wouldn't do it homey. why don't you flash something like SuperD or Cyanogen on there since they are optimized for slower processors (i believe SuperD was specifically designed for the g1). 2.2 would probably destroy a g1 speed-wise.

i ran superd on my g1 up until i finally got my EPIC (which i flashed Froyo on to last week).
I should have clarified, i meant cyanogen 6, which is a 2.2 rom that's had good success with the G1.

I'm actually in the process of doing it right now... I certainly hope it goes smoothly!

My performance on the G1 with cyanogen 6 is just as good as with 1.6. The only thing 'wrong' so far is my SMS alerts don't blink anymore - i figure it's trying to light the trackball rather than use the battery light.
thanks!
There's also androidcentral.com. That's where I hang out the most.

I'm in the process of doing it now, just started backing up everything just in case something goes wrong. At this point I couldn't wait for VZW anyway since the over the air update wouldn't work with my setup.

Post impressions as soon as you can. I'm not sure if I have time today or tomorrow to try this out, but as soon as I do, I think I'm going for it.

So far so good. Flash is working and works pretty well. Sometimes it can be a little choppy, depends on the site. some little things have changed, there is a mobile data toggle in the notification bar up top now. Some new options in the shutdown menu. Overall things seem snappier, which they should be.

Installing the rom itself took only a minute of two, but I didn't have to do everything as I already had the recovery flashed for example. Try these instructions here.

I gotta say, all of those instructions seemed intimidating but it worked! My Fascinate is now on Froyo...fuck you Samsung, and fuck you Verizon!

Congrats Linkin. Another debloated rom was actually just released,a nd even though I used those in the past I think this time I'll either leave it stock or take out some of the bloat myself. Those clean roms really are clean, they strip out everything not essential, and really It's more hassle putting things back then to take things out of the stock. I'd ahve to put back the samsung music player that I actually like, the thinkfree office, the samsung video player, plus the live wallpapers etc. Easier just to take out what I don't want then to put back what I do.

Oh and they added the media hub app in this, just a video rental service basically. If they really wanted people to use that they could at least give you a free rental to try it.

Thanks.

Yeah I saw the debloated one on XDA but I think I'll stick around with stock for a while longer. The phone does actually seem faster now, even browsing is a bit quicker. The only thing I've noticed is that coming back to the home screens from an app take a while to load the applications, my guess is that it looks at the SD card to see if there are any apps in there and that's what's delaying this a bit. Also, they got some new font settings, pretty interesting but nothing really cool that stands out.

Yeah, it's nothing groundbreaking, but all the little additions are nice. Now we can get to complaining about not having 2.3.

I haven't tried that yet, but I read about it the other day.

I wish virgin mobile had a bit better phones, I would definitely go for their cheapest plan. It's just their best Android phone (Samsung Intercept) is still fairly low end.

edit-Actually now I see why it's so cheap, they have really poor coverage.

Correction:

Virgin Mobile's best phone is a LG Optimus with Froyo.

And I've been looking closer at VM, especially since they have a Froyo phone and for my level of voice usage it'd cost me 70% less to go with them.

But then again, the Optimus can't use Flash, and I use that quite a bit when I'm out and about.

Eh, depends on what you mean by better. The Optimus V has froyo, but the Intercept seems to have better specs and it's supposed to get froyo soon from what I understand. But yeah, the price is great, but their coverage map looks pretty spotty. Seems like it would be perfect for around town and stuff, but there are plenty of areas they claim have no coverage at all.

The Intercept has a similar, if not the same processor as the old Moment.

And in using the Moment and Hero at the same time, the differences between them weren't noticeable IMO.

Plus the Intercept has a really bad screen with an awkward resolution.

When I set up someone's VM Intercept, it was laggy as hell. And Angry Birds was basically unplayable on it.

I was reading over at howardforums and most people seemed to think they were around equal, those that loaded froyo on the intercept even more so. Guess it's mostly down to physical keyboard or on-screen.

Is it a given that the fascinate will be getting an official OTA update to froyo? Has Samsung/Verizon said it will happen?

They've said since last August IIRC, they just keep delaying it and no official data has ever been given.

I would strongly recommend that if you want Froyo, you update it yourself by following the instructions on the link that Clak posted a few posts ago. Very easy, and Froyo on the Fascinate is awesome!

I'm usually one to tinker with my electronics (thats why I went android instead of iphone), I am just apprehensive because I use my phone for work. I would be screwed if I bricked it.

Does the fact that the leak exists mean that it has been officially developed, or is it something someone made from scratch?

It's officially developed, its just a matter of time.

That is an actual leak from VZW and/or Samsung. So yes, they're working on it, when it will be released officially I don't know.
hoping for good things from Sprint tomorrow. if nothing spectacular, i'll be getting my EVO shortly.
Original EVO? I think I would've waited.

After playing with both the past few days, I have to say the stock Optimus is way better than the stock Intercept.

The Optimus had a Linpack score between 7-8 and the Intercept never broke 2.5. The Optimus also got ~450 Quadrant score. The Intercept couldn't even run Quadrant.

I now own a Intercept the 'was broken' according to a family member:)roll:), but it work just fine. And quickly glancing at xda, it looks like the Virgin Mobile Intercept is a PITA to root. :bomb:

Anyone here interested in the Xoom? Did you see it's going to only come in one configuration for $800 on 2/24 AND supposedly require a month's of VZW data to unlock WiFi?!?

Way to kill the baby before it's birthed Moto...

A friend just ordered the Optimus so I'm hoping to get a look at it, doesn't matter for me, I'm just curious. Yeah Motorola really managed to screw the Xoom up, it's way too expensive (makes an iPad look cheap in comparison)and the thing about the WIFI is just ridiculous. Makes me want to just get a Nook and root it. Or even that Viewsonic G-tablet, supposed to be pretty good after rooting aside form the screen viewing angle.
Original EVO? I think I would've waited.
I have waited, and this Dual Screen Kyocera's not doing it for me. Any idea on when the Evo's getting replaced?

The Optimus is terrific. I had it for about a month and aside from the Evo, it just about mops the floor with the competition in terms of Android performance. Its main flaw is that it has almost nothing in the way of features and the camera is like flip phone era low end.

I've been out of the loop, I just know there is "better" coming or here. I suppose if you haven't upgraded in a long while the EVO is ok. Isn't the Dual Screen Kyocera pretty new.. ? I just heard about it today. Last I heard (I think from here) is that the EVO Shift 4G is the replacement for the EVO, but looking at it seemed more FAIL than anything.

Edit: Oh Christ... That was their big "out of this world" announcement? I just looked up more about the Kyocera, I think you might want to jump ship. Sprint isn't going to be around much longer. Geez...

VM just got the Optimus. It's $150, no contract, and $25 a month with unlimited data/text and 300 voice minutes. I'm a stickler for a keyboard and I think I'm going to get the Optimus.

The Intercept has been dubbed the unwanted stepchild of Samsung's phones, since it never was meant to exist. It was a quick fix to one of their other phones sucking ass (I forget which one).

As for their coverage, you really can't believe their maps. I'm apparently not in their coverage area at home, but I still get 3-4 bars all the time. They use the Sprint network (without the roaming onto Verizon), so if Sprint is good for you, VM should be good.

I'm debating between the Intercept and the Optimus. I want a keyboard, I really do. But I can't justify the extra cash for a phone that overall is crappier (Intercept), when I can get a fully capable phone for cheaper.

The Froyo update for the Intercept is coming "Spring 2011" so that means anywhere from now till June. Yeah...

Aside from the faster processor and the keyboard, the Optimus pretty much cleans the Intercept out in performance, due to the graphics unit on the Optimus being able to help keep from overloading the CPU.

Yeah, that was their big update, and I'm not impressed. Hardware aside, I don't see a lot of developers going crazy to develop android apps that only work on one phone.

The EVO Shift 4g isn't meant to replace the EVO, it's meant to be closer to an "average joe" model that's a bit less powerful, has a sliding keyboard, and a bit lower price tag.

From what I've read, the EVO Shift is actually more powerful. The trade-off is that the screen isn't TV sized. If I were to get any phone right now, I'd get it but I don't want the $10 charge.

Sprint's Samsung Epic is still my fav of all the Android handsets out.

You pretty much HAVE to root/flash it though.

That Kyocera phone is such a let down. The Experia Play actually looks like it might be decent depending on what games they release for it, but that Kyocera...thing just looks awkward.
I'd get it but I don't want the $10 charge.
Is that how the it works... ? The min. I get a new phone I get charge $10 more? if so fail... Might as well leave Sprint and go some where else.

Just about ALL smartphones now activated on Sprint have the $10 charge, 4G or not.

With the Hero using 3g wont you get that extra 10 tacked on? I thought it was all data phones due to people using them are all going to get the extra 10 bucks added on. Sounds dumb to me to make someone pay more to use their phone because they are actually using it.

if you already own it, you won't get the extra fee; it's just for new smartphone purchases.

I'm not happy about the fee either, but with my employee discount it's still a better price than i can get anywhere else for my family.

It kills me, they encourage people to get these phones then decide it's getting too expensive to support them all so they need to charge an extra $10. It's such bullshit.

I've been happily running the early official Froyo build for it quite happily. Latest rumor (and lord knows there have been a bunch) is that the final build of Froyo is done and may be out on the 21st. But we (Epic 4G users) have been lied to about Froyo's release since Sept so...

It's because a lot of people were opting to not get the Evo or the Epic due to the charge and thus they weren't selling. This was bad because they were leasing out the 4G coverage from Clear and now weren't making enough money to cover the expenses. Add in that Clear has limited coverage and reports of them going under. So Sprint pretty much said any smartphone gets that extra $10. Now they can charge people who are going to upgrade, 4G or not, to pay off Clear and can also offset any loss in profit because of the people tethering. They also can now push their 4G phones without a handicap.

The average smart phone user only uses 150 megs. I thought I was actually a light user, since I don't do that much with it outside of checking CAG and streaming music (24-32kbps streams) once a week at work. I'm at 1.3 gigs for the month, with a few days left, and I don't even tether.

Though I pay more for my 1.3 gigs than the 2 gig limit plan on AT&T, so I guess I still can't really see why they're raising the prices unless the average is over 2 gigs.

Edit: I'm not on Sprint, I just mean if they budgeted that $25 is about 2 GB, the average usage is way below that and they should be more than able to cover costs.
