Racial slur banned in New York
By Jeremy Cooke
BBC News, New York

The ban reflects a growing unease about using the "N-word"
The city council of New York has voted to ban the use of the word "nigger".

The resolution to ban the so-called "N-word" is largely symbolic as it carries no weight in law and those who use the word would face no punishment.

But it reflects a growing unease that the racial slur is now part of everyday conversation and that the taboo against its usage has been swept away.

The word is in common usage among sections of the younger generation in the United States.

My thoughts... should have left it alone.

That's so gay...
Good, I think a farting ban should be next. Every time I go to NYC it smells like shit.
NYC doesn't have shit on New Orleans. Nothing beats the smell of old beer, piss, and throw up.
Censorship sucks.

This is America - there should be a law about free speech or something.
This is America - where you can't offend anyone.

That's because NYC is full of it. NYC just has this oppressive stench wherever you go. I will say, though, that the best pizza place in the entire world is in Brooklyn.

I'm still going there someday el. Personally I think New Yorkers are crazy. You'd have to be to pay those bullshit prices for the cold climate they live in. Now Florida or California paying for those prices makes sense.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great place to visit. I've been there several times (my sister used to live there, in Brooklyn and then Manhattan). It's fantastic seeing the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building (it was fantastic going to the top of the WTC when it was still standing too), Central Park, the Met, etc. There are a lot of neat things to see and do. But no way in hell would I ever live there.
But using the "we can use it but you can't" is hella lame. All or nothing bitches.
If you'd like to contribute to the conversation, you can do a much better job of it if you actually read the article quoted in the OP, where it points out that those sculpting this law say it is offensive in all contexts. So, your point again is...?

As for this, it's a toothless law, and completely symbolic. What's to gripe about?

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

It was resolution, not legislation. The article is misleading. Please feel free to come to New York and say nigger all you want.

New York smells like New York, if it really smelled that bad 8 million people wouldn't live here and millions more wouldn't visit it every year.
sounds pretty useless.
Sounds like some government officials trying to justify a paycheck by doing nothing yet looking "busy" in the process.

Oh, and kniggerplz.

I think there's something about the number of times I've seen that 'ninja' icon in this thread that seems to suggest precisely what the people cited in the OP were saying about the nonchalant and casual use of the term.

i would go so far as to suggest that nigga is contextually moving away from the word "nigger" - though i can't think of an example imilar o this
This is America - where you can't offend anyone.
...except the Amish. How will they know - they don't even have the internets!:D

I like nigger Gaiden and can't wait for nigger Gaiden Sigma for :ps3:

In all seriousness, I agree with the above post(s) that it does seem pretty useless and it's the govt way of looking busy very good points indeed.

Just the fact that people feel like they need to do this speaks volumes, and it is a positive step in curbing this bad habit, even if it is symbolic in nature.

My point is the same as it was the first time I said it. Whether or not you think it adds to this conversation means nothing to me. One might argue that your need to point it out added nothing either.
if i was black i would really care about this!
If you WERE black......

If you're going to be offended, at least take care to use the proper use of the subjunctive.
if i was black i would really care about this!
Well if you don't it is no big loss. I doubt anyone was looking to you to change the world.

The parts of the black community that engage in the use of that word really are ignorant. The fact that it came to this is an embarassment to start with. It's a damn shame when Bill Cosby calls out the black community and gets ridiculed despite the fact that EVERYTHING he said is true. I take comfort in the fact that more black people are starting to speak up and want to squash the ignorance that too many people glorify.
What about cracka? I find that offensive.
Reminds me of a racial joke: Why do niggers call white people "honkies"?
Because its the last thing they hear before they get hit by the car

Anyhow. In Virginia Beach, they have what they call "Anti-Obsceneties(sp?) laws) on the boardwalk and whats called "the strip" (its the street thats right before the beach, called Atlantic Ave, Eviltude and other CAGs from this area will know what I'm sayin). They have signs posted all over with "curse word symbols" with a circle and slash thru it. fuckin stupid if you ask me. Ironicly, the local hosts of a morning rock station, FM99s Tommy and Rumble, have a parody of Eddie Grants "Electric Avenue", called "You Can't Say fuck You on Atlantic Avenue"

Well, you live in Hoboken so NYC is a vast improvement, right? IKIK

Now, isnt that specific word is supposed to be used by only the minorities in God's green earth?!?...Without having themselves get censored at all??....If anyone knows please clarify this?!?...
Well, you live in Hoboken so NYC is a vast improvement, right? IKIK
Normally Hoboken is a beautiful tree lined hollow with a bar on every corner right next to an italian deli, so I'd argue with you, but alas, today is what they call, 'Hoboken St. Patrick's Day.'

Hoboken's primary income is bars, there are more bars per square mile then anywhere else in the US and usually that's great, I love bars and the drunk girls in them even more. But somewhere along the line they got the idea that they were getting gypped on St. Pat's because everyone would skip over Hoboken and go straight to NYC. So they started celebrating it two weeks early and now every frat boy within a 100 miles comes out and pukes in the streets from 10 am until 5am.

So yes, you're right today, but give it a few days to clear and we'll be back to the town smelling of sawdust and pepperoni.

Let me ask this question: what does it have to do with this topic?
Well, you've set a new low with this comment, haven't you?
Too soon? It has to be eighteen and a half years before we can poke fun at a tragedy?

You probably need to get that sarcasm meter checked, it appears to be malfunctioning. I don't believe for an instant that Katrina was some sort of Divine Retribution, and I'm sorry to have offended you.

The earth tried to flush, but it clogged. Someone call the galactic plumber!

How ab out instead of giving the word even more meaning, everyone just ignores it? It's just a word that people give meaning to. Ignore it and the people that use it and everything is fine.
