The "N-Word" is banned.

Maybe we should collect up all the books that have the 'N Word' in it, make a big pile and burn them.

Oh wait, I think someone tried that before.

There is a big difference between literature and dumbass people acting ignorant in real life.

"...That's why we say bitch- bitch- bitch- bitch- bitch- bitch- bitch- bitch- bitch. And nigga- nigga- nigga- nigga- nigga- nigga- nigga- nigga- nigga. And fuck you if you dont like it."

But what's stopping the dumbass people that feel it's important to govern what we say from deciding what we should read as well?
As for this, it's a toothless law, and completely symbolic. What's to gripe about?
Firstly, its unconstitutional and secondly, if its admittedly a law that does nothing, why are these politicians wasting time and subsequently money thinking of, deliberating on and passing them?

I'd say thats plenty to gripe about.

The Golden Rule?

There are plenty of places with public swearing laws and hate laws. It can easily be argued that this falls into one or both categories. There is no such thing as pure free speech. You can't yell fire in a crowded room, you can't make threats to people, you can't divulge trade secrets, you caqn't start reciting test ansewrs in class, and certain porn isn't allowed. You want complete free speech you are going to have to be willing to accept some stupid, terrible, and even illegal things whether people like it or not, and I doubt anyone is wiling to accept that on principle.
There are plenty of places with public swearing laws and hate laws.
And they're generally stupid laws.
You can't yell fire in a crowded room, you can't make threats to people, you can't divulge trade secrets, you caqn't start reciting test ansewrs in class, and certain porn isn't allowed.
So therefore someone can't say nigger? That doesn't exactly follow at all. Yelling fire, making threats, reciting test answers, divulging trade secrets, and making child porn directly and negatively impacts the free exercise of other people's rights. Using a certain word, unless as part of a threat or harassment, does not.
Using a certain word, unless as part of a threat or harassment, does not.
I disagree from experience.

I had a black McDonald's employee look at me a call me the word while I was in line with other people in the restaurant. I never knew the person but she felt comfortable calling me that. It wasn't a threat, it wasn't harassment. But it violated my right to be treated with deceny as a customer.

Maybe its the kind of thing people have to have experience with to understand, but my mother is from pre-Civil Rights Virginia, and my dad from pre-Civil Rights Mississippi so I have more respect for myself than to try to empower that word.

The only time that free speech isn't necessarily valid is when property rights are brought into the matter. Such as, if I own a business, and I have a rule that you can't say "potato," I should have the full right to kick someone out of my establishment for saying "potato." However, on public property (or on private property where there are no speech rules), I would say that anything goes. While this may not be smart or the right thing to do, it should be totally legal and protected to say anything you want on public property. No matter how hateful or offensive, it should be legal. The Constitution promises us free speech (although our government hasn't exactly kept their word).
What about cracka? I find that offensive.
Wait if they banned cracka then uh oh my username on a ton of sites would be banned NOOoooo.

You don't a right to be treated with decency as a customer. If they want to treat you like shit, as long as they aren't breaking any anti-discrimination, business, or health laws, then they can treat you like shit. If you don't like it, you can leave.

Oh, and nigga is a term of endearment among many in the black community. The employee thought it was perfectly ok to call you that as she had a reasonable expectation of you responding positively to it. Being black, you should by this point in your life have a reasonable expecation of being called it on a relatively regular basis by other black people, even ones you hardly or don't know at all. Therefore, your panties shouldn't get in a twist when it does happen, as there is nothing bad about the whole situation, since it is merely the sign of a community taking something negative and turning it into something positive. It's taking a word that white people once wielded as a symbol of power over the black community and turning into something insignificant and powerless. Essentially, taking the bat that white people had once swung across the face of blacks and then doing fake golf swings with it in front of them.

Living in SE Michigan and going to school in Detroit. I hear "nigga" more times every day than "the". Maybe I should have narrowed "the black community" down to "young black community."

Well that makes more sense then since a majority of teens actions, speech, and style of dress are influenced by the music they listen to. Teenagers might be expected to say it or be called it, but as an adult I do not. In no way should I expect to called it by anyone, let alone people I don't know.

Then perhaps it's a generational gap. Every generation has its own slang and what not.

I disagree and fortunately the law is on my side. It is a crime to incite a riot or violence, and rightfully so. Otherwise, leaders of despicable groups could order their lackeys to commit violent acts against people without fear of any reprecussions themselves.
Banning a word is lame. But using the "we can use it but you can't" is hella lame. All or nothing bitches.
You really don't understand why white people shouldn't use this word? Let me put it this way...do you have any siblings? What if a group of kids were calling your 'brother' retarded or gay or whatever. You would become a bit emotional, right? Even though you have called your 'brother' those same things at some point? Yeah, now multiply that by a few hundred years of rape, humiliation, and slavery. There ya go.

Ah... right, you live in Melvindale supposedly, which if memory serves is practically Allen Park, boy there sure are a lot of black people there

What do you mean by going to school in Detroit... let me guess Wayne State, or better yet Henry Ford!
It was resolution, not legislation. The article is misleading. Please feel free to come to New York and say nigger all you want.

New York smells like New York, if it really smelled that bad 8 million people wouldn't live here and millions more wouldn't visit it every year.
As Cheese pointed out...it's a resolution, it doesn't mean anything except that the NYC City Council thinks that saying the n-word is naughty.

Now the fact that they banned aluminum bats -- that's a real ban. For those of you who don't live in the Capital District of New York and are far too interested in NY State politics -- here's a link to the bat ban. Bloomberg says he'll veto it...but it really doesn't matter as they have a high enough majority to override any veto he throws at them.

All very good reasons why you shouldn't use it, but has no bearing on whether it should be prohibited. Free speech has consequences. If you say nigger around the wrong person, you can expect to have your teeth knocked out, just as if you called the wrong person a fat pig. You have every right to say those things, but you shouldn't be surprised if you get an undesirable reaction.
