The Official Lair Thread - Update with Analog Control + DLC on April 15

I'll probably only buy Metroid Prime 3 in August(darn limited funds!), but this game does look pretty good.. Can't wait for the demo. :)

I know I'm going to get lynched here, but I don't see that this game looks that fun. From the videos I've seen you pretty much fly through the air and blow shit up, or go on the ground and beat the crap out of guys with your dragon.

NOW, I can only hope that I'm wrong and this game ends up being the shit since Sony REALLY needs to have a decent game come through the pipes. Personally I'm looking forward to Warhawk, but if this gets glowing reviews across the board I'll check it out (I was wrong about God of War and am extatic that I was).

It's easy to oversimplify games like that Crimson.
I mean, in Tekken, I just tap buttons and hope the computer doesn't block.

In Ninja Gaiden, I just fight some bad guys, walk around, and then fight even more bad guys.

Yup, hence my mention of God of War.

It's just that with some games you watch the trailer and you feel like you HAVE to play it (LittleBigPlanet for me is an example), other ones you watch a trailer and it just looks like "meh" but when you actually play it you are blown away --- I'm hoping Lair is this.

Ho ho ho, I can't wait until Apossum reads this!

Crimson, you're welcome to think what you want about the game. I don't mind people sharing their opinions, and if this doesn't look like a must-purchase for you, then that's your system. I would persuade you to at least rent Warhawk if you weren't looking forward to it; having played it, I'm really excited about its release. It's not a particularly deep game, but it doesn't need to be.

Home, OTOH, will be an absolute bust, IMO. Once people can invite friends into games from the main menu XMB, and then access the XMB in-game, Home will die like a shopping mall with nothing left but a Radio Shack and an Orange Julius.

He said he was looking forward to Warhawk, but not Lair. ;)

BIKE RACKS! 3 o'CLOCK!

E3 impressions.

Ah Lair. You and I, we have quite the tempestuous relationship. When we first met your looks blew me away, but the more I got to know you the less I seemed to like you. You were confusing, needy, shallow, everything I hate in a relationship, but I couldn't stay away. Now I'm happy I didn't.

I think that perhaps people read too much into my last impression of Lair, taken from my hands-on time with the game at Sony's Gamers Day. I didn't say I hated it, I've never hated the game, what I said was that I'm still on the line with the game and that the game's confusing objectives made me fear that I would end up not liking it.

People turned that into "Brian hates Lair". I've always thought Lair is a beautiful game, but of course, beauty can be only skin deep. In the case of Lair, the hands-on time I'd been given with the game made it feel that way.

I had a little downtime before meeting with Miyamoto and decided to hop on over to Sony's "arcade" a room set up in a bottom floor of a hotel, packed with playable copies of most of their PS3 and PSP offerings. After wandering around for a second or two Sarah Stocker, Lair's producer, walked over to me. Stocker and I had discussed Lair at length during Sony's Gamers Day last year. We chatted for a minute about what I did and didn't like about the game and then she lead me over to the most current build to show it off.

She said the development team had done a number of things to try and tweak the visual cues, making it easier to understand what you were supposed to do in a given mission. One of the things they did was increase the bloom around your target, giving the item or creature a bit more of a glow to it so it is easier to recognize. They also increased the volume for the vocal cues a bit and have them repeat if you seem to be aimlessly flying around.

The only other major tweak I noticed was that when you take to the ground you no longer use the SIXAXIS motion to move around, instead you use the sticks, which feels a lot better. Motion control on the ground just doesn't feel right to me.

I ended up playing through the entire demo this time around, starting with the training session and wrapping up with the mini boss battle. The game retains its beauty, and does feel a bit more understandable if you progress through it slowly. I think there will still be gamers who get frustrated playing the game, but it doesn't kill the experience.

The bottom line is that this is one of those games that's got a fairly steep learning curve and not a ton of time to learn what you have to do, but it's also meant to be played and replayed (so you can unlock a bunch of bonus content like behind the scenes and art assets), so I'm sure most gamers will put up with it until they figure it out.

Releasing in August, it's one of the few exclusive PS3 games coming out this year. I have to say the game looks pretty amazing and the sense of scale that it generates should be something worth remembering for years to come. Is this game on anyone elses Most Wanted list?
cant wait till it comes out but hope it wont disapoint me
Same with me and thats ow I feel about warhawk too
AA title at best, i think people are overhyping it.
I dont know, it just looks fantastic in every way. The levels are HUGE, the enemies are AWESOME, and the gameplay looks like its going to work pretty well. Not to mention how amazing the graphics are.

I'm actually happy that Factor 5 Dropped the shitty starwars franchise since I hate that crap.

1st review of the final retail product has been spotted!!! LAIR scores a 9.0 out of 10.0 by PLAY MAGAZINE. Very impressive...

“With its stunning visuals and incredible soundtrack, Lair may well be the single most powerful experience that a man can share with his $5,000 home theatre system.”

"If gliding over a beautiful starlit ocean to the haunting strains of opera doesn’t impress you, you’re dead inside."

Other notable comments were that all frame rate issues have been fixed, expect high replay value thru unlockables, and a game with depth by combining 6 genres in one. The negative comments relate to occasional vague mission objectives and confusing navigation. Enjoy!

Lair Dev is Complete, Aug 14 Release Set!

Given all the content and interest here on Lair, I figured you guys would also be interested to hear that the North American version of Lair has completed its development and is now in manufacturing! That means that we are on track for our August 14 release date. It goes without saying that we’re eager to get this out to those of you that have been waiting so patiently (or not!) for it to arrive. Considering the new PS3 price and now Lair, hopefully there’s even more of a reason to scoop up a PS3 if you haven’t already!

For us, there’s still a bit of work to do, as we have localization to finish up for Europe, Japan, Korea, and more, which will all hopefully follow very soon. Once those are out, our leaderboards will truly be global, and then we can see once and for all who the best Lair players are out there! The gauntlet has been thrown, and North American players are getting Lair first, so don’t give that advantage away…

We also have some great updates for the official Lair site that will be live soon, so keep an eye out for those …

Missed this post the other day; glad to see a high review of it. Although undeniably gorgeous, there was some lingering doubt as to how well the game would play. I hope more positive reviews appear prior to release so I can feel better about purchasing it (though multiple lousy reviews will make me not buy it, unless a demo appears and blows me away).

i might get this, if madden 08 reviews suck and i have to cry over it, or this game gets excellent reviews, for some reason a dragon sim doesnt exactly seem that exciting i dont know why :/
5.5 average from EGM and 3.75 from Gamepro.
lol not too good then, but just a review from magazines, we will wait from normal gamers. lol i like your avatar pic, im gettin madden 08 lol
5.5 average from EGM and 3.75 from Gamepro.
Wouldn't that be 3.75/5 for Gamepro?

And the EGM score isn't confirmed yet...although even if those are the real scores I'll still be getting the game.
Wouldn't that be 3.75/5 for Gamepro?
Yep, figured people already knew the scale.
And the IGN score isn't confirmed yet...although even if those are the real scores I'll still be getting the game.

You put credence into IGN scores? Lawlz.

Heh...I mean EGM...oops. :p

And 3.75/5 isn't bad...although it is Gamepro so the score is probably either too low or too high

The one review site/magazine I have any trust in these days is Gamespot (despite the 8.8 for Twilight Princess compared to Tony Hawk 3's 10 >_>). If they pan it as well, I'll still rent the game to see it in motion on my PS3.

I dislike gamespot for many reasons. They they give lower scores a lot of the time for ridiculous reasons or to fight the power. Not to mention they use terms like "no-nonsense" A LOT while, not really anything against them is still annoying.

Actually, most video-game reviews make no sense, statistically. I mean, according to the definition of "average," and the dynamic nature of the term, many more games should be getting "average" scores. Almost all videogame reviews have a massive, massive, massive positive bias. They use an absolute scale, rather than a relative one, which I think is odd sometimes.

I'm watching the E3 trailer for this and I'm just getting more excited for it...I wish someone had the actual review for EGM to see what they hated about it exactly.

Yeah same here. I would like to see what they say even though to me there reviews are never really detailed. I love how Play gives these high scores and then a lot of other publications rip on a game. I usually like Play's reviews and read the Lair one. Seemed like they enjoyed the game more for it's graphics then game play.
