So if Android can mange itself, why do a bunch of programs I don't use mysteriously start themselves? They do hog my memory!
Some need to be running, or need to run so that another program can run. I really don't know how else to convince you, I mean Google wouldn't just leave out something important like memory management.

So, just my droid then? No one else's original droid is slow as crap?

Maybe I have too many pictures on it or something. I don't know what the problem is.

I'll be getting a Droid X in a couple days. What are some must dos and must have apps besides the ones in the OP?

Has anyone had any issues downloading the latest Angry Birds Seasons update? I've tried for the past 3 or so days and it won't download, just hangs. I've even tried uninstalling the app and it just won't download.

It looks sexy; a physical keyboard is my one absolute requirement for a smartphone. If the hardware is impressive - some form of dual core chip, decent RAM, etc - it's a serious contender for "BattleChicken's Next phone of the 2 years".

On the other hand, I've been very happy with my G1, so HTC's next badass QWERTY keyboard phone will likely be what I purchase.

Yeah, I think from now on the Droid line will be Moto's kind of mid-tier phone. The Bionic will probably be their next flagship phone on Verizon. There is supposed to be an X2 coming, but it's basically just a rehashed X.

I'd like a Xoom, but $600 is still too much for me.

I must say I'm not thrilled by the idea of LTE as its just another way to up-charge since its a forced service, unless they give it free but I doubt that.

For now 4G LTE is the same price as 3G. I suspect that will change down the road. Honestly if it was say $10 more a month for unlimited or at least a reasonable cap then I could live with that. But we'll see.
I'm on the $15/150mb plan and don't feel that paying more is worth it, since I use a computer.
That is true for your needs. For my needs however I do music streaming on the go along with checking my e-mail, GPS, and other things. That alone makes the unlimited plan worthwhile for me.
How much faster is LTE going to be than 3G?
IIRC 4G LTE should be around the 15-20mb area which is a huge step up over 3G. Especially for stuff such as streaming video (ie: Netflix, Hulu, etc).

i agree with you on the g1 being decent, and a keyboard being necessary.

Sprint's Samsung Epic is really awesome, definitely better than the G2, so I switched to Sprint. Definitely keep an open mind because there's always something better coming out.

Ive heard the tiered data plans for 4g hit on the 25th, so i might be forced to get a Thunderbolt before then just to get a unlimited 4g data plan locked in. Love my incredilble tho, its just fantastic.

I'd read about the tiered data plans, but then last week I saw a leaked doc that still had it at unlimited for $30, so I have no idea anymore.

No kidding. Cell phone plans started out really complicated (and really expensive). Then for the briefest of periods, they got simple (and affordable). Then the companies realized some people would still pay more, so they got complicated (and less affordable) again.

Read on my phone that chances are Sprint is going to show off the EVO 3d and the new EVO tablet some time next week.

Played with the Thunderbolt Thursday night, because GF hasn't upgraded her phone in over 2 years. It's response felt faster than my Droid X. It downloaded about 1.5MB/s in the market place.

The one in the store felt really light, but I think it might be because they took out the battery, since it's supposed to be 6.23 oz.

Unfortunately, I also heard that the phone dies with about 3 hours of use. That's insanely bad.

Because of the battery, GF isn't sure she wants to wait for a Bionic, or to just get a Droid X.

I'm really interested in that wifi xoom, but I've read a lot of conflicting reports over what HD video it can play (or rather what the tegra2 can play). I have a lot of 720p avis and move, but I don't know what simple baseline or high baseline means - and apparently the xoom can't play high baseline encoded HD videos. This seems like a dealbreaker to me, although I suppose the alternative is waiting for another processor (which most tablets seem to have the tegra2), get an ipad (which I'm fairly certain would be more limiting), or get no tablet. I really want a tablet but the information about what the xoom can do seems to be all over the map.

If you can or want to wait, then wait to see when the next Galaxy tab will be released. Should be 3.0, but wait to see if they have put all the codecs in it like they did with the Galaxy S phones and tab. When I had the Vibrant, it could play a 1080p video without any problems whatsoever without the need of converting it.
I would just hold off to see what is announced at CTIA. Check out from this engadget.com.
Thanks for that link! I'll tell my wife to get the shift because "I just don't think i need a new phone right now" ;)

Hmm, well the article at Engadget is about a tablet that is supposed to be like the flyer, which looks nice but I really want a 10-inch tablet - I think 7 would be too small for me.

I am getting very interested in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (which should be called 2, come on Samsung, I mean really. I suppose this leave them open to a Tab2 in the 7" variety?), but it seems like it will have a Tegra2 processor as well, which, by my understanding, is the bottleneck on being able to play high-baseline videos. I have heard the Tab 7" plays EVERYTHING smooth as butter, so I anxiously await the release of the 10" version to see if they have this sorted out. Only thing I see missing is the HDMI out port, which I don't know that I would ever use anyway, and I don't see any mention of MicroSD in that article (but this one says it has it). Depending on price (which I hear is going to be very competitive with the iPad), I think I've got a new favorite tablet.

Why is everyone always concerned about video coedcs, players like rockplayer and vital play practically everything.

Well this is what I want confirmed. Are people having success with playing high-baseline AVI/MKV using software solutions on the Xoom? I can't find anyone saying they are having no problems, just that there will probably be a better software solution soon.

Well everything plays on my Fascinate and Nook Color with rockplayer, and I'd have a hard time believing it wouldn't on the Xoom.
Unfortunately, I also heard that the phone dies with about 3 hours of use. That's insanely bad.
There's a software glitch from my understand that is causing the battery issue. Word has it that there's an software fix coming in the next week or so. Outside of that the Thunderbolt is an great phone and worth getting if you want a nice snappy phone with 4G LTE.

It's beyond me how phone manufacturers miss these obvious problems with their phones. They know about them and just release them with the intent of fixing it later. Of course sometimes those fixes never come.
I've heard everything plays well on the Tab as well, and should work well with the Xoom, but that there are problems with this Tegra2 chip that makes certain videos unplayable. What I'd love is to see a review of the media capabilities of the Xoom.

This thread better explains the issues: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=969557
I see. A few people seem to think it's a codec issue, but that shouldn't matter with programs like rockplayer. That article on the boxee box says it's the tegra 2 itself, which given the report I'd say is more likely, otherwise they would just added the codec to the boxee software. Surprised Nvidia didn't fix that. Although the Viewsonic GTablet has been out a while and is also Tegra 2 based, don't remember hearing problems with videos on it.

The rumor is that the 6 months of delays were to fix the issue, so I'm skeptical it'll ever be fixed. The thing is, people SAY it's a software issue BECAUSE that's what happened on a different phone. This might not be a software issue, so they just released it.

I've heard it said it might be a problem with not utilizing the gpu and offloading everything to the CPU, which simply can't handle high end video. Some believe that we'll see xoom optimized players. I sure hope so.

I guess if it a lot of the upcoming tegra 2 based tablets have the same issues we'll know more about it.

Anyone else running a nookColor "Tablet"

Im currently rocking Rooted Stock (AutoNooter), Nookie Froyo on an 8gb c6 card, and CM7 on my other 8gb c6 card.

I'm dissapointed (but not surprised) about all of these refreshed versions of previous phones. They're doing it with the Incredible and Droid X that I know of, at it really seems like me to be just a grab at milking existing designs basically. I would never buy one of those or the X2 knowing something like the Bionic is coming soon.

Opera Mini and Opera Mobile got updates. Didn't use Mobile, since I think Dolphin HD was faster. Not sure about now.

Opera Mini, however, feels even faster. Also, pinch zoom is added, just like it was in Mobile. I'm not used to it yet, since I'm used to tapping once to zoom. Now it's a double tap. Also, open in new tab now opens in background, a feature I loved when I first started using Opera (before Firefox came out).

Also, reload doesn't redraw the screen anymore. Just noticed that after posting.

I don't like on opera mini if up go to website, then exit the app completely correctly (back button), then next time I click a link or open opera again, it goes back to the last open page.. Very annoying!

That's cause you can't close opera that way. There's no built in way to do so atm, and it's one of the features people had been requesting. And tab restore should be an option anyways, like it is on desktop.
