The Office - Season 3 - Discussion [possible spoilers]

Yeah, but he almost always causes it himself, which is why you can never feel completely and totally sympathetic toward him. I mean, you do feel bad for him quite a bit, but there's always that nagging at the back of your head that's thinking he kinda deserves some of the situations he gets into.

Said many times before - this is what makes The Office so great. You see an amazing array of sides of each person, and the show can effectively elicit different emotions from the audience with deft ease.

@Grave: Mkay. Again, I was in a horribly bad environment for watching the episode. I'll have to...acquire it soon for a second viewing.

I don't think I'd agree that Michael deserves her (I guess I don't feel THAT bad for him), and I definitely think Jan deserves better. But like Grave said, it'll probably make for a few interesting episodes.

I don't even see Michael as a character, really. He's more like just a piece of the environment. A prop for the more interesting (and funnier) people to play off of. But maybe I'm the only one.

That's great. I love Firefly (it's one of my all time favorite Sci-Fi series) and I've just started watching Buffy on DVD and I really enjoy it. Hopefully he'll also star in his episode, he was very funny in the Veronica Mars episode he was in.
 
It's too bad Dwight quit though I'm sure he'll be back soon. He's too popular to leave forever.
Tonight's episodes was one of the funniest episodes in a long time. So many great moments. It was great when Ryan was meeting with those black people who all knew and seemed to be friends with Stanley, and he was so scared all he could do was say "Hello".
I was laughing so hard when Stanley was laughing at Ryan in the car.
Jim and Dwight's sale call was also really funny, from the slap to Jim calling Kelly and hanging up on her once she started talking. They seem to work really well together.

I also think Dwight will be back, or that Mikey will go back to get him. I felt angry at Andy but I busted out laughing at the very end when Angela gives him the glare of death. I wonder what she'll do.

Favorite part: Stanley's maniacal laugh.

the scene where micheal is yelling at dwight to find out why he was in NY and said worked long and hard, dwight responding thats what she said was classic.
 
That may be my favorite episode of the season.

I loved how they split up the groups and followed each separately. The big cast allows for some great new interactions between cast members each week. Each of the sales calls was hilarious, especially Ryan and Stanley's. Can't WAIT for the repeat of this one.

Oh, and Dwight will be back. There's no doubt in my mind about that.
 
Great references to the Amazing Race (teams of two, Dwight sitting in the backseat -- Jim in the first, the camera angles in the car).

Jim slapping Dwight was too good..I had to rewind it and watch it again on the spot.
 
Come on people. You know Dwight will be back. Actually, I predict Andy will be the one gone by the conclusion of this two-parter, perhaps dispatched with a letter opener through the heart from Angela. Andy alluded to the dwindling Stamford crew himself, citing "Ten Little Indians." He will go, and then a week or two after that you know who'll get the 'ol heave ho, not that I won't feel bad for her. Of course, at that point Pam will be back with her fiancee and Jim will be screwed and we'll be back to square one.

I really hope the writers find room for Andy and especially Karen. It does look like Andy will be leaving soon though - Michael wasn't too happy with him in the last episode.

I hope so too, because getting rid of everyone and going back to the status quo would be a VERY shitty way of making everything full circle.

You could be right, there. But I think Andy will be gone sooner, rather than later. As others have noted, he's fallen out of favor with Michael and once Michael finds out that Andy was responsible for setting Dwight up, it's all over for him.

...but knowing how much of a smart dumb ass Andy is, he'll find his way out of it. I hope Andy dosn't leave since I like him so much, even after all the crap he did, which pissed me off as well.

on a side note since I don't watch TV too much: new episode this thursday?
 
I don't know, this episode, and last episode, didn't really have me laughing the way Season 1 and 2 did as well as the beginning of Season 3.

It's still a great show, but it's not just laugh out loud funny these days, at least imo.

I mean, this episode was kind of predictable... and usually The Office is anything but predictable.
 
Can anyone fill me in on how and why Dwight left/was fired?
I seem to have lost an episode in the depths of my DVR that I need to find.

pretty good episode, besides some of the scenes mentioned earlier I loved dwight at staples. When he told the elderly women I will be right here if you need any help, or his coworker talk about where he used to work. Followed up by her saying how she didn't like him.
 
LOL...When Michael left to go get Dwight, I told my wife, "Watch, this is going to be just like 'An Officer and a Gentleman.'" And sure enough, what music was playing on the PA at Staples? LOVE LIFT US UP WHERE WE BELONG, baby. Too bad Dwight didn't carry Michael out in his arms.

Those of you holding out hope that Andy will somehow stay, sorry. He's gone. And honestly, as grating as he was in the last two episodes (admittedly, intentional on the part of the writers), good riddance. If they're nice, they'll give him an elaborate sendoff in the next episode. If they're not, they'll simply reveal at the beginning of the next episode that he was fired/quit/went insane and is wandering in the wilderness. You know you've got issues when Michael, the KING of oblivousness, is bewildered by your total lack of self-awareness.

Karen too seems to have been given her walking papers. Explanation for those of you who haven't been in a grown-up relationship: When you tell your significant other that you still have feelings for your ex, it's over.

Best throwaway lines:

Jim: "I liked you better as the temp."
Ryan: "So did I."

Karen: "I'm really busy. I've got 12 new clients from Dwight and each of them is password protected with a different mythical animal."

Best moment: Jim's expression and slowly hanging up the phone after Andy punches a hole in the wall.
 
Andy losing it and punching the wall was hilarious but definitly awkward. Dwight staring at the old lady was also hilarious.
 
I guess I wanted to see more of Dwight working at Staples... along with more of the new team being brought in. It's like the writers of the show are reluctant to make ANY sort of permanent / semi-permanent change.

I knew they were going to axe Andy / Karen eventually, so I never grew to give a shit about their characters at all. Karen in particular is devoid of any sort of personality, which is sad when every character on that show HAS some kind of larger than life personality.

Like I said earlier, the show is just getting predictable at this point... I don't think the writing and the plots are nearly as good as Season 2. It's still one of the best comedy shows on television (even a bad season is better than most of the comedies on tv) but it's like the writers are scared to make any sort of change at all.

I think some of the new characters would have been great fits to the team that they axed WAY too early - the overly fat guy, the mother, the best moment of the season for me is when they other black guy gave Stanley that gesture and Stanley was like "what the fuck?".

I think the opportunity to expand the show into new directions was completely lost... and where has Creed been lately? And Meredith has just kind of... been there. And I don't think Kelly was even in last night's episode. I used to like the diverse cast and how they were all feature in their own right, but now the focus is, by and large, on the star characters, and every once in awhile we get a one liner from Kevin or Stanley.

I don't know... I still really like the show but so far it's not blowing me away like Season 2 did.
 
I love her awkwardness towards the camera after saying that like, and the Jim-Ryan exchange was awesome. Andy going nuts was incredible, and the visual of Dwight in a Staples outfit was disturbing. I viewed him going there as an associate as his way of showing loyalty to Dunder-Mifflin - he didn't use his long tenure there to try and get a better deal, like Josh, he went there as just another employee, which I liked. I also liked his three giant folders about himself for potential employers. The part with Jim and Karen at the end was fantastic, and Ryan putting accents on the lemonade to fit the "Mexican Lemonade" listing ruled.

There were two seasons worth of episodes to develop the initial characters, so you saw plenty of them. Now they are stuck either developing the new characters in the middle of a series, or advancing the plot.

Personally I've never been a big fan of the new characters, so I'm not too upset that they'll go, though I think they could have been stretched out a little longer (they may still yet). I'm waiting for Roy to rear his ugly head again.

I would have rather they stayed... maybe one of them were to quit, causing Michael to kind of be like "Wow, why did this guy leave?" as he kind of questioned himself when the fat man left.

To be fair, almost all of the supporting cast was developed during Season 2... they should have taken the beginning of Season 3 to flesh out some more people, instead of just Karen / Andy / Jim. Hell, I didn't even realize that branch had more than those 3 people. Just a quick joke or clip of some of the other ones and then further elaborate on them when you get to Scranton.

While you speak the truth in the real world, I expect Karen will stay around for a bit longer. Either Pam will get back together or be presumed to have gotten back together with her fiance, or Jim will have a heart-to-heart with Karen to explain that she misunderstood what he was saying - I think they're going to drag this out FOREVER (I'm thinking Ross and Rachel in Friends) - though I will respect the show more if they don't.

Still, while there has been some "you've been waiting for this" hype, I have not seen nearly the drama build that you usually get before a show finally hooks up the two characters everybody knows are supposed to be together. All signals point to things not falling into place for Jim and Pam for some time now, and I expect Karen is all too convenient of a plot-progressing device to make her exit.

I could be wrong, but it just seems the writers tried awfully hard to write those two together as a couple and have since done nothing with them as a couple. Surely after trying to hard they have more in store.
