The Official Lair Thread - Update with Analog Control + DLC on April 15

I think that things Lair will have good gameplay.. there's absolutely no way that Factor 5 would be so much care into the graphics, and not take that same care in their preparation of the gameplay engine... I wouldn't mind if this game used the Zone of Enders control scheme... but that's me talking on the outside looking in.

You must have not played Rouge Squadron III.

I do have high hopes for this game, but Factor 5 is capable of letting a piece of shit out their doors.

Just watched the "Night Battle" HD video... oh man.
Reminded me of Warhawk on PSX, in a good way.

I'll stop gushing now.

I really enjoyed the flight levels in Rouge Squadron III. Everything else wasn't so great.
If Lair is focusing on flight levels only, with no on foot gameplay (and I have no idea if it will, I haven't been following it very closely), it could be very good.

You can land your dragon, chomp/swat/chew on warriors and BBQ them with dragon's breath, then leap back up into the sky.

Those water effects are awesome. Some of the other graphics look a little cheesy--but the sense of scale the game has is amazing. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I heard early on that you can dismount your dragon too. However, they will make the human almost useless, making it seem like you need the dragon.

If you read the preview, being on foot with the human is just a means to get to a dragon.

Here's some article points:

PlayStation Store demo is in the works.
we can expect to see Lair on store shelves this July
"Onfoot" time will be limited. This game is all about flying.
One of the major design elements that the studio wanted to get across as well is that the dragons aren't simply planes but creatures that are capable of waging physical combat and so forth, and to this end it looks like the studio has accomplished its goal.
Though there won't be any sort of multiplayer, you will be able to track how good you are via the game's online leaderboard.
As for other whiz-bang technology goodness, Factor 5 confirms that the game will run at a rock-solid 30fps at both 720p and 1080p. The game indeed ran quite well when we played it, with nary a hitch in framerate to be found. This is rather impressive as levels can be as large as 32x32km in size, which is allowed by Factor 5's use of streaming mesh technology, an offshoot of level of detail models.

Lair also makes use of a fluid dynamics system for its impressive water technology, which looks fantastic even up close. This means that boats and objects are actually buoyant and float as they naturally would. Explosions cause waves in the water, which in turn rocks anything that the waves come across. The fluid dynamics do look to be surface based, meaning that water can't spill over the sides of boats and cause them to sink, but it is rather impressive nonetheless.

Lair is one of the first games that will officially make use of trophies for PlayStation Home. Details behind what you will earn them for are scarce, but they will be included even if Home isn't scheduled to launch until after Lair is released.

This screen was posted on Neo Gaf.

It's interesting because he noted that all the videos and screens we've seen from this game come from that Bridge area. All those dragons, and the hundreds of soldiers fighting on it.

That is just 15% of that level.
Note the Bridge area circled in Red.

Damn, check out the Gametrailers footage.

Rhino bowling action!

And some views of the giant monsters in action. YES!

Hot. This is shaping up to be a potential deal maker for me even though I really haven't got the time for home games. I think I'll stick to my PSP until PS3 hits 5 games I really want to play.
 that little gif is 4MB.
Oh, crap, didn't even realize!
Hehe, that's why we need blu-ray. ;)

that video is ridiculous. so do you guys think he's right when he says no other system can do that scaling technique?

also, did he say each level is 32km wide? They must have 1000 people on their dev team...

I would think it's pretty obvious that if a developer correctly utilizes the cell processor & blu-ray storage, that the PS3 can do things the other systems can't. Whether this really is one of them or not, I have no idea - but it's safe to say that there's a lot of power under the hood of the PS3 that we haven't seen tapped yet. Not even scratched. That's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to this & some of the other upcoming games (Ninja Gaiden: Sigma, Uncharted, R&C Future, etc.).

The first rouge squadron on the N64 was really good... first game to make use of that little ram cart from the 64...

Lame.

Although, that gives me time to recover from games I'm getting in July :p

I'm sort of glad it's getting delayed a week. Only because I want to put some time into Ninja Gaiden Sigma before Lair drops.

QFT, I'll need the time to actually BEAT Ninja Gaiden.

I will not give up like I did with the xbox...I will not give up like I did with the xbox...:bouncy:

One thing I'm noticing is lack of texture resolution. Although that's expected in a game of this scale, it does make me think about the PS3's memory limitations.

I recall how the 360 put in extra RAM at great cost to get Gears of War looking good with all its texture work. And how Oblivion had problems implementing downloadable content due to memory contraints.

It seems like the PS3 really does have a more powerful processor if developers work with it, but I'm wondering how far the system will go with memory constraints.

Gears and Lair both use texture streaming. The limited memory isn't a bottleneck anymore.

I don't see why memory constraints are a problem with DLC for Oblvion, as it's just adding more to in game materials.
They said they could do it, but I'm sure the reason they have not is, frankly, there isn't a market for it yet. It's an old game, and sales weren't high enough to warrant more development.

From sony blog:

Hey everyone, I’m Ryan Hamlyn, I’m the associate producer for Lair. It’s been a long haul—almost 2 years for me, and even longer for some of the team over at our developer, Factor 5—but putting the finishing touches on the game and now seeing all our work culminate into a finished product is very exciting.

I’ve spent every free moment I’ve had lately playing this game, looking for bugs and places to add polish. And yeah, I know I’m biased, but I have to say, the more I play this game the more fun I’m having, which certainly speaks to the depth we’re achieving with the gameplay. Plus we’re getting screenshots like this one of our Spiderwasp boss above, and the game is just looking gorgeous. I love the sense of scale that you get in this shot, and that the Spiderwasp itself has so much detail. In order to get this guy in the game, Factor 5 created a physical model (or maquette), had it scanned to the nth detail and then worked from the scans to get it modeled and textured digitally. A long process to say the least, but the results were worth it and speak for themselves… and wait until you see it move! In fact, you won’t have to wait much longer, as Lair is set to launch on Aug. 14th. In the meantime, you can whet your appetite with some brand new videos and other cool content that’s on our recently updated official Lair site.

Pretty cool new picture (you can click "all sizes" it get a closer view).

Offical game site (which was updated).

I continue to think Lair looks like the most promising PS3 title. It and Ratchet & Clank are almost enough to get me to invest in one. Almost. Assuming they show what the Ico developers are working on at E3, I may just have to bite.

Yeah this game looks great. Watched the video last night and have to say this will probably be the first PS3 game I buy.

Between this and Warhawk, August is going to be a good month for the PS3. There's also Madden 08, of course, and some other 3rd party games. For exclusives, though, my money for August (and part of September!) is already spent on this title.

Add in Metroid Prime 3 for the Wii and it'll be one hell of a busy month.

Perfect release date on Lair for me. I was planning on waiting to rent it but it looks so epic i might want it in my game collection.

oy vey. Good thing I never got around to playing Prime 2 (I will eventually, I swear!), and multiplayer online was stripped. I'm willing to wait for a pricedrop on that title.
