The Official E-Bay Scalping Thread

You know what I do with the formatting: I create my text in Word and just paste into into the Ebay box. If you ask me, I think the new sell format on Ebay sucks. It didn't give me any problems with my listing this time, but I usually quit to the old format in frustration.

Went with the new version this time because I sold some speakers last week and it wouldn't allow me to upload pictures (Kept giving me errors). And that wasn't on option with the PS3.
If you end an auction early is it still possible to go through ebay with the sale?

And also, what happens when you cancel a bid? I have some people who I think are scammers bidding, but it's early and the price isn't up too high yet. Should I even bother cancelling or blocking them?
Bump on my question. I need help quick!
Bump on my question. I need help quick!
I would block any early bidders who you think are scammers. Otherwise they would probably bid later when the price is higher. When you cancel a bid I believe the only thing that happens is the bid you cancel gets removed.

Do you all think I should do a 1 day or a 3 day auction?

1, it will cost you more if you set a reserve and it doesnt sell, but noone really looks past the first page usually

Right now? I'd do a 1 day auction and set a realistic Buy It Now price on it like $1,999 and be happy you made some nice cash.

There's 16 thousand PS3's up right now and yours isn't any different than anybody else's. My guess is that prices are only going to go drop from now on...

Anybody else not being able to select a 1 day auction? And I have 417 feedback with no negatives, so I am qualified to use 1 day auction. At first I thought ebay blocked 1 day auctions, but there are a lot of 1 day auctions being posted now.

I have 2... so I will sell one now and one a couple weeks before Christmas. I just posted it as a 1 day auction, not sure why you're having a problem with that.

Now I get to sit here and watch the bidding begin :)
This is the first, and last time I ever sell anything on ebay.
I was like that ever I sold my psp. Damn scammers. Whats worse is that disconcering feeling when they get your personal information. Alot of these 0 feedbackers, which are vengeful, probably just want your e-mail address to spam it with scams and junk.
sold mine for $2550...im happy...after ebay fees that should be about an $1800 profit :whistle2:D
Bregh, I should've held out for more monies =(

I'm a little bit pissed off at ebay right now. I listed mine about 4 hours ago and it doesn't show up in the search. Every auction listed after mine up to this very minute shows up - but not mine. What the hell?? I made sure I didn't misspell anything and I'm searching on the exact terms in my auction title. WTF?? There's so many of them on there now that it is unlikely I would be getting bids yet anyway, but it is damn near impossible when I am the only one who can see the damn thing (by doing a direct link from my current auction list).
I just listed with a BIN of $2,000 if any CAG wants it (yeah right!)
that's the only way to do it and avoid a bunch of hassle imo. bin and force pay upon winning.

I'm having the same problem. Let me know if you find anything out, I'm searching like crazy.

Its not just you. My sister tried to find my auction earlier and she couldn't find it. Even when she looked at my profile, it did not show. She did a local search and it wasn't there either. Ebay's search sucks.

If you are selling one you'd better list it with buy it now and payment due immediately. I've watched about 30 auctions end in the last 10 minutes and all but probably 3 were won by people with less than 5 feedback.

Is it just me or does it look like closing prices for the PS3 have come down just from this afternoon? (I didn't attempt to get one, but have done a few completed auction searches out of curiosity.)

I see some are closing below $1500 now. (These are ones put up for a straight bid, not BINs.)

In other news the son of a lady I know picked up a PS3 with a few extras today (total cost $850) walked outside and sold it to somebody for 4 grand! Holy crap. Not sure if he had been planning to keep it or not, but that's an offer you just don't pass up. (Seems hard to believe, but I'm assuming the guy didn't lie to his mom.)

So once word gets out that this is the only shipment until next year, do you think the prices will go up, or have we maxed out?

The flucuation patterns are strange, a PS3 will go for $1700 profit/$80 shipping, while the one right after went for $1500 profit/FREE shipping. Both sellers have good feedback, same goes for the buyer.

I also notice some, somewhat generious BINS for $1600.

I agree. There doesn't seem to be any sort of steady rise or fall to the day, either. It's not like it started off big and got progressively smaller, either. While the day started big, it has alternated between lower (2000ish or lower) to a sudden quick surge closing in on 3000.

Odd.

Yes, I have one up. No, I'm not going to shill it here. Just making conversation, but also stating my interests so you know my bias.

I got mine from Best Buy.. waited since Wednesday.. put it on CL for $2,000. No calls yet. Might put it on ebay tomorrow if nothing goes through. The Baltimore CL is flooded with these... I've seen about 20 or so listings.
So once word gets out that this is the only shipment until next year, do you think the prices will go up, or have we maxed out?
What? Seriously?

Dang, Sony.

There was a story done on the local Austin Tx news where some guy got two family members to sit in line with him to get a total of 3. One to keep and the others to sell to cover the first one etc etc. He was on the news bragging how someone was comming over to buy one of them for 2400.00 etc.

Yeah, word is starting to trickle out (offically, from unofficial sources, of course) that this is IT. If you were thinking of putting yours up Phrostbite, I'd do it tonight, because the craze will probably hit later tonight/into the morning/afternoon as word gets out.

Did you revise the item. If so it will take an extra 2-6 hours to pop up in the search as ebay has to reindex the item.

You end the auction early w/ the option to sell to the highest bidder. This way it is done through paypal.

Yes, right at the very beginning I did. Then I just revised it again a few minutes ago and NOW, 7 hours after I listed it, it is in the search pages. Neither time did I change the title in any way though. But I noticed there are many more around and before mine as well. I think it was just a glitch and now they are all showing.

Great, so 7 hours into the 24 people can actually see the damn thing .

I guarantee this is not the last shipment this year.

People said the same thing about the 360 last year. All the retailers said the next shipments would be in April. I walked into a Store in March and got one.

If you think Sony isn't going to capitalize on the craze and get more out for Christmas you are naive. Now it may not be a whole lot more, but there will be some.

The news today quoted Sony as saying they would ship another 600,000 before the years end.

I've been watching since last night and I believe the average closing bid has come down about $100-150 in the last 24 hours. Seems to be simple supply and demand. I think people who are willing to pay these prices (parents?, rich kids?, lazy people?) are realizing that with such an influx of auctions they're likely to find a cheaper auction in a couple of days.

If I had to guess though, I would say that prices will likely go back up the closer to Christmas we get. Fewer buyers by then but those who are still left will be more driven to purchase even at a higher cost. Plus there are likely to be less auctions at that time too.

I'm kind of mad that no one has bitten on my Buy It Now auction. I keep dropping the price, and I've had 78 views (I took out an ad on fark.com to send some traffic my way). Tomorrow will be INSANE with all the 1 day auctions ending. Hopefully I can sell it then...

When does your end? Mine hasn't moved off 5 views since the first 10 minutes - an we're on the 9th hour now. I know it will get more looks in the last hour or so, but still, this is ridiculous. My BIN is much lower than most of the dufuses out there (with their $3000 and $5000 BIN's ) and I have 95% of other sellers beat in total feedback/percentage/and number of recent gaming-related auctions. Though I fear all these newbie buyers don't take much of that into consideration, unfortunately.

I didn't realize edits caused problems either. I listed and others around me were showing, but not mine. So I kept adding, and revising. Hoping this would jump start the oversight. Took about 4 hours. In my nervous stage of multiple edits, I changed the BIN from 1779.99 to 1899.99 to 1999.99 before it actually went live. So it definetly worked out for the best in my case... though I was screaming some obscenities at ebay at the time.

I think I got a NPB, which fucking blows. If they don't pay or contact me by mid-morning tomorrow, I am doing a Second Chance Offer. The fact that people are willing to screw up other people's auctions is awful. Whats just as bad, however, is the fact that so many people on this board condone that behaviour. On the thread in which a guy posted a picture of his five PS3's, so many people were suggesting bidding on his items and not paying for them (even though he never actually mentioned eBay once.) It's sickening that people who are supposed to be helping each other out would stoop to such a low level. Anyway, sorry about that little rant, but yeah, the rapid pace at which these new NPB accounts are being created is ridiculous, and it doesn't look like anyone is trying to put a stop to it.

Yeah idiot bidders don't know how to search for a lower BIN than what they are bidding.

I did one final edit while I still could - dropped both the starting price and the BIN a bit, though they are still high relative to the current ending prices. I see ones ending for less than $1000 now.

I fully expect to get no bids by the time it ends tomorrow. I'm glad I didn't go with the 99 cent listing like I had planned (I bumped up the starting bid so that the BIN would remain in place for a while).

If so I will wait a week or two and relist when the launch glut passes.

Man, I hope this huge drop in price is only because of what time it its right now. Kinda dumb to end your auction this late at night. Please let the bidding sky rocket tomorrow at noon!

Good god, I just sold my 20 gig system, with 2 games and a wireless controll for 1500 dollars. I can't believe this. In fact, desptie the fact that, per my terms and conditions, I am shipping the package out tomorrow morning, I refuse to beleive it until PayPal deposits the money into my bank account, which probobly won't be until Wednesday. I just hope this guy doesn't try and pull a switcheroo and attempt a chargeback through PayPal.

is the transaction covered by the seller protection policy? ie, does he have a confirmed address in the US, UK, or Canada? i'm gonna post mine on ebay tomorrow evening if i haven't gotten a craigslist buyer by then. Should be a lot of buyers looking on Sunday night ready for me to ship Monday morning.

Yeah, he had a confirmed address. He e-mailed me promptly, and everything seems legit so far.
