I did find it very fun.

its 18 dollars(usd) at gamestop before edge card and/or coupons. i dont know if you have gamestop in canada, its not a real country anyways.

Real country or not, its wearing the U.S.A. for underpants.

What about multiplatform games? Rock Band 2 is just as good on the Wii as its HD counterparts, with its only knock being the 2GB limit for DLC. Same with the GH series.

Grand Slam Tennis is also pretty fun, but the M+ is very finicky in this game (needs pretty regular calibration) and the auto-positioning of players isn't the greatest.

Thank you, thank you, Sam-I-am!

I need to go play Wario Land: Shake It! again. It's 12:45AM here, and that is what I will do right now. You reminded me how awesome that music is.

Come on, no hate for Pokemon. It's a pretty solid game (tho it didn't reach the potential of what they could have done) and the online play is rarely laggy and you can still find matches quickly even a year and change after it's been out.

I can understand BlastWorks being a "take it or leave it" kind of game... in fact, maybe it doesn't belong on the list. There is a lot of content there for people who do enjoy it, but an oddball take on the already niche shmup genre probably isn't going to attract a lot of fans.

That said, people (including me) who like the game like it a lot. Using the new Nintendo Channel to check how many hours I've played various games for, it was a surprise to see BlastWorks in my top 5. Nearly 80 hours has been spent playing campaign levels and downloaded content, working in the designer, and enjoying the Kenta Cho originals that get unlocked as you progress through the game.

And no, I haven't beat it all on the hardest difficulty. Yet.

I love that feature on the Nintendo Channel. Much to my surprise, it told me that I've sunk a staggering 114 hours into Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. Sure, it's my favourite Wii game, but man... Looks like I need to get a life!

with blastworks, I had a lot of fun with the hidden games- I couldn't beat the game myself, so grabbed a savefile off gamefaqs.
They are solid shooters in their own right.

I too was surprised my most played game was radiant dawn, but I only played it once so my time is 60 hours.

I was also surprised how little time I spent beating death jr- as an easy to pick up co-op game, the fun felt much longer than the 4 hours it took to beat. But co-op games for me usually are more packed with enjoyment.

'Cube Daddy;6296300]I love that feature on the Nintendo Channel. Much to my surprise said:
Totally agree about this - it's a great way to unlock the good bonus content without having to play for hours first.

NHL 2K10: while not the best hockey game out there (the gap between 2K and EA is widening every year) it's the only choice for Wii-only gamers. 2K did a bang-up job with its Wii version though: it contains EVERY feature found in the 360/PS3 versions, with full online, leaderboards, rosters, etc. Throw in Wii MotionPlus support for 1-to-1 stickhandling, a variety of control options (including the Classic Controller), and a Wii-exclusive Mii SuperSkills competition and you've got a solid hockey offering on the Wii.

Gamespot.com and others have actually said the Wii version of NHL 2K10 is a superior game play experience over the 360/PS3 versions. Not graphically superior, but more fun and more features.
